| ○ | Article | Semantic network analysis of the biotechnology domain in Iranian high school biology textbooks | Textbooks can have a fundamental and positive effect on both learning and teaching. As such, in order to understand how students structure concepts in their minds, it is necessary to analyze the structure in which those concepts presented in textbooks are described. This study examined a network of concepts used in the domain of biotechnology in the Iranian 12th grade biology textbook and investigated the alignment of science concepts used in its sub-domains. The findings of this study suggest that too many concepts, as well as unconnected ones, were used in biotechnology domain, which led to a complicated conceptual network. Therefore, this paper recommends that the number of biology concepts described in the later text books in the biotechnology domain at Iranian high schools should be reduced in order to facilitate a better formation of connections between concepts and their descriptions. © 2022. by the authors; licensee Modestum. | ○ | ○ | Article | Semantic network analysis on the geography of food as represented in textbooks: for alternative food education for young people | This study compared the structural characteristics of the geography and pedagogy of food for young people, which is represented in geography textbooks used by the IBDP and Korean world geography. By using the KrKwic, which is a semantic network analysis software, the study analyzed the extent to which factors related to the geography and pedagogy of food for young people were reflected in two geography textbooks as well as the semantic network and degree centrality by which these factors formed each other. The results suggest that future world geography textbooks need to consider alternative competencies for young people, such as global citizenship, food citizenship, and environmental sustainability, when dealing with the geography of food. | Cho, Chul-Ki | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Geog Educ, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Geog Educ, Dague, South Korea | 57221970337 | ckcho@knu.ac.kr; | COGENT SOCIAL SCIENCES | COGENT SOC SCI | 2331-1886 | 8 | 1 | ESCI | SOCIAL SCIENCES, INTERDISCIPLINARY | 2022 | 1.5 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 0 | geography textbook; geography of food; content analysis; semantic network analysis | CITIZENSHIP; NUTRITION | content analysis; geography of food; geography textbook; semantic network analysis | English | 2022 | 2022-12-31 | 10.1080/23311886.2022.2148417 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||
| ○ | ○ | Proceedings Paper | Semantic Segmentation of UAV image using Combined U-net and heterogeneous UAV imagery datasets | Semantic segmentation of urban areas can provide useful information for analyzing and detecting changes in urban development. Recently, numerous remote sensing image datasets from various platforms have been acquired, and various semantic segmentation studies using them have been conducted. However, they do not contain many images because of their large data capacity and difficulty in constructing label data. Furthermore, it is difficult to use them simultaneously because each dataset has a different spatial resolution, shooting angle, and meaningful objects. In this study, two different UAV image datasets, such as UAVid semantic segmentation and semantic drone datasets, were used to train a combined U-net model to use heterogeneous remote sensing datasets for semantic segmentation tasks simultaneously. The UAVid dataset has a flight height of 50 m and 300 images with eight classes. However, the semantic drone dataset was acquired at an altitude of 5-30 m above the ground and contains 598 images with 20 classes. The combined U-net model is based on the U-net architecture, but it receives input from two different data sources. The experimental results showed that learning two datasets with a combined U-net improved semantic segmentation accuracy more than learning each data with a U-net. This study confirms the ability to train two different datasets acquired from different places and platforms simultaneously; thus, evaluating the applicability of semantic segmentation studies using heterogeneous remote sensing datasets. | Song, A. | Kyungpook Natl Univ, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu, South Korea | 56496312900 | ars@knu.ac.kr; | REMOTE SENSING TECHNOLOGIES AND APPLICATIONS IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTS VII | 0277-786X | 1996-756X | 12269 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 0 | Semantic segmentation; UAV; combined U-net; heterogeneous dataset | combined U-net; heterogeneous dataset; Semantic segmentation; UAV | Remote sensing; Semantic Segmentation; Semantics; Urban growth; Combined U-net; Heterogeneous datasets; Image datasets; Large data; Net model; Remote sensing images; Remote-sensing; Semantic segmentation; Urban areas; Urban development; Drones | English | 2022 | 2022 | 10.1117/12.2638354 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||||||||
