Article Quantification of river total phosphorus using integrative artificial intelligence models Total phosphorus (T-P) refers to the concentration of phosphorus in water and is one of the important parameters for eutrophication in lakes and rivers. In current research, neuroscience dependent (i.e., singular and doubleplatform synthetic) approaches were employed to predict the river T-P concentration. Singular techniques were developed utilizing machine learning based (support vector machines (SVMs), stochastic gradient boosting (SGB)), and deep learning based multilayer perceptron (DMLP) models. Besides, double-platform synthetic techniques were developed by integrating a prior data-processing (Discrete-wavelet) algorithm with the singular techniques. Six input scenarios conditional on different water quantity and quality parameters acquired from two stations (Hwangji and Toilchun), South Korea, were employed for appraising singular and double-platform synthetic techniques. The various promoted models were evaluated using four statistical standards viz., mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), scatter index (SI), and Pearson correlation coefficient (CCp), and four visual references viz., scatter diagram, box-and-whisker plot, violin plot, and Taylor diagram. It can be indicated from the outcomes that the double-platform synthetic techniques did not always lead to more accurate predictions than the singular techniques. Further, results also supplied that the SGB with the 6th input (MAE = 0.012 mg/L, RMSE = 0.014 mg/L, and CCp = 0.650 for Hwangji; MAE = 0.011 mg/L, RMSE = 0.017 mg/L, and CCp = 0.963 for Toilchun) scenario model demonstrated the best accuracy for predicting river T-P concentration by the singular techniques for both stations, whereas the discrete-wavelet SVMs with the 4th input (MAE = 0.007 mg/L, RMSE = 0.011 mg/L, and CCp = 0.765 for Hwangji) and discrete-wavelet SGB with the 5th input (MAE = 0.012 mg/L, RMSE = 0.017 mg/L, and CCp = 0.953 for Toilchun) scenario models provided the best predictive accuracy among double-platform synthetic techniques, respectively. Article Effect of chronic viral hepatitis and metabolic factors on renal cancer risk in a large cohort in Republic of Korea Purpose: We investigated the association between hepatic and metabolic factors and renal cancer risk. Methods: This population-based cohort study included cancer-free individuals who underwent general health evaluation (January to December 2010) at the Korean National Health Insurance Service and followed-up through 2017. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), determined by adjusted Cox regression analysis were used to investigate the effect of variables on renal cancer risk. Results: Among 4,518,704 subjects, 6531 patients developed renal cancer. Adjusted analyses of epidemiological factors and BMI (body mass index) (Model I) showed serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) >= 60 mg/dL (adjusted HR [aHR] 0.88, 95% CI, 0.81-0.95) reduced renal cancer risk comparing to low HDL-C, whereas hepatitis B virus (HBV) antigen (aHR 1.41, 95% CI 1.19-1.68) and chronic HBV infection (aHR 1.65, 95% CI 1.26-2.17) increased its risk. Higher BMI increased renal cancer risk in dose-dependent manner (P for trend = 60 mg/dL in men) HDL-C reduced renal cancer risk. Alcohol consumption increased kidney cancer risk in age >= 60 years, but it had no association with renal cancer in age < 60 years. Conclusions: High serum HDL-C levels reduced and HBV antigen and chronic HBV infection increased renal cancer risk across different adjusted analysis models. This effect of low HDL-C and chronic HBV infection per-sisted in sex-based subanalysis. Article Global Diversification, Real Earnings Management, and Future Performance: Evidence from Korea Research has generally focused on demonstrating real earnings management (REM) stemming from managerial opportunism using the agency framework. Examining a sample of firms on the Korea Composite Stock Price Index from 2011 to 2019, we explore the benefits of REM. Empirical results show a positive relationship between corporate globalization and the extent of REM, and corporate globalization mitigates the negative relationship between REM and future (operating and market) performance, observed only in firms with a low incentive to engage in REM for zero earnings. Global firms with more operational flexibility may strategically utilize REM to avoid temporary crises and perform better in the future. Article Removal of Cu and