| ○ | ○ | Article | Self-supervised learning with randomised layers for remote sensing | This letter presents a new self-supervised learning approach based on randomised layers for remote sensing. Our method is basically based on the Tile2Vec approach, which is one of the state-of-the-art self-supervised learning approaches for remote sensing. Unlike the original Tile2Vec algorithm, we reformulate the triplet loss as a classification loss. We use several fully connected layers with binary cross-entropy loss instead of no fully connected layers with triplet loss of the original Tile2Vec. We observe that not updating the fully connected layers is more helpful in obtaining more robust representations. The proposed algorithm is verified and evaluated by applying it to a cropland data layer classification task. The experimental results show that our approach is superior to the original Tile2Vec approach in all experiments based on random forest, logistic regression, and multi-layer classifiers. | Jung, Heechul; Jeon, Taegyun | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Artificial Intelligence, Daegu, South Korea; SIA, Daejeon, South Korea | Jung, Heechul/HTL-7199-2023 | 55652175200; 57205114316 | heechul@knu.ac.kr; | ELECTRONICS LETTERS | ELECTRON LETT | 0013-5194 | 1350-911X | 57 | 6 | SCIE | ENGINEERING, ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONIC | 2021 | 1.202 | 84.2 | 0.28 | 2025-07-30 | 5 | 5 | Combinatorial mathematics; Computer vision and image processing techniques; Image recognition; Instrumentation and techniques for geophysical, hydrospheric and lower atmosphere research; Other learning models (inc. | ○ | ○ | Article | An Endophytic Fungus Gliocladium cibotii Regulates Metabolic and Antioxidant System of Glycine max and Helianthus annuus under Heat Stress | In the present study, we have isolated endophytic fungi Gliocladium cibotii from Verbena officinalis L. and tested against Oryza sativa L. seedlings for growth promotion. The strain was used to help Glycine max L. and Helianthus annuus L. under thermal stress. Association of G. cibotii with G. max and H. annuus enhanced chlorophyll contents, total biomass and plant height. Also, G. cibotii significantly curtailed lipids peroxidation and ROS (reactive oxygen species) in host species exposed to heat stress (40 degrees C). Furthermore, the concentration of ROS-degrading enzymes, like ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were boosted in test crops, while concentration of proline and ABA were inhibited. The phenolics and nutritional value (total lipids, proteins and sugars) of experimental plants were also enhanced. The results conclude that G. cibotii can be used as a heat stress mitigating weapon for food crops in the future. | Ismail; Hamayun, Muhammad; Hussain, Anwar; Iqbal, Amjad; Khan, Sumera Afzal; Khan, Muhammad Aaqil; Lee, In-Jung | Abdul Wali Khan Univ Mardan, Dept Bot, Mardan, Pakistan; Abdul Wali Khan Univ Mardan, Dept Food Sci & Technol, Mardan, Pakistan; Univ Peshawar, Ctr Biotechnol & Microbiol, Peshawar, Pakistan; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Appl Biosci, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Lee, In-Jung/GLS-0432-2022; Hussain, Anwar/N-1605-2019; Khan, Shuhab/C-6839-2008; Iqbal, Amjad/E-2010-2014; Hamayun, Muhammad/B-1694-2010; Khan, Muhammad/ABB-9797-2021 | 57205183198; 59297330100; 35621772200; 10142205100; 9636646900; 57188585606; 16425830900 | hamayun@awkum.edu.pk;ijlee@knu.ac.kr; | POLISH JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES | POL J ENVIRON STUD | 1230-1485 | 2083-5906 | 30 | 2 | SCIE | ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES | 2021 | 1.871 | 84.4 | 1.07 | 2025-07-30 | 13 | 25 | antioxidants; endophytic fungi; G. cibotii; heat stress; ROS | Antioxidants; Endophytic fungi; G. cibotii; Heat stress; ROS | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.15244/pjoes/125770 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Penicillium Glabrum Acted as a Heat Stress Relieving Endophyte in Soybean and Sunflower | High temperature is one of the compelling ecological stresses faced by the plants owing to anthropogenic activities of mankind. Recently, endophytic fungi are considered to be a novel tool to counteract the consequences of thermal stress in crops. Owing to the problem, we isolated fungal endophytes from Dryopteris blanfordii and their growth favoring potential in rice seedlings. Endophytic fungi have the proficiency to secrete plant growth stimulating secondary metabolites that help the host plants to restore growth under harsh