| ○ | ○ | Proceedings Paper | Sensor Fusion and Device Collaboration based Smart Plug Hub Architecture for Precise Identification of ADL in Real-Time | In this paper, we propose a Smart Plug Hub Architecture for real-time measurement of Activities of Daily Living (ADL), a medical index indicating daily living performance. Currently, ADL is evaluated through patient interviews, behavioral videos, or behavioral tracking through wearable devices. However, the above methods have problems such as low accuracy and privacy violation. SPH overcomes the above problems through sensor fusion and device collaboration. SPH predicts the situation by detecting environmental changes according to human behavior through various environmental sensors. In order to analyze continuous environmental data effectively, a technique of analyzing data divided by each part is used by receiving a segmentation triggering a signal that allows data to be analyzed by region from surrounding IoT devices. By visualizing the collected data, SPH was able to predict in real-time specific human behavior in various environments. | Kang, Homin; Kang, SoonJu | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect & Elect Engn, Daegu, South Korea | 57952244800; 55666313900 | hmkang4110@gmail.com;sjkang@ee.knu.ac.kr; | 2022 27TH IEEE SYMPOSIUM ON COMPUTERS AND COMMUNICATIONS (IEEE ISCC 2022) | 1530-1346 | 0.27 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 1 | Activities of Daily Living; Sensor Fusion; Device Collaboration; Edge Computing; Signal Processing | Activities of Daily Living; Device Collaboration; Edge Computing; Sensor Fusion; Signal Processing | Behavioral research; Signal processing; Activities of Daily Living; Device collaboration; Edge computing; Human behaviors; Real time measurements; Real- time; Sensor device; Sensor fusion; Signal-processing; Smart plugs; Edge computing | English | 2022 | 2022 | 10.1109/iscc55528.2022.9913055 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||||||||||
| ○ | Conference paper | Sentiment Analysis on Drug Reviews Using Diverse Classification Techniques | Free text reviews are abundantly distributed over the internet among the standard population of the world. Although online doctors were consulted during the pandemic, many drugs are taken without prescription by ordinary people. Reviews are distributed about the medicines through online feeds, posts and blogs, which are merely helpful in identifying the side effects and their adverse reactions in combination with another drug or standalone adverse reactions. Spelling mistakes, jargon and short names are normalized throughout the medical terminologies using Natural language processing (NLP) and RxNorm from the reviews extracted from these sources. The concept of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) is used to mine the association rules for the drug interactions when used in conjugation with another drug, and the idea of Adaptive Fuzzy logic neural networks is used to validate the results of association rules derived from the BERT. Inconsistencies identified by the regulations generated were rejected efficiently by the Support vector machines (SVM), Radial Basis Function (RBF)and the system shows 60.11 percentage of accuracy with 10 cross-fold validation, whereas the results are equivalent to the accuracy obtained using SVM with RBF kernel. The data set is reduced from its dimension using Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) by applying the mining process and BERT on two drugs, namely 'Azithromycin' in conjugation with Buprenorphine has Type 'A' side effects, and Prozac in conjugation with Metronidazole shows different side effects. Deplin and Zoloft give very positive symptoms and are independent of dosage interactions. © 2022 