| ○ | ○ | Article | Nonparametric Bayesian modeling for non-normal data through a transformation | In many applications, modeling based on a normal kernel is preferred because not only does the normal kernel belong to the family of stable distributions, but also it is easy to satisfy the stationary condition in the stochastic process. However, the characteristic of the data, such as count or proportion, is a major obstacle to complete modeling based on a normal distribution. To solve a limited boundary or non -normal distribution problem, we provided a novel transformation method and proposed a nonparametric Bayesian approach based on a normal kernel of the transformed variable. In particular, the provided transformation transforms any probability space into a real space and is free from the constraints of the previous transformation, such as skewness, presence of power, and bounded domains. Another advantage was that it was possible to use the Dirichlet process mixture model with full conditional posterior distributions for all parameters, leading to a fast convergence rate in the Markov chain Monte Carlo. The proposed methodology was illustrated with simulated datasets and two real datasets with non -normal distribution problems. In addition, to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methodology, the comparison with the transformed Bernstein polynomial model was made in the real data analysis. | Kim, Sangwan; Kim, Yongku; Seo, Jung -In | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Stat, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Basic Sci, KNU LAMP Res Ctr, Daegu, South Korea; Andong Natl Univ, Dept Data Sci, Andong, South Korea | 59320974600; 47962102500; 56019284300 | kim.1252@knu.ac.kr;leehoo1928@gmail.com; | AIMS MATHEMATICS | AIMS MATH | 2473-6988 | 9 | 7 | SCIE | MATHEMATICS, APPLIED;MATHEMATICS | 2024 | 1.8 | 8.4 | 0 | 2025-04-16 | 0 | 0 | blocked Gibbs sampler; Dirichlet process mixture; nonparametric Bayesian; transformation; transformed Bernstein polynomial | DENSITY-ESTIMATION; DISTRIBUTIONS; FAMILY | blocked Gibbs sampler; Dirichlet process mixture; nonparametric Bayesian; transformation; transformed Bernstein polynomial | English | 2024 | 2024 | 10.3934/math.2024883 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Predictive analysis of doubly Type-II censored models | The application of a doubly Type-II censoring scheme, where observations are censored at both the left and right ends, is often used in various fields including social science, psychology, and economics. However, the observed sample size under this censoring scheme may not be large enough to apply a likelihood-based approach due to the occurrence of censoring at both ends. To effectively ff ectively respond to this difficulty, ffi culty, we propose a pivotal-based approach within a doubly Type-II censoring framework, focusing on two key aspects: Estimation for parameters of interest and prediction for missing or censored samples. The proposed approach offers ff ers two prominent advantages, compared to the likelihood-based approach. First, this approach leads to exact confidence intervals for unknown parameters. Second, it addresses prediction problems in a closed-form manner, ensuring computational efficiency. ffi ciency. Moreover, novel algorithms using a pseudorandom sequence, which are introduced to implement the proposed approach, have remarkable scalability. The superiority and applicability of the proposed approach are substantiated in Monte Carlo simulations and real-world case analysis through a comparison with the likelihood-based approach. | Jeon, Young Eun; Kim, Yongku; Seo, Jung-In | Andong Natl Univ, Dept Data Sci, Andong 36729, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Stat, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Basic Sci, KNU G LAMP Res Ctr, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 57215579066; 47962102500; 56019284300 | kim.1252@knu.ac.kr;leehoo1928@gmail.com; | AIMS MATHEMATICS | AIMS MATH | 2473-6988 | 9 | 10 | SCIE | MATHEMATICS, APPLIED;MATHEMATICS | 2024 | 1.8 | 8.4 | 0 | 2025-05-07 | 0 | 0 | doubly Type-II censoring scheme; generalized confidence interval; likelihood-based; inference; pivotal quantity; prediction | INTERVAL ESTIMATION; INFERENCE | doubly Type-II censoring scheme; generalized confidence interval; likelihood-based inference; pivotal quantity; prediction | English | 2024 | 2024 | 10.3934/math.20241383 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | A nonconjugated radical polymer enables bimodal memory and in-sensor computing operation | This study reports intrinsic multimodal memristivity of a nonconjugated radical polymer with ambient stability. Organic memristive devices represent powerful candidates for biorealistic data storage and