environments. The isolated Penicillium glabrum (DryR30) helped the host plant species, i.e. Glycine max L. and Helianthus annuus L. under thermal stress. P. glabrum associated with G. max and H. annuus exposed to 40 & ordm;C not only boosted their host growth attributes (total biomass, plant height and chlorophyll contents), but also significantly curtailed the synthesis of reactive oxygen species and lipids peroxidation. Moreover, the abscisic acid (ABA) and proline concentrations were significantly reduced, while the accumulation of ROS-degrading enzymes, such as catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO), glutathione reductase (GR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were increased in P. glabrum-associated crops. Additionally, the protein, lipid and sugar contents in tested plants were also improved. These stirring findings suggest that P. glabrum can be applied to food crops as a thermal stress alleviation tool. | Ismail; Hamayun, Muhammad; Hussain, Anwar; Iqbal, Amjad; Khan, Sumera Afzal; Gul, Sarah; Khan, Hamayoon; Rehman, Khushnood Ur; Bibi, Hamida; Lee, In-Jung | Abdul Wali Khan Univ Mardan, Dept Bot, Mardan, Pakistan; Abdul Wali Khan Univ Mardan, Dept Food Sci Technol, Mardan, Pakistan; Univ Peshawar, Ctr Biotechnol & Microbiol, Peshawar, Pakistan; Int Islamic Univ, Dept Biol Sci, FBAS, Islamabad, Pakistan; Agr Univ Peshawar, Dept Agron, Peshawar, Pakistan; Univ Peshawar, Dept Bot, Islamia Coll, Peshawar, Pakistan; Agr Univ Peshawar, Dept Soil & Environm Sci, Peshawar, Pakistan; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Appl Biosci, Daegu 41566, South Korea | ; Lee, In-Jung/GLS-0432-2022; Iqbal, Amjad/E-2010-2014; Khan, Abdul/H-5910-2011; Hamayun, Muhammad/B-1694-2010; Ur Rehman, Khushnood/AAZ-1451-2021; Hussain, Anwar/N-1605-2019 | 57205183198; 59297330100; 35621772200; 10142205100; 9636646900; 57216951757; 22835075000; 57220007137; 56023955400; 16425830900 | hamayun@awkum.edu.pk;ijlee@knu.ac.kr; | POLISH JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES | POL J ENVIRON STUD | 1230-1485 | 2083-5906 | 30 | 4 | SCIE | ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES | 2021 | 1.871 | 84.4 | 0.76 | 2025-07-30 | 12 | 18 | endophytic fungi; P; glabrum; Dryopteris blanfordii; thermal stress; reactive oxygen species; antioxidants | RAPID-DETERMINATION; HIGH-TEMPERATURE; CAPSICUM-ANNUUM; PLANT-GROWTH; GIBBERELLINS; PROLINE; ACID | Antioxidants; Dryopteris blanfordii; Endophytic fungi; P. glabrum; Reactive oxygen species; Thermal stress | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.15244/pjoes/128579 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Selection of Tolerant and Susceptible Wild Soybean (Glycine sofa Siebold & Zucc.) Accessions under Waterlogging Condition using Vegetation Indices | The waterlogging tolerance and susceptibility of 164 wild soybean accessions were evaluated. All plants were exposed to waterlogging conditions for 14 days, and visual score evaluation and detection of vegetation indices were performed at 14 and 21 days after waterlogging (DAW). According to our results, approximately 90% of the wild soybean accessions showed a visual score of 1.0-3.5 in both measurements. Among the 26 vegetation indices, only 17 showed statistically high correlation with visual score; however, the maximum P-value was less than -0.58. Therefore, correlation tests were re-performed using the selected wild soybean accessions (waterlogging-tolerant and waterlogging susceptible accessions). As a result, significantly high P-values were detected for anthocyanin reflectance index (ARI1) (P = 0.98069 at 14 DAW; P = 0.86734 at 21 DAW), ARI2 (P = 0.98434 at 14 DAW; P = 0.87934 at 21 DAW), photochemical reflectance index (P = -0.9801 at 14 DAW; P = -0.9268 at 21 DAW), and simple ratio pigment index (P = -0.8841 at 14 DAW; P = -0.81292 at 21 DAW). Root morphological traits also showed significant differences between waterlogging tolerant and waterlogging-susceptible accessions. In waterlogging-tolerant accessions, root length was 3.7-5.5-fold higher than that in waterlogging-susceptible accessions. Furthermore, waterlogging-tolerant accessions showed a 14.3%-56.3% increase in projected area compared with in waterlogging-susceptible accessions. | Kim, Se-Hun; Tripathi, Pooja; Yu, Seongmin; Park, Jeong-Min; Lee, Jeong-Dong; Chung, Yong Suk; Chung, Gyuhwa; Kim, Yoonha | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Appl Biosci, Daegu, South Korea; Jeju Natl Univ, Dept Plant Resources & Environm, Jeju, South Korea; Chonnam Natl Univ, Dept Biotechnol, Yeosu, South