IEEE. | Duraisamy, Premkumar; Natarajan, Yuvaraj; Preethaa, K.R.Sri; Mouthami, K. | KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Coimbatore, India; KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Coimbatore, India; Research Professor Intelligent Construction Automation Center Kyungpook National University, Deagu, South Korea; KPR Institute of Engineering and Technology, Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Coimbatore, India | 58093357700; 57204528689; 57214320928; 55786539900 | Proceedings of the 2022 3rd International Conference on Communication, Computing and Industry 4.0, C2I4 2022 | 1.95 | 2025-06-25 | 6 | Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT); Linear discriminant analysis (LDA); Radial Basis Function (RBF); Support vector machines (SVM) | Association rules; Discriminant analysis; Drug interactions; Radial basis function networks; Sentiment analysis; Signal encoding; Base function; Bidirectional encoder representation from transformer; Linear discriminant analyse; Linear discriminant analyze; Radial base function; Radial basis; Sentiment analysis; Side effect; Support vector machine; Support vectors machine; Support vector machines | English | Final | 2022 | 10.1109/c2i456876.2022.10051399 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||||||||||||||||
| ○ | Article | Serological responses and protection levels in chickens administered with Newcastle disease vaccines | Vaccination against Newcastle disease (ND) is the most effective means of controlling the disease, and these vaccines are commercialized only after their safety and effectiveness have been verified through tests that comply with Korean Standards of National Lot Release for Veterinary Biologics. This study investigated whether a relatively convenient and safe serological test can be used in place of the challenge test using highly virulent ND virus. Hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were considered positive of log2 2 or more and cutoff value of 200 or more, respectively, in both live and inactivated vaccines. However, when the antibody levels of the live and inactivated vaccines induced using the Ulster 2C, KBNP-C4152R2L, and K148/08 strains were compared, the antibody titers for inactivated vaccines were significantly higher than those for live vaccines in both the HI assay and ELISA. A strong positive correlation was observed between HI and ELISA antibody titers. The live vaccines corresponded to a survival rates of ≥ 80% and the inactivated vaccines corresponded to 100% survival rates. This study confirmed that standard efficacy tests can serve as serological tests, and can replace the challenge test and that the vaccine approval process can be improved. © 2022 The Korean Society of Veterinary Science. | Seung, Geumji; Kim, Jiye; Kim, Hyobi; Kim, Ji-Yeon; Jang, Yang-Ho; Kim, Yeon-Hee; Her, Moon; Yi, Seong-Joon; Lee, Keun-Woo; Jang, Il; Lee, Young Ju | Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; College of Veterinary Medicine and Zoonoses Research Institute, Kyungpook National University, Daegu, 41566, South Korea; College of Veterinary Medicine and Zoonoses Research Institute, Kyungpook National University, Daegu, 41566, South Korea; Veterinary Drugs and Biologics Division, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA), Gimcheon, 39660, South Korea; College of Veterinary Medicine and Zoonoses Research Institute, Kyungpook National University, Daegu, 41566, South Korea | 58077650900; 55363389100; 58077365900; 58383562200; 43762069700; 57203809456; 23989046000; 55918870300; 56118254400; 56168254000; 56612134500 | moa305ho@korea.kr;youngju@knu.ac.kr; | Korean Journal of Veterinary Research | 2466-1384 | 62 | 4 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | Newcastle disease; Newcastle disease virus; serological tests; vaccine efficacy; vaccines | English | Final | 2022 | 10.14405/kjvr.20220031 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||||||||||||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Severe Ocular Hypertension in a Child with Pediatric Optic Neuritis | Purpose: To report a rare case of severe ocular hypertension following intravenous methylprednisolone treatment in a child with bilateral optic neuritis. Case summary: A 6-year-old girl presented with bilateral severe visual loss and disc swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed optic nerve enhancement, and she received high-dose intravenous methylprednisolone for 3 days and oral prednisolone 30 mg/day for 2 weeks. Two weeks