Article Genetic variants in histone modification regions predicts clinical outcomes of pemetrexed chemotherapy in lung adenocarcinoma Objective This study was conducted to investigate the association between genetic variants in histone modification regions and clinical outcomes of PEM chemotherapy in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Methods Potentially functional SNPs were selected using integrated analysis of ChIP-seq and RNA-seq. The associations of 279 SNPs with chemotherapy response and overall survival (OS) were analyzed in 314 lung adenocarcinoma patients who underwent PEM chemotherapy. Results Among the SNPs investigated, 18 were significantly associated with response to chemotherapy, while 28 with OS. Of these SNPs, rs549794A>G in an enhancer which is expected to regulate the expression of ribosomal protein S3 (RPS3) gene was significantly associated with both worse response to chemotherapy and worse OS (adjusted odds ration [aOR] = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.36-0.97, P = 0.04; adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.09-1.91, P = 0.01, respectively). Previous studies suggested that RPS3, a multi-functional protein with various extraribosomal activities, may play a role in chemotherapy resistance. Therefore, it is postulated that rs549794-induced change in the expression level of RPS3 may affect the response to PEM chemotherapy and consequently the survival outcomes in lung adenocarcinoma patients. Conclusion This study suggests that genetic variants in the histone modification regions may be useful for the prediction of clinical outcomes of PEM chemotherapy in advanced lung adenocarcinoma. Article Infundibular Widening of Angiographically Invisible Duplicate Anterior Choroidal Artery Mimicking Typical Anterior Choroidal Artery Aneurysm A diagnosis of an intracranial aneurysm depends on the angiographic configuration and should be cautiously differentiated from aneurysm mimics. In cases of duplicate anterior choroidal arteries (AChAs), infundibular widening of the distal minor AChA can be an aneurysm mimic. If the minor AChA with a smaller diameter is obscured angiographically due to poor contrast filling, an associated infundibular widening beside the proximal large AChA can misinterpreted as a typical AChA aneurysm in angiograms. The authors report on two such cases of duplicate AChAs with infundibular widening presenting like a typical AChA aneurysm in angiograms. Surgical exploration revealed a perforating artery emitting from the dome of the saccular lesion, confirming infundibular widening of a duplicate AChA. No reparative procedure was applied to the infundibular widening in a 48-year-old man, while two vascular outpouchings from the infundibular widening were clipped preserving the duplicate AChA in a 55-year-old woman. Article Prospective, Multicenter Study of Rotational Atherectomy with Antirestenotic Therapy for Infrainguinal Arterial Disease Background: Thrombi are common in steno-occlusive lesions of infrainguinal atherosclerotic diseases. Despite the easy passage of guidewires through these lesions, conventional ballooning or stenting cannot effectively treat them, and patients are at risk of distal embolization. This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes of using a rotational aspiration atherectomy system to treat infrainguinal atherosclerotic disease. Methods: Patients underwent revascularization of target lesions using the JetstreamTM Atherectomy System. The primary endpoint was the freedom from clinically driven target lesion revascularization (CD-TLR) 12-month after the procedure. Outcomes were evaluated according to the clinical severity, lesion type, use of drug-coated balloons (DCBs), and lesion length, characteristics, and sites. Survival analysis for CD-TLR over time was plotted. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 22 (IBM; Armonk, NY, USA). P-values <0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: In total, 150 patients (91.2% male; mean age, 69.8 years; 66.2% with diabetes) with de novo or restenotic infrainguinal lesions were enrolled. The mean lesion length was 17.2 cm, 75.0% were occlusive, and 38.2% had severe calcification. The lesion types were sclerotic (64.7%), thrombosclerotic (20.6%), thrombotic (8.8%), and in-stent (5.9%). Adjunctive DCB was used in 86.8% of patients. The 12-month primary patency rate (PPR) and CD-TLR rates were 81.6% and 90.1%, respectively. The 12-month CD-TLR rate was significantly better in the sclerotic and thrombosclerotic groups than in the thrombotic group (100% and 100% vs. 66.7%; P = 0.001). The 