Korea | Ghimire, Madhav/AAT-3026-2021; Chung, Yong/V-6909-2019 | 57217072245; 57215084745; 57225096753; 9942606600; 40462075100; 36983850100; 23096959100; 57224866763 | kyh1229@knu.ac.kr; | POLISH JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES | POL J ENVIRON STUD | 1230-1485 | 2083-5906 | 30 | 4 | SCIE | ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES | 2021 | 1.871 | 84.4 | 0.15 | 2025-07-30 | 5 | 4 | root morphological traits; vegetation index; waterlogging; WinRHIZO | GENETIC DIVERSITY; DROUGHT; STRESS; CROP; STRATEGIES; MECHANISMS; CULTIVARS | Root morphological traits; Vegetation index; Waterlogging; WinRHIZO | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.15244/pjoes/130491 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Comparative Analysis of Pigment Biosynthesis Gene Expression Related to Enhanced Skin Color in 'Mishima' Apples during Fruit Development | In apple (Malus domestica), red coloration is an attractive trait for consumers. The color of fruit skin is determined by the distribution of carotenoids and anthocyanins in the skin tissue. 'Fuji' apples have red stripes over a yellow-green background, and 'Mishima', a 'Fuji' bud sport variety, has superior coloration compared to its parent. To investigate the genetic mechanism underlying the enhanced pigmentation in 'Mishima' fruit skin, we characterized the expression of pigment biosynthesis genes in 'Fuji' and 'Mishima' apples during fruit development. CIELAB data showed lower L* (relative lightness) and higher a*/b* ratio (relative redness) values in 'Mishima' apples, suggesting increased red pigmentation, which correlated with the levels of pigment biosynthesis gene expression. In 'Mishima', two carotenoid biosynthesis genes (MdZISO and MdLCY-epsilon) were upregulated at many stages of fruit development. Furthermore, enhanced red pigmentation was resulted from higher expression levels of three anthocyanin regulatory (MdMYB10, MdWD40, and MdGST) and three structural (MdCHS, MdCHI, and MdF3'H) genes, suggesting their positive interaction. These data further our understanding of the molecular basis of the enhanced skin color of 'Fuji' apple varieties. | Cho, Hye Jeong; Han, A. | ○ | ○ | Article | Determination of Optimal Growing Degree Days and Cultivars of Kimchi Cabbage for Growth and Yield during Spring Cultivation under Shading Conditions | This study determined the optimal growing degree days (GDD) and cultivars of Kimchi cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis) for growth and yield during spring cultivation under shading condition. There were nine treatments, and the experiments were conducted with three GDD levels (899, 924, and 961) and three cultivars ('Chungwang', 'Cheongna' , and 'Cheongok') under shading conditions. The process-based model of Kimchi cabbage was applied for growth and yield prediction using meteorological data regarding light, temperature, wind, precipitation, and humidity in several regions. The number of leaves of 'Chungwang' Kimchi cabbage was greater than that of 'Cheongna' and 'Choengok' at all planting times. Most of the growth parameters were highest in the delayed transplanting treatment than in the other transplanting times. 'Chungwang' Kimchi cabbage was less sensitive to high temperature during spring cultivation than the other cultivars. GDD 924 was the most optimal time to harvest under the shading condition. GDD 750-870 is considered an appropriate harvest time in the primary production regions during the spring cultivation season. If shading is performed in these regions, constant production may be possible, thus, alleviating damage from high temperature. | Sim, Ha Seon; Jo, Won Jun; Lee, Hye Jin; Moon, Yu Hyun; Wool, Ui Jeong; Jung, Soo Bin; Ahn, Su Ran; Kim, Sung Kyeom | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Agr & Sci, Dept Hort Sci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Int Agr Training Ctr, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Kim, Sung Kyeom/AAD-9230-2019 | 57220890640; 57219474538; 57900161200; 57226272477; 57226269481; 57474949700; 57220895028; 57475751100 | skkim76@knu.ac.kr; | HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | HORTIC SCI TECHNOL | 1226-8763 | 2465-8588 | 39 | 6 | SCIE | HORTICULTURE | 2021 | 0.758 | 84.7 | 1 | 2025-07-30 | 8 | 10 | Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis; forecast; heat stress; prediction; process-based model | CHINESE-CABBAGE | Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis; Forecast; Heat stress; Prediction; Process-based model | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.7235/hort.20210063 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Effect of institutional case volume on mid-term mortality after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery | Objective The impact of center case volume on mid-term postoperative outcome after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) is still controversial and requires investigation. The aim of this study was to compare mid-term survival after CABG according to the institutional annual CABG case volume. Methods Adult patients (>= 18 years) who underwent CABG from 2009 to 2016 were identified by searching National Health Insurance database of Korea for CABG procedure codes. Hospitals were classified into three groups based on annual case volume; low-volume centers ( 50 cases/year). Results A total of 22,575 CABG were performed in 95 centers during the study period, and 14,697 (65.1%) cases performed at 15 high-volume centers, 5,262 (23.3%) cases at 26 medium-volume centers, and 2,616 (11.6%) cases at 54 low-volume centers. The overall 1-year mortality rate was the lowest in high-volume centers (6.5%), followed by medium-volume centers (10.6%) and low-volume centers (15.2%). Logistic regression identified medium-volume centers (adjusted OR 1.30 [95% CI 1.15-1.49], P < 0.01) and low-volume centers (adjusted OR 1.75 [95% CI 1.51-2.03], P < 0.01) as risk factors for 1-year mortality after CABG compared to high-volume centers. In the Cox proportional hazard model, low- and medium-volume centers were significantly risk factors for poor survival (adjusted HR 1.41 [95% CI 1.31-1.54], P < 0.01 and HR 1.26 [95% CI 1.17-1.35], P < 0.01 for low- and medium-volume centers, respectively). Conclusions Higher institutional case volume of CABG was associated with lower mid-term mortality. | Lee, Seohee; Jang, Eun Jin; Jo, Junwoo; Jang, Dongyeon; Kim, Bo Rim; Ryu, Ho Geol | Seoul Natl Univ, Seoul Natl Univ Hosp, Coll Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, 101 Daehak Ro, Seoul 03080, South Korea; Andong Natl Univ, Dept Informat Stat, 1375 Gyeongdong Ro, Andong 36729, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Stat, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Ryu, Ho/J-5463-2012; Kim, Bo Rim/AFQ-3640-2022 | 57199185656; 37861741600; 57210425017; 57221838050; 57189683654; 7202277246 | hogeol@gmail.com; | GENERAL THORACIC AND CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY | GEN THORAC CARDIOVAS | 1863-6705 | 1863-6713 | 69 | 9 | SCIE | CARDIAC & CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEMS;SURGERY | 2021 | 1.227 | 84.7 | 0.58 | 2025-07-30 | 5 | 5 | Case volume; Coronary artery bypass grafting surgery; Mortality | NATIONWIDE RETROSPECTIVE COHORT; DONOR LIVER-TRANSPLANTATION; HOSPITAL VOLUME; OPERATIVE MORTALITY; CARDIAC-SURGERY; OFF-PUMP; OUTCOMES; CANCER; ASSOCIATION; FAILURE | Case volume; Coronary artery bypass grafting surgery; Mortality | Coronary Artery Bypass; Coronary Artery Disease; Hospitals; Humans; Proportional Hazards Models; Retrospective Studies; Risk Factors; Treatment Outcome; adult; article; clinical article; controlled study; coronary artery bypass graft; female; human; Korea; male; mortality rate; national health insurance; risk factor; coronary artery bypass graft; coronary artery disease; hospital; proportional hazards model; retrospective study; treatment outcome | English | 2021 | 2021-09 | 10.1007/s11748-020-01578-x | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |
| ○ | ○ | Article | Epidemiology and risk factors for sports- and recreation-related eye injury: a multicenter prospective observational study | AIM: To identify the epidemiologic characteristics of sports-and recreation-related eye injuries in a large metropolitan city and investigate risk factors associated with visual impairment. METHODS: We performed a multicenter prospective observational study on patients using the regional eye injury registry data. This study included patients with sports-and recreation-related eye injury in four tertiary teaching hospitals in Daegu, Republic of Korea, from August 2016 to July 2018. The primary outcome was visual impairment at the first hospital visit. Distributions of sex, age, place, and causative materials were analyzed according to causative activities. To examine the association between causative activities and visual impairment, a Logistic regression analysis was used. RESULTS: Of the 349 sports- and recreation-related eye injuries, soccer was the most common causative activity, with 21.8% (n=76). Sports- and recreation-related eye injuries