processing. However, there exists a substantial knowledge gap in realizing the synthetic biorealistic systems capable of effectively emulating the cooperative and multimodal activation processes in biological systems. In addition, conventional organic memristive materials are centered on conjugated small and macromolecules, making them synthetically challenging or difficult to process. In this work, we first describe the intrinsic resistive switching of the radical polymer that resulted in an exceptional state retention of >10(5) s and on/off ratio of >10(6). Next, we demonstrate its bimodal cooperative switching, in response to the proton accumulation as a biological input. Last, we expand our system toward an advanced in-sensor computing system. Our research demonstrates a nonconjugated radical polymer with intrinsic memristivity, which is directly applicable to future electronics including data storage, neuromorphics, and in-sensor computing. | Ko, Jaehyoung; Kim, Daeun; Nguyen, Quynh H.; Lee, Changhyeon; Kim, Namju; Lee, Hoyeon; Eo, Joohwan; Kwon, Ji Eon; Jeon, Seung-Yeol; Jang, Byung Chul; Im, Sung Gap; Joo, Yongho | Korea Inst Sci & Technol KIST, Inst Adv Composite Mat, Jeonbuk 55324, South Korea; Korea Adv Inst Sci & Technol KAIST, Dept Chem & Biomol Engn, Daejeon 34141, South Korea; Gwangju Inst Sci & Technol, Sch Mat Sci & Engn, Gwangju 61005, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect & Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Seoul Natl Univ, Dept Mat Sci & Engn, 1 Gwanak Ro, Seoul 08826, South Korea; Jeonbuk Natl Univ, Ind Acad Convergence Res, Dept JBNU KIST, 567 Baekje Daero, Jeonju 54896, Jeonbuk, South Korea; Korea Univ Sci & Technol UST, KIST Sch, Div Nano & Informat Technol, Jeonbuk 55324, South Korea | Kwon, Ji Eon/I-8067-2013; Jang, Byung Chul/GYV-0656-2022; Im, Sung/C-1823-2011 | 57195542069; 56445935100; 58482155100; 57207257308; 58119785900; 59254926700; 59236142300; 56397496000; 55249610600; 9238827900; 14420979700; 55350488600 | bc.jang@knu.ac.kr;sgim@kaist.ac.kr;yjoo0727@kist.re.kr; | SCIENCE ADVANCES | SCI ADV | 2375-2548 | 10 | 32 | SCIE | MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCIENCES | 2024 | 12.5 | 8.5 | 0.82 | 2025-05-07 | 7 | 3 | CHARGE-TRANSPORT; NONVOLATILE; DEVICES | Elastomers; Free radical reactions; Memristors; Virtual storage; polymer; proton; Activation process; Ambient stability; Data storage; Knowledge gaps; Multi-modal; Nonconjugated; Organics; Radical polymers; Resistive switching; Sensor computing; article; controlled study; electronics; information storage; macromolecule; memory; Conjugated polymers | English | 2024 | 2024-08-09 | 10.1126/sciadv.adp0778 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | alpha Beach: Self-attention-based spatiotemporal network for skillful prediction of shoreline changes multiple days ahead | We developed a self-attention-based spatiotemporal network called alpha Beach that uses spatiotemporal representation learning for skillful prediction of shoreline changes multiple days ahead. The proposed model predicts the spatiotemporal position of the shoreline up to seven consecutive days in the future based on hydrodynamic forcing of ocean waves and tide data for the past 30 consecutive days. It is further divided into alpha Beach-w/o IC and alphaBeach-w/ IC depending on whether or not the beach state of the antecedent historical shoreline information is used as the initial condition. alpha Beach-w/o IC, which does not incorporate this information, learns the sequential relationship between hydrodynamic forcing and shoreline to estimate overall trends of shoreline changes including seasonal oscillation from the point in time after model training, given only the ocean waves and tides. alphaBeach-w/ IC does incorporate antecedent historical shoreline information to greatly enhance its predictive accuracy of shoreline progradation, retreat, and beach rotation for short-term time scales and for extreme storm events. The proposed model was applied to Tairua Beach, New Zealand, and it demonstrated superior predictive accuracy compared to previous methods and matched current understanding of accretion-dominated and oscillation-dominated shoreline changes. | Kim, Jinah; Kim, Taekyung; Yun, Miyoung; Kim, Inho; Do, Kideok | Korea Inst Ocean Sci & Technol, Coastal Disaster Res Ctr, Busan 49111, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Comp Sci & Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Korea Maritime & Ocean Univ, Dept Ocean Engn, Busan 49112, South Korea; Kangwon Natl Univ, Dept Earth & Environm Engn, Samcheok 25913, South Korea | ; Do, Kideok/AHD-8394-2022 | 55720345100; 59471665700; 57413327200; 57203357786; 36561293000 | jakim@kiost.ac.kr;yunmy@g.kmou.ac.kr;kddo@kmou.ac.kr; | APPLIED OCEAN RESEARCH | APPL OCEAN RES | 0141-1187 | 1879-1549 | 153 | SCIE | ENGINEERING, OCEAN;OCEANOGRAPHY | 2024 | 4.4 | 8.5 | 0 | 2025-05-07 | 0 | 0 | Shoreline change; Multi-step-ahead forecasting; Spatiotemporal representation learning; Shoreline progradation-retreat-beach rotation | COASTAL; VARIABILITY; RESILIENCE; PATTERNS; ROTATION; WEATHER; CLIMATE | Multi-step-ahead forecasting; Self-attention-based encoder–decoder network; Shoreline change; Shoreline progradation-retreat-beach rotation; Spatiotemporal representation learning | New Zealand; North Island; Tairua; Waikato; Prediction models; Day-ahead; Encoder-decoder; Multi-step-ahead forecasting; Multisteps; Progradation; Self-attention-based encoder–decoder network; Shoreline change; Shoreline progradation-retreat-beach rotation; Spatiotemporal networks; Spatiotemporal representation learning; hydrodynamics; learning; ocean wave; oscillation; shoreline; shoreline change; spatiotemporal analysis; Water waves | English | 2024 | 2024-12 | 10.1016/j.apor.2024.104292 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | An Ultrasoft and Flexible PDMS-Based Balloon-Type Implantable Device for Controlled Drug Delivery | Non-biodegradable implants have undergone extensive investigation as drug delivery devices to enable advanced healthcare toward personalized medicine. However, fibroblast encapsulation is one of the major challenges in all non-biodegradable implants, besides other challenges such as high initial burst, risk of membrane rupture, high onset time, non-conformal contact with tissues, and tissue damage. To tackle such challenges, we propose a novel ultrasoft and flexible balloon-type drug delivery device for unidirectional and long-term controlled release. The ultrasoft balloon-type device (USBD) was fabricated by using selective bonding between 2 polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes and injecting a fluid into the non-bonded area between them. The balloon acted as a reservoir containing a liquid drug, and at the same time, the membrane of the balloon itself acted as the pathway for release based on diffusion. The release was modulated by tuning the thickness and composition of the PDMS membrane. Regardless of the thickness and composition, all devices exhibited zero-order release behavior. The longest zero-order release and nearly zero-order release were achieved for 30 days and 58 days at a release rate of 1.16 mu g/ day and 1.68 mu g/day, respectively. In vivo evaluation was performed for 35 days in living rats, where the USBD maintained zero-order and nearly zero-order release for 28 days and 35 days, respectively. Thanks to the employment of ultrasoft and flexible membranes and device design, the USBD could achieve minimal tissue damage and foreign body responses. It is expected that the proposed device may provide a novel approach for long-term drug delivery with new therapeutic modalities. | Muhammad, Tausif; Park, Byungwook; Intisar, Aseer; Kim, Minseok S.; Park, Jin-Kyu; Kim, Sohee | Daegu Gyeongbuk Inst Sci & Technol, Dept Robot & Mechatron Engn, Daegu 42988, South Korea; Daegu Gyeongbuk Inst Sci & Technol, Dept New Biol, Daegu 42988, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Vet Med, Dept Vet Pathol, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Kim, Sohee/N-4123-2017; Kim, Minseok/AAJ-4797-2020 | 57215080443; 57223900884; 57211711117; 57191998332; 35213723500; 55958147000 | soheekim@dgist.ac.kr; | BIOMATERIALS RESEARCH | BIOMATER RES | 1226-4601 | 2055-7124 | 28 | SCIE | ENGINEERING, BIOMEDICAL;MATERIALS SCIENCE, BIOMATERIALS | 2024 | 9.6 | 8.5 | 0 | 2025-04-16 | 1 | 0 | CONTROLLED-RELEASE; MECHANISMS; PREVENTION; MICROCHIP; DIFFUSION; FIBROSIS; FAILURE; SYSTEMS | acetylsalicylic acid; dimeticone; enrofloxacin; meloxicam; animal cell; animal experiment; animal tissue; Article; biocompatibility; cell viability; chemical composition; controlled drug release; controlled study; drug delivery system; drug distribution; drug implantation; in vitro study; in vivo study; male; membrane; mouse; nonhuman; rat; thickness | English | 2024 | 2024-03-28 | 10.34133/bmr.0012 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||

