| ○ | ○ | Article | Exploring the role of cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance in predicting smartphone use among medical university students | We investigated the role of cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance in the relationship between stress and smartphone use. A total of 725 medical students completed self-reported questionnaires that consisted of the Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire, and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II. The total and all subscale scores for smartphone use were positively correlated with stress, cognitive fusion, and experiential avoidance. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that adding the two variables, namely, cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance, accounted for an additional 10% of the variance in smartphone use. However, only cognitive fusion was a significant predictor. Moreover, cognitive fusion and experiential avoidance individually played a mediating role in the relationship between stress and smartphone use. | ○ | ○ | Article | Numerical and experimental studies on design of multi-lumen tube extruded with drawing and air flow | This study represents the design and optimization procedure of a multi-lumen tube used for endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) catheter. The geometry of tip and die for the multi-lumen tube is designed based on numerical analysis of molten polymer and air flow. In particular, this numerical study consider the interaction between the molten polymer and the air flow in the lumen which is the main process variable of extrusion, and analyze the heat transfer and pressure distribution through the air flow for the first time. In addition, to reflect the reality of the multi-lumen extrusion process, the velocity is controlled at the end of the tube ejected to the free surface in consideration of the extrusion process, which is drawn by the puller downstream of the extruder. The shear rate and temperature dependent viscosity of PEBAX 7233 SA01 MED is measured for non-isothermal numerical simulations. The extrusion process for multi-lumen tubes with drawing is simulated using ANSYS Polyflow. The profile of extrudate is numerically predicted with the initial design of the tip and die with the manufacturing parameter is optimized. The predicted profile of extrudate is compared to the target profile with dimensional requirements. The design of the tip and die is modified based on numerical results following the design procedure. To suppress the die swell phenomena, the flow area of molten polymer is increased, and the velocity difference is reduced. Finally, the multi-lumen tube with the optimized tip and die is experimentally extruded and compared to the target profile of the extrudate. It has a good agreement with the target profile and satisfies the dimensional requirements. | ○ | ○ | Article | Superior sagittal sinus flow as a proxy for tracking global cerebral blood flow dynamics during wakefulness and sleep | Sleep, a state of reduced consciousness, affects brain oxygen metabolism and lowers cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2). Previously, we quantified CMRO2 during sleep via Fick's Principle, with a single-band MRI sequence measuring both hemoglobin O-2 saturation (SvO(2)) and superior sagittal sinus (SSS) blood flow, which was upscaled to obtain total cerebral blood flow (tCBF). The procedure involves a brief initial calibration scan to determine the upscaling factor (f(c)), assumed state-invariant. Here, we used a dual-band sequence to simultaneously provide SvO(2) in SSS and tCBF in the neck every 16 seconds, allowing quantification of f(c) dynamically. Ten healthy subjects were scanned by MRI with simultaneous EEG for 80 minutes, yielding 300 temporal image frames per subject. Four volunteers achieved slow-wave sleep (SWS), as evidenced by increased delta-wave activity (per American Academy of Sleep Medicine criteria). SWS was maintained for 13.5 +/- 7.0 minutes, with CMRO2 28.6 +/- 5.5% lower than pre-sleep wakefulness. | ○ | ○ | Article | Tailoring chemoselectivity of Fe/Ni catalyst for hydrogenation of carbonyl compound | Selective hydrogenation of carbonyl moiety in the presence of olefinic group and other reducible functionality is an industrially important transformation. However, the protocol of green chemistry cannot be sacrificed for its formidable challenging transformation. Therefore, iron nickel bimetallic recyclable catalyst (Fe/Ni) was used for base free hydrogenation of carbonyl compound with high activity and chemoselectivity in microwave environment. The microwave irradiation and pre-treatment of bimetallic catalyst (Fe/Ni) divert conversion/selectivity towards C--O group as compared to C--C or another reducible moiety. This is further confirmed by DFT calculations which shows that the C--O site is strongly interacted with the surface compared to the C--C site. The pyridine adsorption studies revealed that pre-treated (Fe/Ni) possess more acidic sites as compared to untreated catalyst. | ○ | Article | V2O5-WO3 catalysts treated with titanium isopropoxide using a one-step co-precipitation method for selective catalytic reduction with NH3 | Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) is the most