occurred mainly in teenagers, individuals in their 20s, and men. Badminton and soccer were significantly associated with visual impairment at the first hospital visit compared with combat sports [(adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 5.18; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.67-16.09 for badminton and AOR, 3.87; 95%CI, 136-10.99 for soccer]. CONCLUSION: Intervention efforts such as deployment of protective eyewear in sports facilities and schools and promotion of wearing protective eyewear during these activities in teenagers and individuals in their 20s are mandatory. | Lee, Dong Eun; Ryoo, Hyun Wook; Moon, Sungbae; Ahn, Jae Yun; Kim, Jung Ho; Kim, Jong-Yeon | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Chilgok Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Emergency Med, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Emergency Med, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Dept Emergency Med, Coll Med, Daegu 42415, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Dept Publ Hlth, Daegu 41944, South Korea | Kim, Jungho/LDE-9088-2024; Kim, Jung Ho/LDE-9088-2024; Ahn, Jae Yun/N-2652-2017; Lee, Dong Eun/HTN-4501-2023 | 57202299238; 55350557500; 57191584601; 56937505400; 57205704177; 58382951500 | ryoo@knu.ac.kr; | INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OPHTHALMOLOGY | INT J OPHTHALMOL-CHI | 2222-3959 | 2227-4898 | 14 | 1 | SCIE | OPHTHALMOLOGY | 2021 | 1.645 | 84.7 | 0.96 | 2025-07-30 | 9 | 11 | epidemiology; eye injury; sports injury; prevention | PREVENTION | Epidemiology; Eye injury; Prevention; Sports injury | English | 2021 | 2021-01-18 | 10.18240/ijo.2021.01.19 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Functional Properties of Newly Bred 'Summer Prince' Apples | Apples are one of the most commonly eaten fruits in the world. Therefore, we studied the functionality of apple, a natural raw material that does not have toxicity or sensitivity problems. In this study, 'Summer Prince' apple cultivar, newly bred in Korea, was selected as a material, and the experiment was conducted by controlling the total phenolic content (TPC) at various concentrations. The experiment was confirmed by measuring TPC, anti-oxidant activity, and physiological-related enzyme inhibition activity. The peel and whole flesh of `Summer Prince' apples were extracted using water and ethanol, and each extract demonstrated relatively high levels of TPC at 6.83 and 11.11 g.kg(-1), and 3.41 and 4.65 g.kg(-1), respectively. In the peel and whole extracts, 60 and 50% ethanol was measured. The anti-oxidant activity was measured in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), anti-oxidant protection factor (PF), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARs) assays. Both 'Summer Prince' peel and whole extract showed significant effects, but DPPH and ABTS, which showed water-soluble anti-oxidant effects, had better effects than positive control. Therefore, 'Summer Prince' apple extracts possess substantial anti-oxidant properties, and physiologicalrelated enzyme inhibition activity was expected. Since inhibitors of enzymes involved in diseases are important factors in terms of drug availability, the 'Summer Prince' peel and whole extracts at 50-200 mu.mL(-1) concentration were used to investigate the inhibitory effect. The expression levels of enzyme inhibitions activities were decreased in a concentration-dependent manner when 'Summer Prince' extracts were treated. These results support the high potential for using these extracts in functional food and cosmetics applications, as the 'Summer Prince' apples were determined to have various anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-wrinkle, and anti-diabetic functions. | Lee, Eun-Ho; Park, Hye-Jin; Kang, In-Kyu; Cho, Young-Je | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Food Sci & Biotechnol, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Hort Sci, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 56347429100; 7601567655; 56577308800; 55265396300 | yjcho@knu.ac.kr; | HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | HORTIC SCI TECHNOL | 1226-8763 | 2465-8588 | 39 | 4 | SCIE | HORTICULTURE | 2021 | 0.758 | 84.7 | 0 | 2025-07-30 | 0 | 0 | anti-diabetic; anti-inflammation; anti-oxidation; anti-wrinkle; phenolic compound; 'Summer Prince' apple | HYALURONIC-ACID; TYROSINASE INHIBITORS; OXIDATIVE STRESS; IDENTIFICATION; EXTRACTS | Additional anti-diabetic; Anti-inflammation; Anti-oxidation; Anti-wrinkle; Phenolic compound; ‘Summer Prince’ apple | Korean | 2021 | 2021 | 