| ○ | ○ | Article | Challenging Modeling for Ohm's Law through Open-Ended In-depth Inquiry | Although Ohm's law contains various possibilities in teaching and learning scientific inquiry, it is rare for students to experience an authentic inquiry. Thus, we designed an open-ended in-depth inquiry about Ohm's law and made students conduct it. To do this, we developed a laboratory activity for students following a standard method of Ohm's law experiment. After that, we induced them to discover the faults and difficulties in the existing inquiry method. And then, an open-ended in-depth inquiry experiment was conducted to solve the identified problems. Students considered various experimental equipment such as a Wheatstone bridge, a variable resistor, and graphite. They also developed to investigate contact resistance, device resistance, and thermal noise using creative techniques such as the 4-point probe method. We examined students' learning through the activity and their recognition of it. As a result of the open inquiry, students can make various creative efforts to obtain reliable theoretical and experimental results. They showed diverse modeling activities like scientists and thought positively about the inquiry. This study expects science learning to be transformed into "doing science" to help students foster not only a broader understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI) but a confirmation of the nature of scientific knowledge (NOSK). | Kim, Minchul; Ha, Sangwoo | Kongju Natl Univ, Dept Phys Educ, 56 Gongjudaehak Ro, Gongjusi 32588, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Phys Educ, 80 Daehakro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 57218082314; 55215468100 | hswgcb@knu.ac.kr; | SCIENCE & EDUCATION | SCI EDUC-NETHERLANDS | 0926-7220 | 1573-1901 | 33 | 4 | SSCI;AHCI;SCIE | EDUCATION & EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH;HISTORY & PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE | 2024 | 2.5 | 8.5 | 0 | 2025-05-07 | 0 | 0 | 21ST-CENTURY SKILLS; THINKING; MULTITASKING; STUDENTS | English | 2024 | 2024-08 | 10.1007/s11191-023-00417-8 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Characteristics of Cs pollucite synthesized at various Cs loadings for immobilization of radioactive Cs | Radioactive Cs is an important fission product known for the generation of a large amount of heat. Several ceramic matrices have been proposed to effectively immobilize radioactive Cs. Among them, pollucite stands out owing to its exceptional thermal and structural durability, low solubility in water, and high Cs retention. This investigation focused on the preparation and assessment of an appropriate precursor for a waste form tailored to the disposal of Cs-loaded silica-alumina (SA) filters. We synthesized simulated Cs-loaded SA filters and transformed them via calcination into a Cs pollucite (CsAlSi2O6) phase. To investigate the influence of Cs loading, five samples with different ratios of the Cs precursor and matrix were synthesized and subsequently subjected to characterization and chemical durability assessment. Depending on the Cs content, the calcination process led to a phase transformation, resulting in the formation of CsAlSiO4 and/or Cs pollucite (CsAlSi2O6). Following calcination, the degree of crystallinity of the samples increased, and in certain instances, their surfaces were covered with agglomerated particles. Building upon prior research, chemical equations elucidating the phase transformation of both the matrix material and Cs pollucite (CsAlSi2O6) were formulated. The chemical durability of the samples was evaluated via the product consistency test-A method. The lowest Cs leaching rate was 3.86 x 10-4 g/m2 & sdot;day for the sample comprising a Cs2O/matrix ratio of 0.2 and calcined at 1200 degrees C. The high leaching rates observed in certain P-1200 samples can be attributed to the presence of CsAlSiO4. The leaching behavior of Al resembled that of Cs. The leaching rate of Si remained consistent across the samples heat treated at 1200 degrees C (P-1200) , it was lower than those of samples calcined at 1000 degrees C (P-1000). P-1200 is expected to be a suitable precursor of the waste form tailored to Cs immobilization. | Kim, Ga-Yeong; Shin, Seong-Sik; Lee, Byeonggwan; Choi, Jung-Hoon; Kang, Hyun Woo; Pyo, Jae-Young; Yang, Jae Hwan; Park, Hwan-Seo; Lee, Ki Rak | Korea Atom Energy Res Inst, 111,Daedeok Daero 989 Beon Gil, Daejeon 34057, South Korea; Chungnam Natl Univ, Dept Environm Engn, 99 Daehak Ro, Daejeon 34134, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Hydrogen & Renewable Energy, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | ; Lee, Byeonggwan/HPD-2363-2023; Kim, Ga-yeong/HPE-4623-2023 | 57766427400; 57765349600; 57201269846; 56227488100; 55128039500; 57213033278; 55240130900; 56175751900; 14420116600 | kirakki@kaeri.re.kr; | JOURNAL OF NUCLEAR MATERIALS | J NUCL MATER | 0022-3115 | 1873-4820 | 588 | SCIE | MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;NUCLEAR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | 2024 | 3.2 | 8.5 | 3.8 | 2025-04-16 | 12 | 13 | Cs pollucite; Ceramic waste form; Radioactive cesium; Leaching test; Chemical durability | MULLITE FORMATION; HYDROTHERMAL SYNTHESIS; PHASE-TRANSFORMATION; AQUEOUS-SOLUTIONS; NEUTRON-DIFFRACTION; CRYSTAL-STRUCTURE; FISSION-PRODUCTS; THERMAL-BEHAVIOR; CHEMICAL-STATE; POTENTIAL HOST | Ceramic waste form; Chemical durability; Cs pollucite; Leaching test; Radioactive cesium | Alumina; Aluminum oxide; Calcination; Cesium; Cesium compounds; Crystallinity; Durability; Fission products; Leaching; Linear transformations; Phase transitions; Radioactive wastes; Radioactivity; Silica; Waste disposal; Ceramic waste forms; Chemical durability; Cs pollucite; Immobilisation; Leaching rates; Leaching test; Pollucites; Radioactive cesiums; Synthesised; Waste forms; Zeolites | English | 2024 | 2024-01 | 10.1016/j.jnucmat.2023.154781 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Customized Hydrogel Films for MicroRNA Super-Resolution Imaging in Liquid Biopsies | Tissue biopsy for early diagnosis and monitoring comes with several challenges, such as its invasiveness, and issues related to tissue heterogeneity in sampling. To address these issues, researchers have proposed a noninvasive approach called liquid biopsy, which uses blood samples to detect specific noncoding RNA (microRNA, miRNA). However, the current process of isolating and amplifying miRNA can be time-consuming and yield nonspecific results. In this study, a new super-resolution imaging tool is introduced that utilizes a thin, hydrogel-based liquid view (LV) film. This film can undergo a ninefold expansion and allows the analysis of cells obtained from liquid biopsy. The potential of the LV film is validated as a tool for early diagnosis and prognosis by testing biofluids derived from a variety of diseases. This method is confirmed to accurately analyze a greater number of miRNAs with higher sensitivity in a shorter time compared to other analytical methods. These findings suggest that the LV film provides high specificity, and multiplexing in detecting small amounts of miRNAs within cells, making it suitable for 3D implementation. It is proposed that liquid biopsy with LV films can be a solution to limitations related to the invasiveness, cost, and time-consuming nature of molecular analysis. A hydrogel-based liquid view (LV) film is introduced, which incorporates liquid absorption and possesses the capability to expand cell morphology and subcellular organelles through iterative incubation and embedding reactions. The advantages of utilizing dried LV film facilitate the exploration of microRNA (miRNA) expression patterns in diverse physiological conditions and disease states, thereby enriching the understanding of cellular signaling and disease mechanisms. image | Lee, Mirae; Woo, Jiwon; Kim, Kyoung-Tae; Moon, Seul-A; Park, Hyeong Cheon; Kim, Tae Yeon; Park, Jeong-Yoon | Yonsei Univ, Coll Med, Gangnam Severance Hosp, Dept Neurosurg,Spine & Spinal Cord Inst, Seoul 06273, South Korea; Yonsei Univ, Coll Med, Grad Sch Med Sci, Brain Korea Project 21,Dept Neurosurg, Seoul 03722, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Dept Neurosurg, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Yonsei Univ, Coll Med, Gangnam Severance Hosp, Dept Internal Med, Seoul 06273, South Korea | ; Woo, Jiwon/HTL-2964-2023 | 56054231100; 56479856100; 57201369790; 59173106600; 58835435400; 57211217935; 57329879100 | spinepjy@yuhs.ac; | ADVANCED HEALTHCARE MATERIALS | ADV HEALTHC MATER | 2192-2640 | 2192-2659 | 13 | 22 | SCIE | ENGINEERING, BIOMEDICAL;MATERIALS SCIENCE, BIOMATERIALS;NANOSCIENCE & NANOTECHNOLOGY | 2024 | 9.6 | 8.5 | 0 | 2025-05-07 | 0 | 0 | intractable diseases; liquid biopsy; liquid view film; microRNA; super-resolution imaging | EXPANSION; BIOMARKER; PLASMA; INJURY; CELLS; RATS | intractable diseases; liquid biopsy; liquid view film; microRNA; super-resolution imaging | Humans; Hydrogels; Liquid Biopsy; Methylgalactosides; MicroRNAs; Hydrogels; Optical resolving power; RNA; Tissue; brain derived neurotrophic factor; buprenorphine; cefazolin; ciprofloxacin; hydrogel; isoflurane; kanamycin; microRNA; tiletamine plus zolazepam; untranslated RNA; xylazine; hydrogel; hydrogel film; methylgalactoside; microRNA; Early diagnosis; Hydrogel films; Intractable disease; Invasiveness; Liquid biopsy; Liquid view film; Microrna; Super resolution imaging; Tissue biopsies; Tissue heterogeneity; animal experiment; animal model; apoptosis; Article; blood sampling; computer language; diabetic nephropathy; glomerulosclerosis; HEK293T cell line; Hep-G2 cell line; HT22 cell line; human; human cell; hypoxia; imaging; immunohistochemistry; liquid biopsy; membranous glomerulonephritis; microarray analysis; nonhuman; peripheral blood mononuclear cell; rat; reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction; sequence analysis; spectrophotometry; spinal cord injury; super resolution imaging; three-dimensional imaging; chemistry; liquid biopsy; procedures; Biopsy | English | 2024 | 2024-09 | 10.1002/adhm.202303781 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |
| ○ | ○ | Article | Enhanced dual-mode imaging: Superior photoacoustic and ultrasound endoscopy in live pigs using a transparent ultrasound transducer | Dual-mode photoacoustic/ultrasound endoscopy (ePAUS) is a promising tool for preclinical and clinical interventions. To be clinically useful, ePAUS must deliver high-performance ultrasound imaging comparable to commercial systems and maintain high photoacoustic imaging performance at long working distances. This requires a transducer with an intact physical aperture and coaxial alignment of acoustic and optical beams within the probe, a challenging integration task. We present a high-performance ePAUS probe with a miniaturized, optically transparent ultrasonic transducer (TUT) called ePAUS-TUT. The 1.8-mm-diameter probe, fitting into standard endoscopic channels, aligns acoustic and optical beams efficiently, achieving commercial-level ultrasound and high-resolution photoacoustic imaging over long distances. These imaging capabilities were validated through in vivo imaging of a rat's rectum and a pig's esophagus. | ○ | ○ | Article | High-Throughput Screening of 3-Dimensional Co-culture Hair Follicle Mimetic Tissue with an Enhanced Extracellular Matrix for the Screening of Hair Growth-Promoting Compounds | Hair follicle cells reside within a complex extracellular matrix (ECM) environment in vivo, where physical and chemical cues regulate their behavior. The ECM is crucial for hair follicle development and regeneration, particularly through epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. Current in vitro models often fail to replicate this complexity, leading to inconsistencies in evaluating hair loss treatments. Advanced 3-dimensional (3D) culture systems that better mimic in vivo ECM dynamics are needed for more effective therapeutic assessments. Here, we introduce a 3D co-culture system designed to replicate in vivo ECM dynamics. The system incorporates primary dermal papilla cells from human patients, co-cultured with neonatal keratinocytes. This platform facilitates uniform spheroid formation through cell sliding and aggregation, enabling the evaluation of approximately 60 spheroids per well. The model is optimized for high-throughput screening, allowing precise assessments of hair-loss-inducing compounds under consistent conditions. We successfully generated dermal papilla cell and keratinocyte spheroids that closely resemble the native ECM structure, providing an optimal microenvironment for studying hair follicle biology. The 3D co-culture model supported efficient spheroid formation with consistent cellular organization and polarization, along with enhanced ECM-related gene expression crucial for hair follicle regeneration. Uniform spheroid formation and reproducibility were demonstrated across experiments. Overall, the novel 3D co-culture system provides a robust platform for replicating in vivo-like ECM conditions, enabling effective assessment of potential hair loss treatments through epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. Its high-throughput capacity, combined with reproducibility and ease of use, makes it a valuable tool for screening therapeutic candidates and advancing hair loss treatment development. | Pham, Huyen T. | ○ | ○ | Article | Latent stem cell-stimulating radially aligned electrospun nanofibrous patches for chronic tympanic membrane perforation therapy | Chronic tympanic membrane (TM) perforation is a tubotympanic disease caused by either traumatic injury or inflammation. A recent study demonstrated significant progress in promoting the regeneration of chronic TM perforations through the application of nanofibers with radially aligned nanostructures and controlled release of growth factors. However, radially aligned nanostructures with stem cell-stimulating factors have never been used. In this study, insulin-like growth factor binding factor 2 (IGFBP2)-incorporated radially aligned nanofibrous patches (IRA-NFPs) were developed and applied to regenerate chronic TM perforations. The IRA-NFPs were prepared by electrospinning 8 wt% polycaprolactone in trifluoroethanol and acetic acid (9:1). Random nanofibers (RFs) and aligned nanofibers (AFs) were successfully fabricated using a flat plate and a custom-designed circular collector, respectively. The presence of IGFBP2 was confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the release of IGFBP2 was sustained for up to 20 days. In vitro studies revealed enhanced cellular proliferation and migration on AFs compared to RFs, and the incorporation of IGFBP2 further promoted these effects. Quantitative real-time PCR revealed mRNA downregulation, correlating with accelerated migration and increased cell confluency. In vivo studies showed IGFBP2-loaded RF and AF patches increased regeneration