12-month PPR was significant better in TransAtlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) A and B groups than TASC C and D groups (P = 0.02). The 12-month PPR is significantly better after using a DCB or stent placement than after using a simple balloon (P = 0.01). There were no major adverse events, including procedure-related death, myocardial infarction, or major amputation. Article Quantum Renyi-2 entropy power inequalities for bosonic Gaussian operations We derive quantum Renyi-2 entropy power inequalities for Gaussian operations of the beam-splitting and squeez-ing type. We first show that known quantum von Neumann entropy power inequalities generalize straightforwardly to quantum Renyi-2 entropy power inequalities for Gaussian states but fail to do so for non-Gaussian states. We then derive quantum Renyi-2 entropy power inequalities that provide lower bounds for the Gaussian operations for any state. The inequality for the squeezing operation is shown to have applications in the generation and detec-tion of quantum entanglement.& COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement Shin, Woochang; Noh, Changsuk; Park, Jiyong Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Phys, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Hanbat Natl Univ, Sch Basic Sci, Daejeon 34158, South Korea Park, Jiyong/G-1011-2010 58511319800; 23991025500; 55716975600 cnoh@knu.ac.kr;jiyong.park@hanbat.ac.kr; JOURNAL OF THE OPTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA B-OPTICAL PHYSICS J OPT SOC AM B 0740-3224 1520-8540 40 8 SCIE OPTICS 2023 1.8 56.7 0 2025-06-25 0 0 ENTANGLEMENT; INFORMATION Entropy; Gaussian distribution; Beam splitting; Entropy power inequalities; Gaussian operations; Gaussian state; Low bound; Non-Gaussian state; Quantum entanglement English 2023 2023-08-01 10.1364/josab.490264 바로가기 바로가기 바로가기 바로가기
Article Tat-Thioredoxin-like protein 1 attenuates ischemic brain injury by regulation of MAPKs and apoptosis signaling Thioredoxin-like protein 1 (TXNL1), one of the thioredoxin su-perfamily known as redox-regulator, plays an essential in main-taining cell survival via various antioxidant and anti-apoptotic mechanisms. It is well known that relationship between ischemia and oxidative stress, however, the role of TXNL1 protein in ischemic damage has not been fully investigated. In the present study, we aimed to determine the protective role of TXNL1 against on ischemic injury in vitro and in vivo using cell permeable Tat-TXNL1 fusion protein. Transduced Tat-TXNL1 inhibited ROS production and cell death in H2O2-exposed hippocampal neuronal (HT-22) cells and modulated MAPKs and Akt activation, and pro-apoptotic protein expression levels in the cells. In an ischemia animal model, Tat-TXNL1 mark-edly decreased hippocampal neuronal cell death and the acti-vation of astrocytes and microglia. These findings indicate that cell permeable Tat-TXNL1 protects against oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo ischemic animal model. Therefore, we sug-gest Tat-TXNL1 can be a potential therapeutic protein for ische-mic injury. Article Scarce fashion products consumption in the C2C second-hand trading platform Utilizing self-licensing theory, this study aimed to identify the psychological mechanism of the consumption of scarce fashion products on customer-to-customer (C2C) second-hand online trading platforms. This research used a 2 (scarcity level: high vs. low) x 2 (consumers' environmental consciousness: high vs. low) mixed factorial design. Consumers with low environmental consciousness mediated ease of justification when exposed to scarce information, thereby increasing their impulse purchase intentions, while consumers with high environmental consciousness did not. The C2C second-hand trading platform can contribute to the interests of both sellers and buyers as an exciting place to purchase scarce goods and consume eco-friendly fashion products. Article Separated muscle belly of the flexor digitorum brevis for the fifth toe: a case report This case report describes a variation of the flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) with a separated muscle belly and tendon at the fifth toe. The narrow tendon and muscle belly for the fifth toe arose from the intermuscular septum between the FDB and abductor digiti minimi adjacent to the arising fibers of the FDB, separating from its other fibers. The tendon and muscle belly for the fifth toe became wider at the base of the metatarsal bones and narrower as it coursed toward the toes in a fusiform shape. The tendon and muscle belly for the fifth toe became thin