10.7235/hort.20210048 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Genetic Mapping of green-stripe in Tomato | Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) has a high level of genetic variation in fruit color, which is an important fruit quality trait considered by breeders and consumers. The fruit stripe color pattern is determined by the green stripe (gs) locus and is observed only in the peel tissue in tomato. Using two different F-2 populations (351 and 97 individuals), we mapped gs to the long arm of chromosome 7 and found that it cosegregated with TOMATO AGAMOUS-LIKE 1 (TAGL1). Association analysis using a TAGL1-specific derived cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences (dCAPS) marker distinguished 118 non-green-striped and 11 green-striped tomato cultivars. The chlorophyll content of green-striped peels (GSPs) was higher than that of light-green peels (LGPs), and the carotenoid content of red peels (RPs) was higher than that of yellow-striped peels (YSPs). Although we did not find sequence variation in the promoter and coding regions of TAGL1 between non-striped and striped tomatoes, TAGL1 expression in the YSPs was lower than that in the RPs. Therefore, the differential expression of TAGL1 may contribute to fruit stripe patterning. Marker-assisted selection using the TAGL1-specific marker identified here will facilitate breeding of fruit stripe patterning in tomato. | Cho, Woon; Kang, Eun Sol; Lee, Je Min | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Hort Sci, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Lee, Je/AAE-7496-2020; Lee, Je Min/F-9797-2014 | 57225040617; 57219454134; 8885729900 | jemin@knu.ac.kr; | HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | HORTIC SCI TECHNOL | 1226-8763 | 2465-8588 | 39 | 3 | SCIE | HORTICULTURE | 2021 | 0.758 | 84.7 | 0 | 2025-07-30 | 0 | 0 | carotenoid; chlorophyll; DNA marker; fruit color; TAGL1 | YELLOW FRUIT; REVEALS; COLOR; RIN; TRANSCRIPT; INSIGHTS; NOR | Carotenoid; Chlorophyll; DNA marker; Fruit color; TAGL1 | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.7235/hort.20210036 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Induction of Polyploidy in Cucumis melo 'Chammel' and Evaluation of Morphological and Cytogenetic Changes | This study explored the effects of oryzalin on the polyploidization of a new cultivar, Cucumis melo 'Chammel'. 58 diploid seedlings of 'Chammel' were treated with oryzalin. Their ploidy levels were checked by flow cytometry and number of 5S and 18S rDNA loci were examined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Twelve among 58 plants were identified as tetraploids. The tetraploids were self-crossed, and their seeds were harvested. The seeds and seedlings of the tetraploids were compared to the corresponding diploids using morphology and cytogenetic analyses. The seed width, the cotyledon width, and the leaf thickness of the tetraploids increased significantly over those of the diploids. However, the length of the petiole of the tetraploids was shorter than that of the corresponding diploids. The stomata length and width of the guard cells in the tetraploids were longer than in diploids, but the number of stomata per area decreased in the tetraploids. The number of chromosomes was 24 and 48 for the diploids and tetraploids, respectively. Moreover, the chromosomal changes induced by oryzalin were confirmed; the diploids had one pair of 5S rDNA loci and two pairs of 18S rDNA loci, the corresponding numbers were doubled in the tetraploids. These results will help to generate new seedless oriental melon cultivars via polyploidization. | Cho, Woo-Young; Deepo, Deen Mohammad; Islam, Md Mazharul; Nam, Si-Chun; Kim, Hong-Yul; Han, Jeung-Sul; Kim, Chang-Kil; Chung, Mi-Young; Lim, Ki-Byung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Hort Sci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Spring Seed Co Ltd, Seongju 40039, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Agr Sci & Technol, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Sunchon Natl Univ, Dept Agr Educ, Sunchon 57922, South Korea | 57219090110; 57216909682; 57224982409; 57209449124; 56941037200; 8277688900; 7409880701; 24821361600; 7403175915 | kblim@knu.ac.kr; | HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | HORTIC SCI TECHNOL | 1226-8763 | 2465-8588 | 39 | 5 | SCIE | HORTICULTURE | 2021 | 0.758 | 84.7 | 0.37 | 2025-07-30 | 4 | 5 | 5S rDNA; 18S rDNA; FISH; oryzalin; tetraploid | KARYOTYPE ANALYSIS; COLCHICINE TREATMENT; PLANT MORPHOLOGY; ORYZALIN; FISH; HYBRIDIZATION; WATERMELON; PLOIDY; RDNA | 