after initiating treatment, ophthalmologic examination revealed an intraocular pressure (IOP) of 46 mmHg in the right eye and 42 mmHg in the left eye. The best-corrected visual acuity was 1.0 in the right eye and 0.6 in the left eye. Relative afferent pupillary defect was noted in the left eye. Fundus examination showed normal cup-to-disc ratio (0.4) in both eyes. The iridocorneal angle was open in all directions. The treatment plan included the cessation of oral prednisolone and initiation of latanoprost and dorzolamide-timolol fixed combination agent. After 12 hours, the IOP decreased to 18 mmHg in the right eye and 14 mmHg in the left eye. Six months later, her visual acuity was 1.0 in both eyes, and IOP was maintained at 11 and 13 mmHg in the right and left eye, respectively. Optic disc examination showed no sign of glaucomatous change with normal cup-to disc ratio in both eyes. Conclusions: Since steroid medication may cause asymptomatic IOP elevation, regular intraocular pressure measurements are required during steroid treatment for pediatric optic neuritis. The administration of IOP-lowering eyedrops returned IOP to the normal range without damaging the optic nerve. | Yae, Che Gyem; Oh, Jun Ho; Kim, Dai Woo; Chun, Bo Young | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Ophthalmol, 130 Dongdeok Ro, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Brain Sci & Engn Inst, Daegu, South Korea | 56048982200; 57216588714; 57095192800; 25644902100 | byjun424@hotmail.com; | JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN OPHTHALMOLOGICAL SOCIETY | J KOR OPHTHALMOL SOC | 0378-6471 | 2092-9374 | 63 | 10 | ESCI | OPHTHALMOLOGY | 2022 | 0.1 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 0 | Ocular hypertension; Optic neuritis; Pediatrics; Systemic steroid | INDUCED GLAUCOMA; METHYLPREDNISOLONE; STEROIDS | Ocular hypertension; Optic neuritis; Pediatrics; Systemic steroid | English | 2022 | 2022-10 | 10.3341/jkos.2022.63.10.883 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | Article | Shakespeare and Prisoners in Confinement Facilities: Cases of Shakespearean Productions by Prisoners of War at Dartmoor and Political Prisoners on Robben Island | This paper explores Shakespearean productions in prison facilities at Dartmoor in the United Kingdom and Robben Island in South Africa. The account of the relationship between Shakespeare and Dartmoor Prison is based on Simon Mayo’s Mad Blood Stirring (2018). Mayo takes the book’s title from Benvolio’s words, and depicts the production of Romeo and Juliet staged by American prisoners of war captured in the War of 1812. The account of the relationship between Shakespeare and Robben Island Prison is based on Matthew Hahn’s The Robben Island Shakespeare (2017). Hahn takes the book’s title from the so-called Robben Island Shakespeare, a copy of the complete works of Shakespeare which was secretly passed around a group of political prisoners in the mid-1970s. Mayo’s work and Hahn’s illustrate cases of why Shakespeare is chosen to perform in these prisons, and how Shakespearean performance appeals to the prisoners. © 2022 ELLAK | Han, Younglim | Kyungpook National University, South Korea | 57478737800 | ylhan@knu.ac.kr; | Journal of English Language and Literature | 1016-2283 | 68 | 1 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | Mad Blood Stirring; Matthew Hahn; Shakespeare; Simon Mayo; The Robben Island Shakespeare | English | Final | 2022 | 10.15794/jell.2022.68.1.003 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||||||||||||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Shape factor for the relay feedback autotuning | Relay in the feedback loop produces a stable oscillation whose cyclic steady state response contains process information of ultimate gain and ultimate period. By measuring these process data and Ziegler-Nichols type tuning rules, PID controllers can be designed. Due to its simplicity and performances, this earlier relay feedback method becomes one of the standard methods for autotuning of PID controllers. Later the first-order plus time delay (FOPTD) models are used for the relay feedback method with additional process data such as the process steady-state gain, improving autotuning performances. Like other FOPTD model-based methods, this FOPTD model-based relay feedback method is very popular in the field. However, for some high-order processes, the FOPTD model-based method shows oscillatory closed-loop responses that are