| ○ | ○ | Article | Biotin-Conjugated Poly(Acrylic Acid)-Grafted Ultrasmall Gadolinium Oxide Nanoparticles for Enhanced Tumor Imaging | Herein, biotin (Bio)-conjugated poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-grafted ultrasmall gadolinium oxide nanoparticles (Bio-PAA-Gd2O3 NPs) were synthesized for enhanced tumor imaging using Bio as a tumor-targeting ligand. The average particle diameter of Gd2O3 NPs was 2.1 nm. The Bio-PAA-Gd2O3 NPs exhibited excellent colloidal stability (i. e., no precipitation) and a high longitudinal water proton spin relaxivity (r(1)) of 23.8 s(-1) mM(-1) (r(2)/r(1)=1.6 and r(2)=transverse water proton spin relaxivity), which was & SIM;6 times higher than those of commercial Gd-chelated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Cytotoxicity tests using two cell lines showed that the Bio-PAA-Gd2O3 NPs were almost non-toxic up to the measured concentration of 500 & mu;M Gd. The enhanced tumor imaging of the Bio-PAA-Gd2O3 NPs was demonstrated through their higher positive contrasts and longer contrast retention at the tumor after intravenous injection in T-1 MR images, compared with those of the control PAA-Gd2O3 NPs. | Ahmad, Mohammad Yaseen; Liu, Shuwen; Tegafaw, Tirusew; Al Saidi, Abdullah Khamis Ali; Zhao, Dejun; Liu, Ying; Lee, Sangyeol; Kim, Seungho; Yang, So Hyeon; Hwang, Dong Wook; Baek, Ahrum; Jung, Jae Chang; Nam, Sung-Wook; Chae, Kwon Seok; Chang, Yongmin; Lee, Gang Ho | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Nat Sci, Dept Chem, Taegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Biomed Sci, Taegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Biomed Engn Res, Taegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Nat Sci, Dept Biol, Taegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Mol Med, Taegu 41944, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Teachers Coll, Dept Biol Educ, Taegu 41566, South Korea | ; Liu, Shuwen/ABD-5719-2021; Ahmad, Mohammad/AAH-2164-2020; Nam, Sung-Wook/V-5519-2019 | 57203054570; 57208926248; 55983618600; 57217492867; 57222567792; 57221731093; 57875786900; 57218284791; 58034142900; 57749644800; 57194601711; 57203377467; 16167127700; 15743626400; 7501840633; 7404851841 | ychang@knu.ac.kr;ghlee@mail.knu.ac.kr; | EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY | EUR J INORG CHEM | 1434-1948 | 1099-0682 | 26 | 27 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, INORGANIC & NUCLEAR | 2023 | 2.2 | 51.1 | 0.16 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 1 | biotin; tumor targeting; nanoparticles; magnetic resonance imaging; tumor models | CONTRAST AGENTS; DRUG-DELIVERY; CANCER; COMPLEXES; CLEARANCE | biotin; magnetic resonance imaging; nanoparticles; tumor models; tumor targeting | Carboxylic acids; Cell culture; Coenzymes; Gadolinium compounds; Grafting (chemical); Image enhancement; Nanomagnetics; Nanoparticles; Synthesis (chemical); Tumors; Bio-conjugated; Biotin; Poly(acrylic acid); Proton spins; Relaxivity; Synthesised; Tumor imaging; Tumor models; Tumor-targeting; Ultra-small; Magnetic resonance imaging | English | 2023 | 2023-09-25 | 10.1002/ejic.202300430 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |
| ○ | ○ | Article | Clinical Evaluation of a Hydrophobic Intraocular Lens Using a Preloaded Automated Injector in a Korean Population | Purpose: This study assessed post-market clinical outcomes of the Clareon monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) preloaded in the AutonoMe Delivery System in a real-world setting of Korean patients. Methods: This prospective, multicenter, single-arm study in Korea was conducted from July 2020 to December 2021. Patients were >= 20 years old with unilateral or bilateral cataracts who received Clareon IOLs (CNA0T0) preloaded in an automated injector system. Best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA) and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) were evaluated under photopic conditions. Surgeon delivery system preference was assessed using a survey questionnaire. Glistenings, surface haze, adverse events, posterior capsule opacification (PCO), and Nd:YAG capsulotomy rates were also assessed during the 12-month postoperative follow-up. Results: Mean +/- SD monocular BCDVA was 0.02 +/- 0.11 and 0.00 +/- 0.10 logMAR at 1 month and 12 months, respectively. BCDVA of 0.2 logMAR or better was achieved by 94.4% and 99.1% of eyes at 1 month and 12 months after implantation, respectively. Mean monocular UCDVA was 0.11 +/- 0.14 and 0.07 +/- 0.13 logMAR at 1 month and 12 months, respectively. UCDVA of 0.3 logMAR or better was achieved by 97.4% of eyes at 12 months after implantation. Preparation of the automated injector system was rated as "very easy" or "easy" and