Sb from waste acid process of copper smelters for minimizing waste generation The demand for waste minimization in copper smelters has been attracting widespread interest, particularly in the recent global trend towards ESG (environmental, social governance) standards. The typical waste acid process of primary copper smelters is composed of hydrometallurgical technologies such as valuable Cu recovery by single-stage sulfide precipitation followed by a couple of neutralization steps to remove impurities (including H2SO4 and Sb). In this study, a two-stage sulfide precipitation technique capable of removing > 99% of Sb as Sb2S3 and Sb2O3 was introduced prior to the neutralization with the goal of minimizing the generation of large volume of Sb(OH)3 with CaSO4 as waste. Moreover, SO2 in waste acid was identified as the primary cause for the low efficiency of Sb removal by single-stage sulfide precipitation. In addition, an alternative neutralization method facilitated with a slurry mixing technique under optimum pH <= 2.5 was introduced in order to valorize the waste neutralization cake as salable gypsum. The phenomena of changing gypsum particle morphology with pH were elucidated by establishing a gypsum particle settling mechanism, which is associated with drag force and inter-particular force. The technical feasibility of the proposed methods was preliminarily assessed on a laboratory scale and verified on a pilot scale. Article Short-term outcomes of Early versus conventional adjuvant chemotherapy in stage III colon cancer: randomized clinical trial Background: Evidence is lacking regarding the earliest timing of initiating adjuvant chemotherapy to maximize its efficacy safely. A trial was designed and conducted to evaluate the safety and oncological efficacy of early adjuvant chemotherapy compared with conventional adjuvant chemotherapy. The short-term outcomes are reported here. Methods: A multicentre, randomized (1 : 1), open-label, phase III trial was conducted comparing early adjuvant chemotherapy with conventional adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with stage III colon cancer. Patients who underwent radical surgery who had stage III colon cancer confirmed by histopathological assessment were screened and randomized into the early adjuvant chemotherapy arm or the conventional adjuvant chemotherapy arm. The primary endpoint was 3-year disease-free survival. The adjuvant chemotherapy with FOLFOX was delivered between postoperative day 10 and 14 in the early adjuvant chemotherapy arm, and between postoperative day 24 and 28 in the conventional adjuvant chemotherapy arm. Toxicity and quality of life were evaluated. Results: Between 9 September 2011 and 6 March 2020, 443 patients consented to randomization at eight sites. The intention-to-treat population included 423 patients (209 in the early adjuvant chemotherapy arm and 214 in the conventional adjuvant chemotherapy arm), and the safety population included 380 patients (192 in the early adjuvant chemotherapy arm and 188 in the conventional adjuvant chemotherapy arm). There was no statistically significant difference in overall toxicity (28.1 per cent in the early adjuvant chemotherapy arm and 28.2 per cent in the conventional adjuvant chemotherapy arm, P = 0.244), surgical complications, and quality of life between the two arms. Conclusion: Adjuvant chemotherapy can be safely initiated 2 weeks after surgery with toxicity and quality of life comparable to conventional adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer. Article Ten-Year Oncologic Outcomes in T1-3N1 Breast Cancer After Targeted Axillary Sampling: A Retrospective Study BackgroundTargeted axillary sampling (TAS) is a new surgical concept for the assessment of axillary lymph node status in breast cancer that is hypothesized to be more effective at minimizing postoperative morbidities than axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), provided the metastatic axillary lymph node can be accurately detected without missing data; however, the oncologic outcomes over long-term follow-up have not been sufficiently investigated. This was a retrospective analysis to evaluate the 10-year oncologic outcomes in T1-3N1 breast cancer after TAS.MethodsBetween 2008 and 2013, 230 female patients with cT1-3N1 breast cancer underwent breast and axillary surgery (ALND, n = 171; TAS, n = 59) at our institute. After TAS was applied, additional axillary radiotherapy was performed. Various postoperative complications, including postoperative