not acceptable. For such processes, the critically damped second-order plus time delay (C2PTD) identifiable with the same three process information of steady state gain, ultimate gain and ultimate period can be used. Unfortunately, the C2PTD model-based relay feedback method cannot cover the whole range of processes. One solution is the selective use of FOPTD and C2PTD models. For this purpose of selection, a shape factor that uses the process measurement of average residence time is proposed here. | ○ | ○ | Article | Short-term control of diet affects cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury through modulation of mitochondrial dynamics and mitochondrial GSH | Obesity affects acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by various clinical settings, including transplantation and cisplatin-cancer therapy. However, the effect of short-term food intake change remains to be defined. Here, we investigated the effects of short-term high-fat diet intake and food restriction on cisplatin-induced AKI. Mice were fed either a high-fat diet (HFD) or a low-fat diet (LFD) for 11 days or were not fed for 40 hh (fasting), before cisplatin administration. Cisplatin-induced functional and structural damages to kidneys in both H FD- and LFD-fed mice, with greater damages in HFD-fed mice than LFD-fed mice. HFD decreased mitochondrial total glutathione (tGSH) level, along with increases in the plasma and kidney cholesterol levels. Cisplatin caused the increase of kidney cholesterol levels and oxidative stress, along with the decrease of mitochondrial tGSH levels. In addition, cisplatin-induced mitochondrial damage and apoptosis of tubular cells in both HFD- and LFD-fed mice. An increase of Fisi (mitochondria fission 1 protein), whereas a decrease of Opal (mitochondria fusion 1 protein) occurred by cisplatin. These cisplatin effects were greater in HFD-fed mice than in LFD-fed mice. Administration of mitochondria-specific antioxidant treatment during HFD feeding inhibited these cisplatin-induced changes. Fasting for 40h also significantly reduced the cisplatin-induced changes mentioned above. These data demonstrate that short-term HFD intake worsens cisplatin-induced oxidative stress by the reduction of mitochondrial tGSH, resulting in increased cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. These data newly indicate that the control of calorie intake, even for a short period, affects kidney susceptibility to injury. Although most studies described the effects of a long-term high-fat diet on the kidneys, in this study, we found that even if a high-fat diet was consumed for a short-term, physiological changes and mitochondria tGSH decrease in the kidneys, and consequently increased cisplatin-nephrotoxic susceptibility. These data suggest the association of calorie intake with kidney susceptibility to cisplatin. | Kim, Ji Su; Han, Yong Kwon; Kong, Min Jung; Park, Kwon Moo | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Anat, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, BK21 Plus, Sch Med, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Cardiovasc Res Inst, Daegu, South Korea | 57226288568; 57226292650; 57194730911; 8785448200 | kmpark@knu.ac.kr; | PHYSIOLOGICAL REPORTS | PHYSIOL REP | 2051-817X | 10 | 12 | ESCI | PHYSIOLOGY | 2022 | 2.5 | 0.61 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 6 | acute kidney injury; apoptosis; cisplatin; fasting; high-fat diet; mitochondrial damage; oxidative stress | INDUCED CELL-DEATH; INDUCED NEPHROTOXICITY; CALORIE RESTRICTION; OXIDATIVE STRESS; CANCER-CHEMOTHERAPY; INDUCED TOXICITY; SUPPLEMENTATION; INFLAMMATION; COMBINATION; RESISTANCE | acute kidney injury; apoptosis; cisplatin; fasting; high-fat diet; mitochondrial damage; oxidative stress | Acute Kidney Injury; Animals; Cholesterol; Cisplatin; Diet, High-Fat; Glutathione; Mice; Mice, Inbred C57BL; Mitochondria; Mitochondrial Dynamics; cholesterol; cisplatin; glutathione; high density lipoprotein; hydrogen peroxide; membrane protein; mitochondria fission1 protein; mitochondria fusion 1 protein; triacylglycerol; unclassified drug; cholesterol; cisplatin; glutathione; acute kidney failure; animal cell; animal experiment; animal model; animal tissue; apoptosis; Article; body weight; C57BL 6 mouse; controlled study; diet restriction; food intake; kidney tubule cell; lipid diet; low fat diet; male; mitochondrial dynamics; mitochondrion; mouse; nephrotoxicity; nonhuman; oxidative stress; paraffin