effective way to reduce NOx emissions. However, the most used catalysts for this purpose, V2O5-WO3/TiO2 (VWTi) hybrid system, have limited applicability owing to its narrow operating temperature range (300–400 °C). Therefore, catalysts with abundant active sites are needed to extend the temperature range to more acceptable values (200–400 °C). The number of active sites depends on the catalyst synthesis method. The aim of this study is to increase the dispersion of V-OH and W-OH through a one-step process, this is achieved by treating the TiO2 support with titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) and simultaneously incorporating the V-OH and W-OH. This synthesis method used here is expected to enhance the interaction between the support and V-OH and W-OH by increasing the number of catalytically active sites. This process is simple and could be applied for the catalyst manufacturing process in the industrial scale. The optimal performance observed for the catalysts prepared at a TTIP loading of 5 wt% using a one-step method is due to its higher catalytic activity at lower temperatures, the observed results could be explained based on the formation of abundant V-OH and W-OH functional groups and the V4+/V5+ ratio (≈1). | ○ | ○ | Article | A Low Latency Approximate Adder Design Based on Dual Sub-Adders With Error Recovery | This paper presents a novel dual sub-adder based approximate adder that splits a precise adder into two to significantly reduce the latency. The proposed error recovery and reduction technique effectively compensates for the catastrophic accuracy degradation incurred by the split. Implemented in a 65-nm CMOS technology, our design reduces the delay and energy consumption by up to 68% and 78%, respectively, compared to a traditional adder, and outperforms other existing approximate adders in hardware and accuracy joint metrics. The proposed design's efficacy is shown through digital image processing applications where our design makes processed output images closest to the one using the accurate adder over other approximate adders. | ○ | Article | Amidoxime-Containing Zr and Hf Atomic Layer Deposition Precursors for Metal Oxide Thin Films | In this article, we discuss the synthesis of eight novel zirconium and hafnium complexes containing amidoxime ligands as potential precursors for atomic layer deposition (ALD). Two amidoximes, viz., (E)-N '-hydroxy-N,N-dimethylacetimidamide (mdaoH) and (Z)-N '-hydroxy-N,N-dimethylpivalimidamide (tdaoH), along with their Zr and Hf homoleptic complexes, Zr(mdao)(4) (1), Hf(mdao)(4) (2), Zr(tdao)(4) (3), and Hf(tdao)(4) (4) were prepared. We further synthesized heteroleptic compounds with different physical properties by introducing cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligand, namely, CpZr(mdao)(3) (5), CpHf(mdao)(3) (6), CpZr(tdao)(3) (7), and CpHf(tdao)(3) (8). Thermogravimetric analysis was used for the assessment of the evaporation characteristics of complexes 1, 2, 5, and 6, and it revealed multistep weight losses with high residues. On the other hand, the thermogravimetric analysis curves of complexes 3, 4, 7, and 8 comprising tdao ligands revealed single-step weight losses with moderate residues. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies of complexes 1, 3, and 7 showed that all of the complexes have monomeric molecular structures. Complex 7 exhibited a low melting point (75 degrees C), good volatility, and high thermal stability compared with other complexes. | ○ | ○ | Article | International standardization and optimization group for intersphincteric resection (ISOG-ISR): modified Delphi consensus on anatomy, definition, indication, surgical technique, specimen description and functional outcome | AimIntersphincteric resection (ISR) is an oncologically complex operation for very low-lying rectal cancers. Yet, definition, anatomical description, operative indications and operative approaches to ISR are not standardized. The aim of this study was to standardize the definition of ISR by reaching international consensus from the experts in the field. This standardization will allow meaningful comparison in the literature in the future.MethodA modified Delphi approach with three rounds of questionnaire was adopted. A total of 29 international experts from 11 countries were recruited for this study. Six domains with a total of 37 statements were examined, including anatomical definition; definition of intersphincteric dissection, intersphincteric resection (ISR) and ultra-low anterior resection (uLAR); indication for ISR; surgical technique of ISR; specimen description of ISR; and functional outcome assessment protocol.ResultsThree rounds of questionnaire were performed (response rate 100%, 89.6%, 89.6%). Agreement (& GE;80%) reached standardization on 36 statements.ConclusionThis study provides an international expert consensus-based definition and standardization of ISR. This is the first study standardizing terminology and definition of deep pelvis/anal canal anatomy from a surgical point of view. Intersphincteric dissection, ISR and uLAR were specifically defined for precise surgical description. Indication for ISR was determined by the rectal tumour's maximal radial infiltration (T stage) below the levator ani. A new surgical definition of