seroma, lymphedema, and 10-year oncological outcomes, were evaluated and compared between the ALND and TAS groups.ResultsAlthough overall survival during the 10-year follow-up period was better in the TAS group, there was no statistically significant difference in oncologic outcomes, including locoregional recurrence, distant metastasis, and overall survival (p = 0.395, 0.818, and 0.555, respectively). Furthermore, the incidence of lymphedema on the ipsilateral arm was significantly higher in the ALND group (p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe 10-year oncological outcomes of TAS were not inferior to those of conventional ALND in T1-3N1 breast cancers; however, the incidence of lymphedema was significantly higher in the ALND group. Article The effect of charity website design on perceived consistency and its consequences PurposeDrawing upon the consistency literature, the theory of visual rhetoric and social judgment of warmth and competence, this study examines the determinants and impacts of perceived interface design consistency in the context of charity websites.Design/methodology/approachTo identify design factors of perceived interface design consistency, this study separates charity website interface design into two aspects: main appeal design (i.e. appeal quality) and peripheral design (i.e. image type). The authors designed a two (appeal quality: low vs high) x three (image type: control vs adults vs children) controlled lab experiment to investigate the effects of various interface choices. A total of 217 subjects participated in the experiment. The authors used structural equation model (SEM) analysis and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to test the research hypotheses.FindingsThis study found that appeal quality and human images increase perceived interface design consistency. The authors also found that the relationship between appeal quality and perceived interface design consistency is moderated by image type. Finally, the authors showed that perceived interface design consistency increases perceived warmth and competence of charity websites, which in turn affect intention to use the website for donations.Originality/valueThe authors' findings provide novel insights for theory on consistency and interface design and practical implications for charity website designers by identifying determinants and consequences of perceived interface design consistency. Article Why do consumers continue to use OTT services? As consumers' interest in over-the-top (OTT) platforms has been increasing, we thoroughly examined the factors affecting the continuous usage intention of OTT services using the dual post-adoption model. In this study, we analyzed the structural relationships between user satisfaction, resistance to switching, and continuous usage intention, with dedication- (personalization and content diversity) and constraint-based (investment cost and learning effort) factors as the main variables using PWSW (SPSS) 23.0 and AMOS 22.0. The results showed that dedication-based factors had positive effects on user satisfaction and constraint-based factors had positive effects on resistance to switching. Due to the use of phantom variables and bootstrap methods to verify the significance of individual mediation effects, dedication-based factors affected continuous usage intention through user satisfaction, whereas constraint-based factors had a greater effect on continuous usage intention when mediated by resistance to switching. Lastly, user satisfaction and resistance to switching had positive effects on continuous usage intention. This study is important because it is the first to apply the benefits and costs perceived using OTT services to a dual post-adoption model and specifically identifies the key factors affecting intention to continue using the OTT service. Our findings can provide practical guidelines to establish effective platform management strategies for companies providing OTT services by analyzing the specific reasons why consumers continue to use existing services in the current mature OTT market from two perspectives. Article Chronic inflammation in high-fat diet-fed mice: Unveiling the early pathogenic connection between liver and adipose tissue Obesity-induced chronic inflammation has been linked to several autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. The underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood, but it is believed that chronic inflammation in adipose tissue can lead to