Article Effects of Causonis japonica (Thunb.) Raf. extract on LPS-induced inflammation in RAW264.7 macrophages, via the NF-kB signaling pathway We evaluated the anti-inflammatory effects of Causonis japonica (Thunb.) Raf. extract (CJE) in mouse RAW264.7 macrophage cells. The CJE significantly suppressed lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)/nitric oxide (NO) production. It also suppressed LPS-induced phosphorylation of IkB kinase (IKK), p65, the translocation of p65 from the cytosol to the nucleus, and the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). Overall, our results suggested that the CJE suppresses LPS-induced inflammatory responses by regulating the NF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. © 2022 Korean Society of Food Science and Technology. Article Effects of Chain Affiliation in the Movie Theater Industry In this paper, I empirically study the effect of chain affiliation on product variety and price in the movie theater industry. Using longitudinal data on Korean movie theaters, I find that movie variety in a theater increases by 3.2-5.5% after the theater joins a chain. Admission price, however, does not change after chain affiliation. These findings imply that consumers may benefit from the growing dominance of chain-affiliated theaters in recent decades. The results also suggest that the regulatory authorities should carefully examine the trade-off between the increase in market power and efficiency gains when evaluating the implications of chain affiliation. Article Effects of Cow Milk-Derived Extracellular Vesicles on the Differentiation and Mineralization of Osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 Cells Osteoporosis, which is caused by the structural weakness of bone tissue, is a systemic skeletal disease that decreases bone mass and increases the risk of fractures. For the aging population, osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity and health expenditure. The objective of the present study was to investigate the potential anti-osteoporotic properties of cow milk-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) on the differentiation and mineralization in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured in 0, 1, 5, and 10 μg/mL cow milk-derived EVs for 3 and 7 days. It was observed that the average diameter of EVs from cow milk isolated by ultracentrifugation was 156±2.5 nm, and the presence of EV-associated marker protein CD63 and whey protein-specific marker lactoferrin was confirmed by immunoblot analysis. Our results determined that cow milk-derived EVs were increased osteoblastic cell proliferation and extracellular alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. Markedly, cow milk-derived EVs were significantly elevated the mineralized nodules in a does dependent manner for 3 and 7 days. Taken together, our results clearly demonstrated that cow milk-derived EVs may be useful in preventing osteoporosis by stimulating osteoblastic differentiation and mineralization. © 2022 The Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition. Article Effects of gibberellin pastes on fruit quality attributes and storability of niitaka pear This study evaluated the effects of four different gibberellin-pastes (GAP) on fruit quality and storability of niitaka pear in 2014 and 2015 consecutive years. Pear fruit stalks were treated with dongbu GA gold, nebaekeo, busa, and GA hyeophwa-pastes at 35 and 37 days after full bloom, respectively. After harvest time, the fruits were stored at 0℃ for up to 180 days. In both years, fruit weight was 6.2-21.3% higher in GAP-treated fruits than the control fruits at harvest. In 2014 year, flesh firmness was higher in control (70.6 N) than the GAP-treated fruits (54.4-64.6 N) at harvest, but it was not different in all treatments in 2015 year. The titratable acidity (TA) at harvest was also higher in control than the GAP treated fruits in 2014 year. The soluble solids content (SSC) at harvest was slightly lower in control than the GAP treated fruits in both years. During cold storage, flesh firmness was decreased in all treatments, whereas the fruits treated with nebaekeo GAP had the lowest flesh firmness (39.4 N) after 135 days of the storage. TA was a slightly higher in control (0.19%) than the GAP-treated fruits (0.14-0.17%) after 180 days of storage. However, SSC was higher in the fruits treated with dongbu GA gold and GA hyeophwa-pastes than the control fruits during storage. Therefore, GAP-treatments increased fruit weight and SSC than control, but flesh firmness and TA of GAP-treated fruits were reduced after 180 days of the storage. Review Effects of outdoor air pollution on children with allergic rhinitis The global worsening of air pollution has decreased the quality of life. Air pollutants can induce oxidative stress, epigenetic changes, and alterations to microRNA expression in the airway and skin, leading to immune dysregulation. Previous epidemiological studies suggest a strong association between outdoor environmental pollution and childhood allergic disease, especially allergic rhinitis (AR). Moreover, traffic-related air pollution has increased the severity and incidence of AR, and heavy traffic has been associated with an increased prevalence of AR. Thus, this review aimed to define outdoor environmental pollution and clarify the mechanisms by which air pollutants aggravate AR. In addition, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the findings of several domestic and international epidemiological and clinical studies about the effects of air pollution on AR in children. Article Effects of Sangju Honey on Oral Squamous Carcinoma Cells Since ancient times, honey has been used in traditional medicine owing to its pharmacological effects. It possesses anticancer properties. However, the therapeutic implications of Sangju honey in cancer remains unknown. Therefore, we aimed to demon-strate the potential anticancer effects of Sangju honey on human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), particularly focusing on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and apoptotic