CNA0T0 IOL delivery was rated as "very controllable" or "controllable" by all surgeons. Only grade 0 glistenings and no surface haze were observed during the 12-month follow-up. No clinically significant PCO or Nd:YAG capsulotomy were reported throughout the study; clinically nonsignificant PCO was reported in 23% of eyes. Conclusion: This 12-month real-world study of the CNA0T0 IOL and the automated injector system demonstrated excellent visual outcomes and high surgeon satisfaction. | Kim, Hong Kyun; Seo, Kyoung Yul; Yoon, Kyung Chul; Choi, Chul Young; Chung, Tae-Young; Hyon, Joon Young; Rendon, Alexis; Kim, Hyun Seung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Ophthalmol, Daegu, South Korea; Yonsei Univ, Inst Vis Res, Dept Ophthalmol, Coll Med, Seoul, South Korea; Cornea Dystrophy Res Inst, Seoul, South Korea; Chonnam Natl Univ, Med Sch & Hosp, Dept Ophthalmol, Gwangju, South Korea; Sungkyunkwan Univ, Sch Med, Kangbuk Samsung Hosp, Dept Ophthalmol, Seoul, South Korea; Sungkyunkwan Univ, Sch Med, Samsung Med Ctr, Dept Ophthalmol, Seoul, South Korea; Seoul Natl Univ, Bundang Hosp, Coll Med, Dept Ophthalmol, Seongnam, South Korea; Alcon Vision LLC, Ft Worth, TX USA; Catholic Univ Korea, Seoul St Marys Hosp, Coll Med, Dept Ophthalmol & Visual Sci, Seoul, South Korea | Kim, Hyun-Jong/X-3662-2019; Seo, Kyoung/I-5484-2019; Hyon, Joon/J-5720-2012; Kim, Hong Kyun/ITT-7758-2023; Choi, Chul Young/O-1208-2016 | 57218260940; 7201839260; 7401607582; 14522006600; 7401571091; 6507588001; 57193327159; 57191372553 | sara514@catholic.ac.kr; | CLINICAL OPHTHALMOLOGY | CLIN OPHTHALMOL | 1177-5483 | 17 | ESCI | OPHTHALMOLOGY | 2023 | 1.8 | 51.1 | 0.33 | 2025-06-25 | 1 | 1 | visual acuity; intraocular lens delivery; glistenings; surface haze; surgeon's preference questionnaire | CORNEAL INCISION ENLARGEMENT; DELIVERY-SYSTEM; MULTICENTER EVALUATION; IOL; OUTCOMES | glistenings; intraocular lens delivery; surface haze; surgeon’s preference questionnaire; visual acuity | chondroitin sulfate; hyaluronic acid; adult; adverse event; aged; anterior eye chamber depth; Article; astigmatism; best corrected visual acuity; capsulotomy; cataract; clinical evaluation; clinical outcome; corrected distance visual acuity; ergonomics; eye axis length; female; follow up; glistening; human; intraocular pressure; Korean (people); lens implantation; major clinical study; male; multicenter study; phacoemulsification; post market clinical outcome; postmarketing surveillance; postoperative follow up; prospective study; questionnaire; surface haze; surgeon preference questionnaire; uncorrected distance visual acuity; visual acuity; visual system parameters | English | 2023 | 2023 | 10.2147/opth.s421864 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Gibberellin-Producing Bacteria Isolated from Coastal Soil Enhance Seed Germination of Mallow and Broccoli Plants under Saline Conditions | Salinity hinders plant growth, posing a substantial challenge to sustainable agricultural yield maintenance. The application of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) offers an emerging strategy to mitigate the detrimental effects of high salinity levels. This study aimed to isolate and identify gibberellin-producing bacteria and their impact on the seed germination of Malva verticillata (mallow) and Brassica oleracea var. italica (broccoli) under salt stress. In this study, seven bacterial isolates (KW01, KW02, KW03, KW04, KW05, KW06, and KW07) were used to assess their capacity for producing various growth-promoting traits and their tolerance to varying amounts of salinity (100 mM and 150 Mm NaCl). The findings revealed that KW05 and KW07 isolates outperformed other isolates in synthesizing indole-3-acetic acid, siderophores, and exopolysaccharides and in solubilizing phosphates. These isolates also enhanced phosphatase activity and antioxidant levels, including superoxide dismutase and catalase. Both KW05 and KW07 isolate highlight the growth-promoting effects of gibberellin by enhancing of growth parameters of Waito-C rice. Further, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry validation confirmed the ability of KW05 and KW07 to produce gibberellins (GAs), including GA1, GA3, GA4, and GA7. Seed germination metrics were enhanced due to the inoculation of KW05 and KW07. Moreover, inoculation with KW05 increased the fresh weight (FW) (7.82%) and total length (38.61%) of mallow under salt stress. Inoculation with KW07 increased the FW (32.04%) and shoot length of mallow under salt stress. A single inoculation of these two isolates increased broccoli plants' FW and shoot length under salt stress. Gibberellin-producing bacteria helps in plant growth promotion by improving salt tolerance by stimulating