T3isp was reached by consensus to define T3 low rectal tumours infiltrating the intersphincteric plane. A practical flowchart for surgical indication for uLAR/ISR/abdominoperineal resection was developed. | ○ | ○ | Article | Spin-isolated ultraviolet-visible dynamic meta-holographic displays with liquid crystal modulators | Wearable displays or head-mounted displays (HMDs) have the ability to create a virtual image in the field of view of one or both eyes. Such displays constitute the main platform for numerous virtual reality (VR)- and augmented reality (AR)-based applications. Meta-holographic displays integrated with AR technology have potential applications in the advertising, media, and healthcare sectors. In the previous decade, dielectric metasurfaces emerged as a suitable choice for designing compact devices for highly efficient displays. However, the small conversion efficiency, narrow bandwidth, and costly fabrication procedures limit the device's functionalities. Here, we proposed a spin-isolated dielectric multi-functional metasurface operating at broadband optical wavelengths with high transmission efficiency in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) regimes. The proposed metasurface comprised silicon nitride (Si3N4)-based meta-atoms with high bandgap, i.e., similar to 5.9 eV, and encoded two holographic phase profiles. Previously, the multiple pieces of holographic information incorporated in the metasurfaces using interleaved and layer stacking techniques resulted in noisy and low-efficiency outputs. A single planar metasurface integrated with a liquid crystal was demonstrated numerically and experimentally in the current work to validate the spin-isolated dynamic UV-Vis holographic information at broadband wavelengths. | ○ | ○ | Article | An Output-Capacitor-Free NMOS Digital LDO Using Gate Driving Strength Modulation and Droop Detector | An output-capacitor-free NMOS digital LDO (DLDO) using gate driving strength modulation (GDSM) is described. The proposed DLDO is mainly based on the timedriven topology while the GDSM changes the gate driving level adaptively according to the load current condition. The proposed GDSM lowers the gate driving level in the light load condition which improves the load transient response, widens the load current dynamic range, and reduces the output voltage ripple. A droop detector combined with the modulation scheme is also proposed to further improve the undershoot and recovery time. The proposed DLDO has been implemented in 28 nm CMOS and the 20,000x load range is obtained even with 256 unity power switch arrays. | ○ | ○ | Review | Analyzing the glial proteome in Alzheimer's disease | IntroductionAlzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive decline, memory loss, and changes in behavior. Accumulating evidence indicates that dysfunction of glial cells, including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes, may contribute to the development and progression of AD. Large-scale analysis of glial proteins sheds light on their roles in cellular processes and diseases. In AD, glial proteomics has been utilized to understand glia-based pathophysiology and identify potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets.Area coveredIn this review, we provide an updated overview of proteomic analysis of glia in the context of AD. Additionally, we discuss current challenges in the field, involving glial complexity and heterogeneity, and describe some cutting-edge proteomic technologies to address them.Expert opinionUnbiased comprehensive analysis of glial proteomes aids our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of AD pathogenesis. These investigations highlight the crucial role of glial cells and provide novel insights into the mechanisms of AD pathology. A deeper understanding of the AD-related glial proteome could offer a repertoire of potential biomarkers and therapeutics. | ○ | ○ | Article | Comparative Analysis of Gene Expression between Early Maturation Mutant 'Beni Shogun' and 'Fuji' Cultivars during Fruit Development and Ripening | We aimed to compare the maturation and ripening characteristics of two apple cultivars, early maturation mutant 'Beni Shogun' and 'Fuji'. The study revealed that both cultivars reached full bloom on the same day, but 'Beni Shogun' matured earlier than 'Fuji'. In addition, differences were observed in fruit size, length, width, sweetness, acidity, and ethylene production levels. The study also examined the expression patterns of genes involved in ethylene biosynthesis and signal transduction, as well as those involved in auxin signal transduction and transcriptional regulation, to investigate the putative molecular mechanism behind the distinct fruit development, maturation, and ripening. The expression of the MdACO1 gene showed a sharp increase after the maturation date, whereas the expression of the MdACO7 gene was higher in the early and middle stages of fruit development. The clustering analysis provided insights into the correlation between the phenotypic traits and expression levels of the key genes. They were categorized into three clusters, and the third cluster consisted of six phenotypes, including fruit size, length, width, sweetness, starch content, and ethylene production, as well as the one gene MdACO1.