at the midfoot and coursed just beneath the flexor digitorum longus tendon and entered the digital tendinous sheath. FDB variations including that described herein should be considered when performing various surgical procedures and evaluating the biomechanics of the foot. Article A case of rickets in an artificially raised white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) chick at a zoo . A two-week-old white-tailed eagle presented with an inability to stand and flex its limbs. Despite hatching naturally and owing to lack of parental attention, the bird was raised indoors by zookeepers with no access to sunlight. Palpation and radiographic examination of the bilateral tibiotarsus and femur bone revealed pronounced deformation and curvature, and bilateral decreased bone densities, respectively. The reduced calcium concentration in the blood was treated with calcium gluconate injections and calcium-supplemented feeds. Chopped mouse tails were fed directly, and whole pink-skinned nude mice were fed weekly. The zookeeper also gently massaged the bird and dressed it with a bandage. Sunlight exposure was provided daily. Saliva containing chicken feed was obtained from the mother. The bird could stand properly after four weeks of treatment, and the blood calcium concentration was restored to normal levels. Article Application of 3D-printed prosthetic lower beak in an Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana) To our knowledge, ours is the first case of applying a 3D-printed prosthetic beak to an Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana). A stork in captivity underwent several surgeries for beak fractures, but the lower-mandible fractures failed to be repaired. Therefore, we applied a patient-specific beak prosthesis of titanium alloy and nylon. Because the prosthetic beak could not be maintained due to mandible and soft-tissue inflammation, the stork was euthanized. Article Nasopharyngeal luminal change on cervical radiography in brachycephalic dogs without respiratory signs . This study aimed to prospectively assess nasopharyngeal luminal changes in brachycephalic dogs without respiratory signs using cervical radiography. Forty brachycephalic dogs without cardiopulmonary diseases were included. The nasopharyngeal luminal change was calculated on inspiratory and expiratory cervical lateral radiographs. The median nasopharyngeal luminal change was 21.6% (range, 0.3-85.6%). In five dogs, a nasopharyngeal luminal change of >50% was identified. There was no correlation between nasopharyngeal luminal changes and age, sex, body weight, or body condition score. These results suggest that brachycephalic dogs without cardiopulmonary diseases may be over-diagnosed with partial pharyngeal collapse. Further studies comparing nasopharyngeal luminal changes between clinically healthy brachycephalic dogs and dogs with respiratory signs are warranted. Article Sudden death caused by Aeromonas hydrophila in a Crab-eating Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) associated with captivity stress . Aeromonas hydrophila is a facultative anaerobic gram-negative bacterium regarded as an opportunistic pathogen in animals. A 17-year-old female crab-eating macaque (Macaca fascicularis) died after experiencing anorexia and depression for several days. The carcass was severely emaciated, and the sternum was exposed under subcutaneous lesions in the thorax. Many abnormal pathological lesions were found, including tracheal inflammation, pulmonary inflammatory emphysema, yellowish discoloration of the liver, enlargement of the gall bladder, necrosis of the heart, congested bilateral kidneys, and enlargement of the adrenal glands. The stomach was empty, mucosal ulcerations were found, and the duodenum was congested. Giemsa staining revealed rod-shaped organisms in the whole blood smear and major organs, which were identified as A. hydrophila. The animal had experienced stress, and decreased immune system function possibly contributed to the infection. Article A Nationwide Survey on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Practice Patterns among Pediatric Endoscopists in South Korea Purpose: Gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy is an important tool for diagnosing and treating GI diseases in children. This study aimed to analyze the current GI endoscopy practice patterns among South Korean pediatric endoscopists. Methods: Twelve members of the Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition developed a questionnaire. The questionnaire was emailed to pediatric gastroenterologists attending general and tertiary