embedding; transmission electron microscopy; TUNEL assay; urea nitrogen blood level; Western blotting; adverse event; animal; C57BL mouse; metabolism; mitochondrial dynamics | English | 2022 | 2022-06 | 10.14814/phy2.15348 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Silica Nanoparticle Coating of NaYF4:(Yb³⁺, Er³⁺) Upconversion Phosphor | To improve its light conversion efficiency, NaYF4:(Yb3+, Er3+) upconversion (UC) phosphor, which generates one visible photon by absorbing two or more near-infrared photons, was coated with SiO2 nanoparticles. The surface modification of phosphor was performed by using a modified sol-gel method as a function of the concentration of colloidal silica employed as the surface coating precursor. It was found that the PL intensities depend on the concentration of colloidal silica. When a 2.7 wt% concentration of colloidal silica was used, the NaYF4:(Yb3+, Er3+) phosphor exhibited a homogeneous coating with silica and an approximately 9% increase in the PL intensity, as compared with that of the non-coated sample of NaYF4:(Yb3+, Er3+) phosphor. This increase in the PL intensity can be explained by the suppression of the nonradiative recombination of electron-hole pairs via surface defects. The experimental results suggest that the surface modification of upconversion phosphors with a silica coating of the appropriate concentration is a simple and effective solution to improve the light conversion efficiency of upconversion phosphors used in optoelectronic devices. | Jang, Taehun; Kim, MaengJun; Sohn, Sang Ho | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Phys, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 57202406456; 55632768300; 7101646506 | 3rwinjang@gmail.com;kimm@kaeri.re.kr;shsohn@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF NANOMATERIALS | 1687-4110 | 1687-4129 | 2022 | 0.41 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 6 | LUMINESCENCE; YB3+ | Coatings; Conversion efficiency; Infrared devices; Light; Light emission; Optoelectronic devices; Photons; Silica nanoparticles; SiO2 nanoparticles; Sol-gel process; Sol-gels; Surface defects; Colloidal silica; Light conversion; Modified sol-gel method; Nanoparticle coatings; Near-infrared photons; PL intensity; Silica nanoparticles; SiO2 Nanoparticles; Surface-modification; Upconversion phosphors; Phosphors | English | 2022 | 2022-07-28 | 10.1155/2022/8961362 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||||||||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Silicon-Induced Tolerance against Arsenic Toxicity by Activating Physiological, Anatomical and Biochemical Regulation in Phoenix dactylifera (Date Palm) | Arsenic is a toxic metal abundantly present in agricultural, industrial, and pesticide effluents. To overcome arsenic toxicity and ensure safety for plant growth, silicon (Si) can play a significant role in its mitigation. Here, we aim to investigate the influence of silicon on date palm under arsenic toxicity by screening antioxidants accumulation, hormonal modulation, and the expression profile of abiotic stress-related genes. The results showed that arsenic exposure (As: 1.0 mM) significantly retarded growth attributes (shoot length, root length, fresh weight), reduced photosynthetic pigments, and raised reactive species levels. Contrarily, exogenous application of Si (Na2SiO3) to date palm roots strongly influenced stress mitigation by limiting the translocation of arsenic into roots and shoots as compared with the arsenic sole application. Furthermore, an enhanced accumulation of polyphenols (48%) and increased antioxidant activities (POD: 50%, PPO: 75%, GSH: 26.1%, CAT: 51%) resulted in a significant decrease in superoxide anion (O-2(center dot-): 58%) and lipid peroxidation (MDA: 1.7-fold), in silicon-treated plants, compared with control and arsenictreated plants. The Si application also reduced the endogenous abscisic acid (ABA: 38%) under normal conditions, and salicylic acid (SA: 52%) and jasmonic acid levels (JA: 62%) under stress conditions as compared with control and arsenic. Interestingly, the genes; zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP) and 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED-1) involved in ABA biosynthesis were upregulated by silicon under arsenic stress. Likewise, Si application also upregulated gene expression of plant plasma membrane ATPase (PMMA-4), aluminum-activated malate transporter (ALMT) responsible for maintaining