and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways. Ca9-22 and YD-10B human OSCC cells were treated with 0.25% or 0.5% Sangju honey, and the cell viability was examined using the Cell Counting Kit-8 assay. Cell morphology studies were conducted to observe morphological changes, and the wound-healing assay was performed to evaluate the proliferation of honey-treated OSCC cells. Western blot analysis was conducted to investi-gate protein expression related to EMT and apoptotic and MAPK signaling pathways. Sangju honey reduced cell viability, induced morphological changes, and significantly suppressed the proliferation and migration of Ca9-22 and YD-10B cells. The expression of E-cadherin and N-cadherin was increased and decreased, respectively, in both OSCC cell lines. Moreover, Sangju honey stim-ulated apoptosis by increasing the expression of p21, p53, cleaved caspase 3, and caspase 9. Furthermore, it downregulated the expression of phospho (p)-extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2, p-c-Jun amino-terminal kinase, and p-p38 in Ca9-22 and YD-10B cells. Sangju honey inhibits Ca9-22 and YD-10B cell proliferation by regulating EMT, inducing apoptosis, and suppressing the MAPK signaling pathway. Thus, it is a potential anticancer agent for human OSCC. Article Effects of the Subgrid-Scale Orography Parameterization and High-Resolution Surface Data on the Simulated Wind Fields in the WRF Model under the Different Synoptic-Scale Environment This study evaluates the simulated meteorological fields with a particular focus on the low-level wind, which plays an important role in air pollutants dispersion, under the varying synoptic environment. Additionally, the effects of subgrid-scale orography parameterization and improved topography/land-use data on the simulated low-level wind is investigated. The WRF model version 4.1.3 is utilized to simulate two cases that were affected by different synoptic environments. One case from 2 to 6 April 2012 presents the substantial low-level wind speed over the Korean peninsula where the synoptic environment is characterized by the baroclinic instability. The other case from 14 to 18 April 2012 presents the relatively weak low-level wind speed and distinct diurnal cycle of low-level meteorological fields. The control simulations of both cases represent the systematic overestimation of the low-level wind speed. The positive bias for the case under the baroclinic instability is considerably alleviated by applying the subgrid-scale orography parameterization. However, the improvement of wind speed for the other case showing relatively weak low-level wind speed is not significant. Applying the high-resolution topography and land-use data also improves the simulated wind speed by reducing the positive bias. Our analysis shows that the increased roughness length in the high-resolution topography and land-use data is the key contributor that reduces the simulated wind speed. The simulated wind direction is also improved with the high-resolution data for both cases. Overall, our study indicates that wind forecasts can be improved through the application of the subgridscale orography parameterization and high-resolution topography/land-use data. Review Efficacy of a Restrictive Diet in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-analysis Background/Aims: Dietary factors can aggravate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Many IBS patients try restrictive diets to relieve their symptoms, but the types of diets with an exacerbating factor are unknown. Therefore, this paper reports the results of a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) reviewing the efficacy of food restriction diets in IBS. Methods: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Clinicaltrials.gov databases were searched until July 21, 2021, to retrieve RCTs assessing the efficacy of restriction diets in adults with IBS. Two independent reviewers performed the eligibility assessment and data abstraction. RCTs that evaluated a restriction diet versus a control diet and assessed the improvement in global IBS symptoms were included. These trials reported a dichotomous assessment of the overall response to therapy. Results: A total of 1,949 citations were identified. After full-text screening, 14 RCTs were considered eligible for the systematic review and network meta-analysis. A starch- and sucrose-reduced diet and a diet with low-fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAPs) showed significantly better results than a usual diet. Symptom flare-ups in patients on a gluten-free diet were also significantly lower than in those on high-gluten diets. Conclusions: These findings showed that the starch- and sucrose-reduced, low FODMAP, and gluten-free diets had superior effects in reducing IBS symptoms. Further studies, including head-to-head trials will be needed to establish the effectiveness of dietary restrictions on IBS symptoms. Article Elderly People Activity Recognition in Smart Grid Monitoring Environment Elderly people activity recognition has become a vital necessity in many countries, because most of the elderly people live alone and are vulnerable. Thus, more research to advance in the monitoring systems used to recognize the activities of elderly people is required. Many researchers have proposed different monitoring systems for activity recognition using wired and wireless wearable sensing devices. However, the activity classification accuracy achieved so far should be improved to meet the challenges of more precise activity monitoring. Our study proposes a smart Human Activity Recognition system architecture utilizing an open source dataset generated by wireless, batteryless sensors used by 14 healthy aged persons and unsupervised and supervised machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we also propose using a smart grid for checking regularly the wearable sensing device operational status to address the well-known reliability challenges of these devices, such as wireless charging and data trustworthiness. As the data from the sensing device is very noisy, we employ the K-means++ clustering to identify outliers