hospitals in South Korea. Results: The response rate was 86.7% (52/60), and 49 of the respondents (94.2%) were currently performing endoscopy. All respondents were performing esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and 43 (87.8%) were performing colonoscopy. Relatively rare procedures for children, such as double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) (4.1%), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) (2.0%), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) (2.0%), were only performed by pediatric gastroenterologists at very few centers, but were performed by adult endoscopists in most of the centers; of all the respondents, 83.7% (41/49) performed emergency endoscopy. In most centers, the majority of the endoscopies were performed under sedation, with midazolam (100.0%) and ketamine (67.3%) as the most frequently used sedatives. Conclusion: While most pediatric GI endoscopists perform common GI endoscopic procedures, rare procedures, such as DBE, ERCP, and EUS, are only performed by pediatric gastroenterologists at very few centers, and by adult GI endoscopists at most of the centers. For such rare procedures, close communication and cooperation with adult GI endoscopists are required. Article Climate warming induces the activity period prolongation and distribution range expansion of the Asian mantis Hierodula patellifera in South Korea The Asian mantis, Hierodula patellifera, is a native species of South-East Asia and has been designated as a Korean Climate Biological Indicator Species. This study aimed to understand the responses of the phenology and distribution of H. patellifera to recent climate trends in South Korea as well as predictions for future responses. We constructed a combined dataset consisting of 1169 records ranging from 1984 to 2022. The number of records sharply increased over time and space, with citizen science data accounting for the greatest proportion. Our study confirmed the prolongation of the overall activity period of the Asian mantis over the past seven years caused by the advanced emergence and delayed senescence. The distribution range of the species also expanded towards higher latitudes and inland regions over the last 40 years. Species distribution models showed that temperature-related variables in the summer and winter seasons were the most critical factors influencing its distribution. In the future, suitable habitats for this species are predicted to expand across the entire Korean peninsula as temperatures rise based on the SSP climate scenarios. These results support the suitability of H. patellifera, which prefers warm environments, as a biological indicator of climate change. They suggest consistent monitoring under future climate warming. Our study also provides novel insights into the value of citizen science as a critical monitoring tool for detecting the impacts of climate change on ecosystems. Article Fecal Calprotectin Levels Significantly Correlate with Polyp Size in Children and Adolescents with Juvenile Colorectal Polyps Purpose: We aimed to investigate factors that correlate with fecal calprotectin (FC) levels in children and adolescents with colorectal polyps. Methods: Pediatric patients aged <19 years who underwent colonoscopic polypectomy for a juvenile polyps (JPs) and FC tests were simultaneously conducted in a multicenter, retrospective study. Baseline demographics, colonoscopic and histological findings, and laboratory tests, including FC levels, were investigated. Correlations between the factors were investigated, and linear regression analysis revealed factors that correlated with FC levels. FC levels measured after polypectomies were investigated and the FC levels pre-and post-polypectomies were compared. Results: A total of 33 patients were included in the study. According to Pearson correlation analysis, the polyp size was the only factor that showed a statistically significant correlation with FC levels (r=0.75, p<0.001). Furthermore, according to the multivariate linear regression analysis, polyp size was the only factor that showed a statistically significant correlation with FC levels (adjusted R2=0.5718, beta=73.62, p<0.001). The median FC level was 400 mg/ kg (interquartile range [IQR], 141.6-1,000 mg/kg), and the median polyp size was 14 mm (IQR, 9-20 mm). Nineteen patients underwent post-polypectomy FC tests. FC levels showed a significant decrease after polypectomy from a median of 445.2 mg/kg (IQR, 225-1,000) to 26.5 mg/kg (11.5-51) (p<0.001). Conclusion: FC levels significantly correlated with polyp size in children and adolescents with JPs.