the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, which can trigger immune responses and contribute to the development of autoimmune diseases. However, the underlying mechanisms that lead to the infiltration of immune cells into adipose tissue are not fully understood. In this study, we observed a time-dependent response to a high-fat diet in the liver and epididymal white adipose tissue using gene set enrichment analysis. Our findings revealed a correlation between early abnormal innate immune responses in the liver and late inflammatory response in the adipose tissue, that eventually leads to systemic inflammation. Specifically, our data suggest that the dysregulated NADH homeostasis in the mitochondrial matrix, interacting with the mitochondrial translation process, could serve as a sign marking the transition from liver inflammation to adipose tissue inflammation. Taken together, our study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of chronic inflammation and associated autoimmune diseases in obesity. Article Dual anti-angiogenic and anti-metastatic activity of myriocin synergistically enhances the anti-tumor activity of cisplatin Purpose Tumor microenvironment consists of various kind of cells, forming complex interactions and signal transductions for tumor growth. Due to this complexity, targeting multiple kinases could yield improved clinical outcomes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the potential of myriocin, from Mycelia sterilia, as a novel dual-kinase inhibitor and suggest myriocin as a candidate for combined chemotherapy. Methods We initially evaluated the anti-tumor and anti-metastatic effect of myriocin in mouse allograft tumor models. We examined the effects of myriocin on angiogenesis and tumor vasculature using in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo models, and also tested the anti-migration effect of myriocin in in vitro models. Next, we explored the effects of myriocin alone and in combination with cisplatin on tumor growth and vascular normalization in mouse models. Results We found that myriocin inhibited tumor growth and lung metastasis in mouse allograft tumor models. Myriocin induced normalization of the tumor vasculature in the mouse models. We also found that myriocin suppressed angiogenesis through the VEGFR2/PI3K/AKT pathway in endothelial cells (ECs), as well as cancer cell migration by blocking the I kappa B alpha/NF-kappa B(p65)/MMP-9 pathway. Finally, we found that myriocin enhanced the drug delivery efficacy of cisplatin by increasing the integrity of tumor vasculature in the mouse models, which synergistically increased the anti-tumor activity of cisplatin. Conclusion We suggest that myriocin is a novel potent anti-cancer agent that dually targets both VEGFR2 in ECs and I kappa B alpha in cancer cells, and exerts more pronounced anti-tumor effects than with either kinase being inhibited alone. Article Efficient and Secure Encapsulation of a Natural Phase Change Material in Nanofibers Using Coaxial Electrospinning for Sustainable Thermal Energy Storage Coaxial electrospinning was used to efficiently and securelyencapsulate a natural phase change material in polymer core-sheathnanofibers for sustainable thermal energy storage. In this study, wepresent an ecofriendly technique forencapsulatinglauric acid (LA), a natural phase change material, within polystyrene(PS) nanofibers through coaxial electrospinning. The resulting LAPScore-sheath nanofibers exhibited a melting enthalpy of up to136.6 J/g, representing 75.8% of the heat storage capacity of pristineLA (180.2 J/g), a value surpassing all previously reported core-sheathfibers. Scanning electron microscopy revealed uniform LAPS nanofibersfree of surface LA until the core LA feed rate reached 1.3 mL/h. Asthe core LA feed rate increased, the fiber diameter shrank from 2.24 & PLUSMN; 0.31 to 0.58 & PLUSMN; 0.45 & mu;m. Infrared spectra demonstrateda proportional increase in the LA content with rising core LA injectionrates. Thermogravimetric analysis found the maximum core LA contentin core-sheath nanofibers to be 75.0%. Differential scanningcalorimetry thermograms displayed a trend line shift upon LA leakagefor LA(1.3)PS nanofibers. LAPS fibers containing 75.0% LAeffectively maintained consistent cycling stability and reusabilityacross 100 heating-cooling cycles (20-60 & DEG;C) withoutheat storage deterioration. The core LA remained securely within thePS sheath after 100 cycles, and the LAPS nanofibers retained an excellentstructural integrity without rupture. The energy-dense