success rates by 1.59-fold and 2.23-fold, respectively, while also reducing healing time by 2.5-fold compared to the control. Furthermore, IGFBP2-incorporated AFs demonstrated superior efficacy in healing larger perforations with enhanced histological similarity to native TMs. This study, combining stem cell stimulating factors and aligned nanostructures, proposes a novel approach potentially replacing conventional surgical methods for chronic TM perforation regeneration. Statement of significance Chronic otitis media (COM) affects approximately 200 million people worldwide due to inflammation, inadequate blood supply, and lack of growth factors. Current surgical treatments have limitations like high costs and anesthetic risks. Recent research explored the use of nanofibers with radially aligned nanostructures and controlled release of growth factors to treat chronic tympanic membrane (TM) perforations. In this study, insulin-like growth factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP2)-incorporated radially aligned nanofibrous patches (IRA-NFPs) were developed and applied to regenerate chronic TM perforations. We assessed their properties and efficacy through in vitro and in vivo studies. IRA-NFPs showed promising healing capabilities with chronic TM perforation models. This innovative approach has the potential to improve COM management, reduce surgery costs, and enhance patient safety. (c) 2024 The Authors. | ○ | ○ | Article | Optimized backstepping consensus control using adaptive observer-critic-actor reinforcement learning for strict-feedback multi-agent systems | In this paper, we present a novel control method, combining observer -based optimized backstepping (OB) control, reinforcement learning (RL) strategy, and adaptive neural networks (NN), for strict -feedback multi -agent systems with unmeasurable states. The primary objective is to enhance the overall system backstepping controller by optimizing both virtual and actual controllers for corresponding subsystems. To achieve this, we develop an observer-critic-actor RL approach based on NN approximation in all backstepping steps. The observers are utilized to estimate the unmeasurable system states, while the critic-actor algorithm assesses the control performance and executes control actions. Our optimized control method offers advantages such as not requiring the state observer to satisfy the Hurwitz equation. Additionally, our designed RL algorithm is simple due to the critic-actor adaptive laws obtained by means of the negative gradient of a simple positive function associated with the partial derivative of Hamilton-Jacobi- Bellman (HJB) equation. Consequently, our proposed control method ensures that all error states of the multi -agent systems are semi -globally uniformly ultimately bounded (SGUUB), and that all outputs can synchronously follow the reference signal with desired accuracy. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of our control strategy by means of theoretical analysis and simulation results. | Zhu, Jiahao; Wen, Guoxing; Veluvolu, Kalyana C. | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect & Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Shandong Univ Aeronaut, Coll Sci, Binzhou 256600, Peoples R China; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Wen, Guoxing/AAX-7055-2021; Veluvolu, Kalyana/C-6366-2011; Veluvolu, Kalyana Chakravarthy/C-6366-2011 | 57426624100; 36464740900; 8703318200 | veluvolu@ee.knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF THE FRANKLIN INSTITUTE-ENGINEERING AND APPLIED MATHEMATICS | J FRANKLIN I | 0016-0032 | 1879-2693 | 361 | 6 | SCIE | AUTOMATION & CONTROL SYSTEMS;ENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATHEMATICS, INTERDISCIPLINARY APPLICATIONS | 2024 | 4.2 | 8.5 | 0.82 | 2025-05-07 | 3 | 3 | Optimized control; RL; State observer; Critic-actor; NN; Strict-feedback multi-agent systems | TRACKING CONTROL; NONLINEAR-SYSTEMS; NEURAL-NETWORKS; ALGORITHM | Critic–actor; NN; Optimized control; RL; State observer; Strict-feedback multi-agent systems | Adaptive control systems; Backstepping; Controllers; Feedback; Learning systems; Multi agent systems; State estimation; Adaptive observer; Consensus control; Control methods; Critic–actor; Neural-networks; Optimized control; Reinforcement learnings; Simple++; States observer; Strict-feedback multi-agent system; Reinforcement learning | English | 2024 | 2024-04 | 10.1016/j.jfranklin.2024.106693 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |
| ○ | ○ | Article | Pressure fluctuation analysis for identifying the CHF approaching condition during subcooled flow boiling through a mini-channel | This study presents a new method for predicting the Critical Heat Flux (CHF) approaching condition in subcooled flow boiling based on pressure fluctuation analysis. Through experimental investigations, water flow in an upward direction was conducted within a mini -channel with one side heated to analyze the sequential boiling phenomena, including ONB (Onset of Nucleate Boiling), OFI (Onset of Flow Instability), and CHF. While ONB was determined using the slope of the wall temperature - heat flux, OFI was determined by considering the pressure drop through the channel and outlet pressure fluctuation. By analyzing the inlet pressure fluctuations, a new condition called " the CHF approaching condition " was introduced, which serves as a CHF precursor. The CHF approaching condition was found to be approximately 90% of the CHF value across all experimental scenarios. The proposed method provides an effective tool for predicting and preventing CHF, thereby reducing the potential risk of damage to the heating surface. | Aziz, Faraz; Lee, Yong Joong; Jo, Daeseong | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Grad Sch, Dept Mech Engn, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 702701, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Mech Engn, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 57197714203; 57183248500; 16424303000 | djo@knu.ac.kr; | PROGRESS IN NUCLEAR ENERGY | PROG NUCL ENERG | 0149-1970 | 1878-4224 | 173 | SCIE | NUCLEAR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | 2024 | 3.2 | 8.5 | 0.34 | 2025-05-07 | 2 | 2 | Subcooled flow boiling; Mini-channel; CHF approaching condition; OFI; Pressure fluctuations | RECTANGULAR CHANNELS; HEAT-TRANSFER; ONSET; INSTABILITY; INCIPIENCE | CHF approaching condition; Mini-channel; OFI; Pressure fluctuations; Subcooled flow boiling | Flow of water; Condition; Critical heat flux approaching condition; Experimental investigations; Flow instabilities; Fluctuation analysis; Mini-channels; Onset of flow instability; Onset of nucleate boiling; Pressure fluctuation; Subcooled flow boiling; Heat flux | English | 2024 | 2024-08 | 10.1016/j.pnucene.2024.105289 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Probabilistic typhoon hazard and sensitivity analysis for nuclear power plant sites in Korea using logic tree | There has been an increase in typhoon intensity, and high-intensity typhoons can affect the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs). Typhoons can damage the structures, systems, and components (SSCs) of NPPs, causing core damage and the release of radioactive materials into the environment. Therefore, design criteria for the effects of natural phenomena are demanded to ensure the safety-critical SSC functions of NPPs. Also, there is a need for safety assessments of typhoons in operational NPPs, which require typhoon hazard analysis. In this study, we derived typhoon hazards for NPPs in Korea using Logic Tree and Monte Carlo simulations. We performed sensitivity analysis on the typhoon hazards based on the distances (up to 100 km) from the NPP sites. Among other NPP sites, the typhoon hazard of the Kori site showed the highest wind speed, and the Hanul site showed the lowest wind speed. The uncertainty of the wind speed increased as the recurrence interval of the typhoon hazard increased. We compared the typhoon hazard in the areas of interest to that within 100 km. The range of the distance deviation for the Hanbit site's typhoon hazard was within mu +/-sigma up to 75 km, while for the other sites, it was within mu +/-sigma up to 100 km. | Kim, Gungyu; Kwag, Shinyoung; Choun, Youngsun; Eem, Seunghyun | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Convergence & Fus Syst Engn, Daegu, South Korea; Hanbat Natl Univ, Dept Civil & Environm Engn, Daejeon, South Korea; CENITS Corp Inc, Inst Technol, Uiryeong, South Korea | Eem, Seunghyun/KVB-1493-2024 | 58487834500; 55779491500; 7801687006; 52363442900 | eemsh@knu.ac.kr; | PROGRESS IN NUCLEAR ENERGY | PROG NUCL ENERG | 0149-1970 | 1878-4224 | 176 | SCIE | NUCLEAR SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | 2024 | 3.2 | 8.5 | 0 | 2025-05-07 | 0 | 0 | Logic tree; Monte Carlo simulation; Probabilistic typhoon wind hazard assessment; Wind hazard curve; Sensitivity analysis | HURRICANE WIND SPEEDS | Logic tree; Monte Carlo simulation; Probabilistic typhoon wind hazard assessment; Sensitivity analysis; Wind hazard curve | Computer circuits; Hazards; Hurricanes; Intelligent systems; Monte Carlo methods; Nuclear energy; Nuclear fuels; Nuclear power plants; Radioactive materials; Wind; Hazard Assessment; Hazard curves; Logic tree; Monte Carlo's simulation; Power plant sites; Probabilistic typhoon wind hazard assessment; Probabilistics; Wind hazard curve; Wind hazards; Sensitivity analysis | English | 2024 | 2024-11 | 10.1016/j.pnucene.2024.105347 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 |