cellular physiology, stomatal conductance, and short-chain dehydrogenases/reductases (SDR) involved in nutrients translocation. Hence, the study demonstrates the remarkable role of silicon in supporting growth and inducing arsenic tolerance by increasing antioxidant activities and endogenous hormones in date palm. The outcomes of our study can be employed in further studies to better understand arsenic tolerance and decode mechanism. | Khan, Taimoor; Bilal, Saqib; Asaf, Sajjad; Alamri, Safiya Salim; Imran, Muhammad; Khan, Abdul Latif; Al-Rawahi, Ahmed; Lee, In-Jung; Al-Harrasi, Ahmed | Univ Nizwa, Nat & Med Sci Res Ctr, Nizwa 616, Oman; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Agr & Life Sci, Sch Appl Biosci, Div Plant Biosci, 80 Dahak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Univ Houston, Dept Engn Technol, Sugar Land, TX 77479 USA | ; Khan, Abdul/H-5910-2011; Imran, Muhammad/AFL-6590-2022; Asaf, Sajjad/ABA-3647-2021; Ul-Hamid, Anwar/B-7297-2015; Lee, In-Jung/GLS-0432-2022 | 57886884600; 57031617400; 56595059900; 57885727700; 58282433800; 26639372800; 7801308442; 16425830900; 6506093146 | saqib@unizwa.edm.om;alkhan@central.uh.edu;aharrasi@unizwa.edu.om;saqib@unizwa.edu.om; | PLANTS-BASEL | 2223-7747 | 11 | 17 | 1.83 | 2025-06-25 | 13 | 15 | date palm; antioxidants system; silicon; arsenic toxicity; organic acids; ABA; SA | REDUCES LIPID-PEROXIDATION; ORYZA-SATIVA L.; OXIDATIVE STRESS; MEDIATED ALLEVIATION; ANTIOXIDANT SYSTEM; CADMIUM TOXICITY; SALICYLIC-ACID; RICE; ACCUMULATION; PLANTS | ABA; antioxidants system; arsenic toxicity; date palm; organic acids; SA; silicon | English | 2022 | 2022-09 | 10.3390/plants11172263 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||||||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Simulation of an Indoor Visible Light Communication System Using Optisystem | Visible light communication (VLC ) is an emerging research area in wireless communication. The system works the same way as optical fiber-based communication systems. However, the VLC system uses free space as its transmission medium. The invention of the light-emitting diode (LED) significantly updated the technologies used in modern communication systems. In VLC, the LED acts as a transmitter and sends data in the form of light when the receiver is in the line of sight (LOS) condition. The VLC system sends data by blinking the light at high speed, which is challenging to identify by human eyes. The detector receives the flashlight at high speed and decodes the transmitted data. One significant advantage of the VLC system over other communication systems is that it is easy to implement using an LED and a photodiode or phototransistor. The system is economical, compact, inexpensive, small, low power, prevents radio interference, and eliminates the need for broadcast rights and buried cables. In this paper, we investigate the performance of an indoor VLC system using Optisystem simulation software. We simulated an indoor VLC system using LOS and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation models. Our simulation analyzes the LOS propagation model by considering the direct path with a single LED as a transmitter. The NLOS propagation model-based VLC system analyses two scenarios by considering single and dual LEDs as its transmitter. The effect of incident and irradiance angles in an LOS propagation model and an eye diagram of LOS/NLOS models are investigated to identify the signal distortion. We also analyzed the impact of the field of view (FOV) of an NLOS propagation model using a single LED as a transmitter and estimated the bitrate (Rb). Our theoretical results show that the system simulated in this paper achieved bitrates in the range of 2.1208x107 to 4.2147x107 bits/s when the FOV changes from 30 circle to 90 circle. A VLC hardware design is further considered for real-time implementations. Our VLC hardware system achieved an average of 70% data recovery rate in the LOS propagation model and a 40% data recovery rate in the NLOS propagation model. This paper's analysis shows that our simulated VLC results are technically beneficial in real-world VLC systems. | Poulose, Alwin | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Ctr ICT & Automot Convergence, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | POULOSE, ALWIN/S-4914-2018; , ALWIN POULOSE/S-4914-2018 | 57205504085 | alwinpoulosepalatty@knu.ac.kr; | SIGNALS | 2624-6120 | 3 | 4 | 1.41 | 2025-06-25 | 6 | 13 | visible