and use advanced ensemble classification techniques, such as the stacking classifier for which a meta model built using the random forest algorithm gave better results than all other base models considered. We also employ a bagging classifier, which is an ensemble meta-estimator fitting the prediction outputs of the base classifiers and aggregating them to produce the ensemble output. The best classification accuracy of 99.81 was achieved by the stacking classifier in training and 99.78% in testing, respectively. Comparisons for finding the best model were conducted using the recall, F1 score, and precision values. Article Electric Vehicle Usage Pattern Analysis Using Nonnegative Matrix Factorization in Renewable EV-Smart Charging Grid Environment The global utilization of electric vehicles (EVs) is exponentially increasing due to the increased availability of cost-efficient EVs and infrastructure managements for the EVs. In spite of the increasing usage of EVs, the problem of EV usage patterns' analysis and implementing sustainable infrastructure for the EV transportation is still under development. In addition to this, there is a challenging problem oflong waiting hours in traffic signals. This study deals with these problems by proposing an architecture that includes EV usage pattern analysis using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) technique and renewable solar-powered wireless smart charging grid to effectively utilize or mitigate the long traffic signal waiting hours. The insights from the EV usage patterns are analyzed and presented showing the importance of usage pattern analysis alongside to the presented architecture of renewable solar-powered wireless EV-smart charging grid. These implementations improvise the usage of the EVs and enhancing the transportation experience, which in turn leads to the development of sustainable smart transportation. Article Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Reaction over Cu Nanoparticles with Tunable Activity and Selectivity Mediated by Functional Groups in Polymeric Binder The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) using copper (Cu)-based catalysts has received significant attention mainly because Cu is an element capable of producing hydrocarbons and oxygenates. One possible way to control the CO2RR performance at the electrode interface is by modifying catalysts with specific functional groups of different polymeric binders, which are necessary components in the process of electrode fabrication. However, the modification effect of the key functional groups on the CO2RR activity and selectivity is poorly understood over Cu-based catalysts. In this work, the role of functional groups (e.g., -COOH and -CF2 groups) in hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymeric binders on the CO2RR of Cu-based catalysts is investigated using a combination of electrochemical measurements, in situ characterization, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT results reveal that functional groups influence the binding energies of key intermediates involved in both CO2RR and the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, consistent with experimental observation of binder-dependent product distributions among formic acid, CO, CH4, and H-2. Book chapter Electrochemical membrane technology for fouling control Electrochemical membrane technology, which incorporates electrical and electrochemical reactions into membrane filtration, opens up a new horizon in membranes and membrane processes. Novel electroconductive materials and more efficient process designs are of great interest to make this technology viable in the real field. Regular membranes are utilized for a two-stage serial process setup as long as they are resistant to the residual electrogenerated oxidants. In a single-stage process, ceramic and chemically stable polymeric membranes can be employed. Electroconductive membranes, which act as an electrode and a filter medium, make incremental progress toward the goal of the fabrication of fouling-free and multifunctional filters. Electrochemical membrane filtration mitigates membrane fouling via several phenomena, such as electrophoresis, electrocoagulation, electroflotation, and electrooxidation. Electrophoresis forces the charged particles to move away from the membrane surface having the same charge, reducing membrane fouling caused by particulate deposition. Electrocoagulation generates in situ coagulants (metal ions) aggregating fine particles, reducing pore plugging, and forming loose cake structures at the membrane. Electroflotation generates gas bubbles (H2 and O2) to make the particulate matter buoyant being removed from the aqueous phase. Electrooxidation degrades organic matter and inactivates microorganisms via direct and indirect oxidation reactions, minimizing organic fouling and biofouling. Some challenges remain to be resolved in future research, such as material durability, process intensification with physicochemical or biological treatments, and economic practicality. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. Proceedings Paper Encoded Image-Based Time Series Classification for Improving Colorimetric Detection of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) In this study, a time series data analysis technique using a convolutional neural network (CNN), that performs multidimensional image encoding, is used to improve the accuracy of hydrogen sulfide gas detection. According to a recent study, the time -series data image-encoding technique is effective under specific conditions. The novelty of this study lies in the use of a time-series-based colorimetric analysis method developed using colorimetric fabric detection data from sensors to estimate hydrogen sulfide gas exposure levels. Time series data obtained through gas experiments are imageencoded to classify the color value change trend of a dyed fabric induced by its chemical reaction with hydrogen sulfide gas. The results show that learning using encoded image training data improves model performance in estimating gas exposure levels compared to the non-encoded image method.