and form-stableLAPS core-sheath nanofibers have great potential for variousthermal energy storage applications, such as building insulation, smart textiles, and electronic cooling systems, providing efficienttemperature regulation and energy conservation. Article Methylbenzyl Naphthalene: Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier for Facile Hydrogen Storage and Release A newhomocyclic methylbenzyl naphthalene (MBN) compoundhas beendeveloped as a novel liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) mediumwith a high gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity of 6.44 wt % andgood dehydrogenation ability. According to the results of theoreticalcalculations of designed MBN, MBN media possesses one of the lowestdehydrogenation enthalpies (623 K) at ambienttemperature. The H-2 storage efficiency of MBN was optimized to achievea yield of greater than 99% using a new Ru-based catalyst. The reactionmonitoring study suggests the stepwise hydrogenation reaction of aromaticrings, which allows the proposed hydrogenation mechanism. The extractionof H-2 from hydrogen-rich H16-MBN wasconducted via a dehydrogenation reaction (yield > 99%) using aPt/CeO2 catalyst, which enabled fast H-2 release. The fasterand facile dehydrogenation of MBN compared to the other reported homocyclicLOHC media coincides with the theoretical calculation results. A novel homocyclic liquid organic hydrogencarrier basedon methylbenzyl naphthalene isomers is employed as a rechargeablehydrogen storage system. Article Physical Properties of Poly(ether-thiourea)-Based Elastomer Formed by Zigzag Hydrogen Bonding and Slidable Cross-Linking In this study, the effects of zigzag hydrogen bonding and slidable cross-linking on the design of stretchable elastomers were explored. Poly-(ether-thiourea) (TU), capable of generating strong zigzag hydrogen bonds without crystallization, was introduced as the main chain in the non-cross-linked region of the developed elastomer. Consequently, the toughness of the TU-based elastomer was 14 times higher than that of elastomers formed using linear poly-(ethylene glycol), despite the relatively low molecular weight of TU (similar to 3k). When a slidable polyrotaxane cross-linker was introduced into the TU-based elastomer, its flexibility became twice as high as that of the rigid polymer cross-linker. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the elastomer were prevented from deterioration against repeated deformation under the limited strain condition of 150%. Article Plasma Antiretinal Autoantibody Profiling and Diagnostic Efficacy in Patients With Autoimmune Retinopathy center dot PURPOSE: To evaluate plasma antiretinal autoantibody (ARA) profiling and diagnostic efficacy for autoimmune retinopathy (AIR).center dot DESIGN: A multicenter, diagnostic evaluation study.center dot METHODS: Forty-nine patients with a clinical diagno-sis of AIR, disease controls including 20 patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP), and 30 normal controls were included. Plasma samples from patients were analyzed for the presence of 6 ARAs, including recoverin, a-enolase, carbonic anhydrase II, heat shock protein 60, aldolase C, and cone-rod homeobox/cone-rod retinal dystrophy 2 us-ing western blotting.center dot RESULTS: Autoantibody detection rates against cone -rod homeobox/cone-rod retinal dystrophy 2, heat shock protein 60, and aldolase C in AIR were 67.3%, 40.8%, and 42.9%, respectively, which were higher than those in RP and normal controls ( P < .001, P < .001, and P = .007, respectively), but recoverin, a-enolase, and carbonic anhydrase II were not different from other con-trol groups ( P = .117, P = .774, and P = .467, re-spectively). Among ARAs, antirecoverin antibody was the most specific, as it was found in 3 (6.1%) patients with AIR and none of the control groups. As the number of detected ARAs increased, the probability of AIR in -creased (odds ratio: 1.913; P < .001; 95% confidence in-terval: 1.456-2.785). The positive number of ARAs was significantly higher when photoreceptor disruption was observed on optical coherence tomography, or severe dys-function was observed in electroretinography ( P = .022 and P = .029, respectively).center dot CONCLUSIONS: The profiles of ARAs in the AIR group were different from those in the RP and normal controls. The higher number of positive ARAs suggests a higher possibility of AIR diagnosis. ARAs should be used as ad-junct tools for the clinical diagnosis of AIR. (Am J Ophthalmol 2023;245: 145-154.