light communication (VLC); light-emitting diode (LED); optical communications; optisystem | light-emitting diode (LED); optical communications; optisystem; visible light communication (VLC) | English | 2022 | 2022-12 | 10.3390/signals3040046 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||||||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Sirtinol Supresses Trophozoites Proliferation and Encystation of Acanthamoeba via Inhibition of Sirtuin Family Protein | The encystation of Acanthamoeba leads to the development of metabolically inactive and dormant cysts from vegetative trophozoites under unfavorable conditions. These cysts are highly resistant to anti-Acanthamoeba drugs and biocides. Therefore, the inhibition of encystation would be more effective in treating Acanthamoeba infection. In our previous study, a sirtuin family protein-Acanthamoeba silent-information regulator 2-like protein (AcSir2)-was identified, and its expression was discovered to be critical for Acanthamoeba castellanii proliferation and encystation. In this study, to develop Acanthamoeba sirtuin inhibitors, we examine the effects of sirtinol, a sirtuin inhibitor, on trophozoite growth and encystation. Sirtinol inhibited A. castellanii trophozoites proliferation (IC50= 61.24 mu M). The encystation rate of cells treated with sirtinol significantly decreased to 39.8% (200 mu M sirtinol) after 24 hr of incubation compared to controls. In AcSir2-overexpressing cells, the transcriptional level of cyst-specific cysteine protease (CSCP), an Acanthamoeba cysteine protease involved in the encysting process, was 11.6- and 88.6-fold higher at 48 and 72 hr after induction of encystation compared to control. However, sirtinol suppresses CSCP transcription, resulting that the undegraded organelles and large molecules remained in sirtinol-treated cells during encystation. These results indicated that sirtinol sufficiently inhibited trophozoite proliferation and encystation, and can be used to treat Acanthamoeba infections. | Joo, So-Young; Aung, Ja Moon; Shin, Minsang; Moon, Eun-Kyung; Kong, Hyun-Hee; Goo, Youn-Kyoung; Chung, Dong-Il; Hong, Yeonchul | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Parasitol & Trop Med, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Microbiol, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Kyung Hee Univ, Dept Med Zool, Sch Med, Seoul 02447, South Korea; Dong A Univ, Dept Parasitol, Coll Med, Busan 49201, South Korea | 7101656622; 57218245601; 7401536650; 8386023500; 7201352996; 22937863200; 13310373300; 7403392847 | ychong@knu.ac.kr; | KOREAN JOURNAL OF PARASITOLOGY | 0023-4001 | 1738-0006 | 60 | 1 | 0.69 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 7 | Acanthamoeba; encystation; sirtuin family proteins; sirtinol | CASTELLANII; AUTOPHAGY; CELLULOSE; PATHWAY; DISEASE; GENE; SIR2 | Acanthamoeba; Encystation; Sirtinol; Sirtuin family proteins | Acanthamoeba castellanii; Animals; Benzamides; Cell Proliferation; Naphthols; Sirtuins; Trophozoites; antiamebic agent; cyst specific cysteine protease; cysteine proteinase; salermide; silent information regulator 2 like protein; sirtinol; sirtuin; unclassified drug; benzamide derivative; naphthol derivative; sirtinol; sirtuin; Acanthamoeba; Acanthamoeba castellanii; antiproliferative activity; Article; concentration response; controlled study; growth inhibition; IC50; nonhuman; parasite encystment; trophozoite; Acanthamoeba castellanii; animal; cell proliferation; genetics; metabolism; trophozoite | English | 2022 | 2022-02 | 10.3347/kjp.2022.60.1.1 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||||||

The irrigation system is the most important element in agricultural process. There are various research on automation of irrigation system. Most of research have the disadvantage that administrator need to intervene to irrigate. In this work, we propose a smart irrigation system that can monitor agricultural environment and can decide irrigation period and irrigation time. Also, we design machine learning models base on time series data such as CNN, Simple RNN, LSTM to classified soil texture. Performance of the classification algorithm was evaluated using the confusion matrix, the classification performance was evaluated about 90%. In order to implement tiny machine learning on an embedded system in future work., we will consider Simple RNN that has the fewest parameters of them. © 2022, Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences.