18S rDNA; Additional 5S rDNA; FISH; Oryzalin; Tetraploid | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.7235/hort.20210056 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Resistance Evaluation of G, CG, or M Series Apple Rootstocks to Soil-borne Diseases (Phytophthora Root Rot, White Root Rot, and Southern Blight) and Woolly Apple Aphid | In this study, the resistance of the industry-standard M26 and M9 rootstocks and the promising elite G or CG rootstocks was evaluated not only for soil-borne diseases, such as Phytophthora root rot (Phytophthora cactorum), white root rot (Rosellinia necatrix), and southern blight (Athelia rolfsii), but also for woolly apple aphid [Eriosoma lanigerum (Huasm.)]. On February 27, 2019, each unworked rootstock plant was harvested from stool-beds, then planted in 2-L pots and grown in a greenhouse. For P. cactorum, M9 was the most resistant, and CG5087 and G935 were not. There was little difference in susceptibility to R. necatrix among rootstocks, but G or CG rootstocks were generally less susceptible than the M series. The susceptibility to A. rolfsii was higher (p < 0.05) in M series rootstocks than in G or CG series rootstocks, and the mortality reached 80% and 53% for M9 and M26, respectively, and 7% for G935. As a result, M9 and G11 showed resistance to P. cactorum, whereas G or CG rootstocks showed relative resistance to R. necatrix and A. rolfsii. For woolly apple aphid, G11, G202, G214, and CG5087 were immune, but G935, CG4814, M26, and M9 were not. | Choi, Byeong-Ho; Kim, Chung-Sil; Jeong, Young-Ju; Park, In-Hee; Han, Su-Gon; Yoon, Tae-Myung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Hort Sci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Apple Res Inst, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 57212379669; 55840923100; 57222957464; 57217313022; 57199650006; 50263701700 | tmyoon@knu.ac.kr; | HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | HORTIC SCI TECHNOL | 1226-8763 | 2465-8588 | 39 | 2 | SCIE | HORTICULTURE | 2021 | 0.758 | 84.7 | 0.75 | 2025-07-30 | 7 | 7 | colony; Geneva apple rootstock; mycelium; rootstock infection; (s)oil infestation | Colony; Geneva apple rootstock; Mycelium; Rootstock infection; Soil infestation | English | 2021 | 2021 | 10.7235/hort.20210015 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Adhaeribacter terrigena sp. nov., Isolated from Korean Soil | A bacterial strain, designated BT258(T), was isolated from a soil sample collected from Uijeongbu-si, Gyeong-do Province, Republic of Korea. Cells were Gram stain negative, aerobic, rod shaped, motile by gliding, and formed light pink-pigmented colonies on agar plates. Growth of the isolate was observed at 10-37 degrees C and pH 6-7. A 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain BT258(T) is a member of the genus Adhaeribacter in the family Hymenobacteraceae and had the highest sequence similarity with 'Adhaeribacter soli' MA2(T) (97.1%), Adhaeribacter terreus DNG6(T) (96.6%), and Adhaeribacter terrae HY02(T) (96.5%). The predominant respiratory quinone of the isolate was MK-7, the main polar lipid was phosphatidylethanolamine, and the major fatty acids were C-15:0 iso (37.7%), summed feature 4 (C-17:1 anteiso B/iso-C-17:1 I; 16.8%), and C-16:0 (10.3%). The draft genome of strain BT258(T) had a whole length of 4,974,022 bp and DNA G + C content of 46.0 mol%. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between the novel isolate and 'Adhaeribacter soli' and seven other Adhaeribacter species ranged from 17.9 to 22.7% and 69.7 to 77.9%, respectively. On the basis of its phenotypic properties, genotypic distinctiveness, and chemotaxonomic features, strain BT258(T) represents a novel species in the genus Adhaeribacter, for which the name Adhaeribacter terrigena sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BT258(T) (= KCTC 72409( T) = JCM 34303( T)). | Ten, Leonid N.; Li, Weilan; Kim, Myung Kyum; Kang, In-Kyu; Lee, Seung-Yeol; Jung, Hee-Young | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Appl Biosci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Seoul Womens Univ, Dept Bio & Environm Technol, Seoul 01797, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Hort Sci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Plant Med, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Kim, Jung Oh/JDC-5061-2023; Ten, Leonid/P-7941-2014; Lee, Hye Ah/ABC-8131-2021 | 6603039265; 57196248967; 35080583500; 56577308800; 56106499600; 7403029383 | heeyoung@knu.ac.kr; | CURRENT MICROBIOLOGY | CURR MICROBIOL | 0343-8651 | 1432-0991 | 78 | 8 | SCIE | MICROBIOLOGY | 2021 | 2.343 | 85.0 | 0 | 2025-07-30 | 0 | 0 | PROKARYOTIC GENOME ANNOTATION; PROPOSED MINIMAL STANDARDS; TERRAE SP NOV.; SEQUENCES | Bacterial Typing Techniques; Bacteroidetes; DNA, Bacterial; Fatty Acids; Phylogeny; Republic of Korea; RNA, Ribosomal, 16S; Sequence Analysis, DNA; Soil; Soil Microbiology; agar; fatty acid; phosphatidylethanolamine; RNA 16S; bacterial DNA; fatty acid; RNA 16S; Adhaeribacter terrigena; Article; bacterial genome; bacterial growth; bacterium culture; bacterium isolate; bacterium isolation; chemotaxonomy; controlled study; DNA base composition; DNA DNA hybridization; gene sequence; Gram negative bacterium; Gram staining; nonhuman; phylogeny; soil; South Korea; type strain; bacterium identification; Bacteroidetes; DNA sequence; genetics; microbiology; soil | English | 2021 | 2021-08 | 10.1007/s00284-021-02586-7 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | dinF Elicits Nitric Oxide Signaling Induced by Periplanetasin-4 from American Cockroach in Escherichia coli | Modern antibiotics have been developed with the aim of destroying cellular function; however, the risk of antibiotic-resistance is increasing continuously. As a result, antimicrobial peptide (AMP) is considered a novel strategy to substitute traditional drugs. This study focused on revealing the antibacterial mechanism(s) of periplanetasn-4, an AMP identified from Cockroach. To elucidate whether periplanetasin-4 generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), a crucial stress factor for cell death, intracellular ROS was measured in Escherichia coli. The degree of membrane and DNA damage was determined using the properties that ROS causes oxidative stress to cell components. Unlike normal cell death, membrane depolarization was observed but DNA fragmentation did not occur. In addition, accumulation of nitric oxide (NO), a free radical with high toxicity, was measured and the byproduct of NO also induced severe intracellular damage. Periplanetasin-4-induced NO also impacted on cytosol calcium levels and triggered lipid peroxidation and DNA oxidation. These features were weakened when NO synthesis was interrupted, and this data suggested that perplanetasin-4-induced NO participates in E. coli cell damage. Moreover, this AMP-induced NO stimulates expression of SOS repair proteins and activation of RecA, a bacterial caspase-like protein. Features of nitrosative damage did not occur especially without dinF gene which is associated with oxidative stress. Therefore, it was indicated that when there is a NO signal, dinF promotes cell death. In conclusion, the combined investigations demonstrated that the antibacterial mechanism(s) of periplanetasin-4 was a NO-induced cell death, and dinF gene is closely related to cell death pathway. | Lee, Heejeong; Hwang, Jae Sam; Lee, Dong Gun | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Life Sci, BK21 FOUR KNU Creat BioRes Grp, Daegu 41566, South Korea; RDA, Dept Agr Biol, Natl Acad Agr Sci, Wonju, South Korea | Lee, Dong-Gun/IWD-9833-2023 | 56010549700; 16637012100; 55668060900 | dglee222@knu.ac.kr; | CURRENT MICROBIOLOGY | CURR MICROBIOL | 0343-8651 | 1432-0991 | 78 | 9 | SCIE | MICROBIOLOGY | 2021 | 2.343 | 85.0 | 0.42 | 2025-07-30 | 5 | 5 | APOPTOSIS-LIKE DEATH; DNA-DAMAGE; PEPTIDE; MEMBRANE; RESISTANCE; MECHANISMS; SYNTHASES; TARGETS; SYSTEM | Animals; Antimicrobial Cationic Peptides; Escherichia coli; Nitric Oxide; Periplaneta; Reactive Oxygen Species; bactericide; calcium; caspase; dinF protein; hydrogen peroxide; hydroxyl radical; malonaldehyde; natural product; nitric oxide; periplanetasn 4; polypeptide antibiotic agent; protein; reactive oxygen metabolite; RecA protein; superoxide dismutase; unclassified drug; antimicrobial cationic peptide; nitric oxide; periplanetasin-4; reactive oxygen metabolite; antibacterial activity; antibiotic sensitivity; Article; bacterial cell; bacterial membrane; bacterial strain; cell component; cell death; cell function; controlled study; cytosol; DNA damage; DNA fragmentation; Enterococcus faecalis; Enterococcus faecium; Escherichia coli; genomic instability; lipid peroxidation; membrane depolarization; minimum inhibitory concentration; nonhuman; oxidative stress; Periplaneta americana; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis; Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium; signal transduction; sos response (genetics); Staphylococcus aureus; Staphylococcus epidermidis; animal; Periplaneta | English | 2021 | 2021-09 | 10.1007/s00284-021-02615-5 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