root elongation and facilitating enhanced absorption of water and nutrient uptake in salty environments. Based on these findings, they can play a role in boosting agricultural yield in salt-affected areas, which would help to ensure the long-term viability of agriculture in coastal regions. | Woo, Ji-In; Injamum-Ul-Hoque, Md.; Zainurin, Nazree; Shaffique, Shifa; Kwon, Eun-Hae; Gam, Ho-Jun; Jeon, Jin Ryeol; Lee, In-Jung; Joo, Gil-Jae; Kang, Sang-Mo; Iadarola, Paolo | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Appl Biosci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Agr Sci & Technol, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Injamum-Ul-Hoque/ADJ-9141-2022; Lee, In-Jung/GLS-0432-2022; Kang, Sang-Mo/MBG-7823-2025; shaffique, shifa/KUC-7102-2024; Gam, Hojun/MXJ-6421-2025 | 58295960600; 58663974700; 58777436700; 57203898867; 57224398710; 57450591400; 58781998600; 16425830900; 7006364599; 56189696900 | wjxsj99@naver.com;mdinjamum92@knu.ac.kr;nazreezainurin@hotmail.com;shifa.2021@knu.ac.kr;eunhaekwon@naver.com;jeff4237@naver.com;98micael10@naver.com;ijlee@knu.ac.kr;gjjoo@knu.ac.kr;sangmo@knu.ac.kr; | BIOTECH | BIOTECH-BASEL | 2673-6284 | 12 | 4 | ESCI | BIOTECHNOLOGY & APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY | 2023 | 2.7 | 51.4 | 0.88 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 6 | salt stress; plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria; antioxidants; percent germination; germination performance index | ANTIOXIDANT ENZYMES; SALT TOLERANCE; GROWTH; STRESS; WHEAT; MECHANISMS; DORMANCY | antioxidants; germination performance index; percent germination; plant growth–promoting rhizobacteria; salt stress | English | 2023 | 2023-12 | 10.3390/biotech12040066 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Scalable Optical Convolutional Neural Networks Based on Free-Space Optics Using Lens Arrays and a Spatial Light Modulator | A scalable optical convolutional neural network (SOCNN) based on free-space optics and Koehler illumination was proposed to address the limitations of the previous 4f correlator system. Unlike Abbe illumination, Koehler illumination provides more uniform illumination and reduces crosstalk. The SOCNN allows for scaling of the input array and the use of incoherent light sources. Hence, the problems associated with 4f correlator systems can be avoided. We analyzed the limitations in scaling the kernel size and parallel throughput and found that the SOCNN can offer a multilayer convolutional neural network with massive optical parallelism. | Ju, Young-Gu | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Phys Educ, 80 Daehakro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | 7202809560 | ygju@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF IMAGING | J IMAGING | 2313-433X | 9 | 11 | ESCI | IMAGING SCIENCE & PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY | 2023 | 2.7 | 51.4 | 0.72 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 6 | optical neural network; convolutional neural network; free-space optics; optical computer; smart pixels | convolutional neural network; free-space optics; optical computer; optical neural network; smart pixels | Convolutional neural networks; Lenses; Light modulators; Light sources; Multilayer neural networks; 4f correlators; Convolutional neural network; Correlator systems; Freespace optics; Koehler; Network-based; Optical computers; Optical neural networks; Optical-; Smart pixels; Convolution | English | 2023 | 2023-11 | 10.3390/jimaging9110241 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | A converged approach of electro-biological process for decolorization and degradation of toxic synthetic dyes | Being one of the leading industries worldwide, the textile industry has been consuming large quantities of groundwater and discharging huge volumes of dye-contaminated effluents into our aquatic environment. Augmentation of water sources via reuse of treated effluents is therefore highly necessary. In the present study, the decolorization and degradation of synthetic toxic dye from an aqueous solution were investigated through an electro-biological route. Initially, decolorization of synthetic dye solutions (100, 500, and 1000 mg L-1) was carried out by electrooxidation process using mixed metal oxide and titanium as anode and cathode, respectively. The electrooxidation solutions were further treated using bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) that were isolated from petroleum-transporting pipelines. UV-Vis, TOC, chemical oxygen demand, and NMR analyses revealed that the biodegradation process with electrooxidation enhanced the mineralization of the synthetic dye solutions. An optimum NaCl electrolyte concentration of 3 g L-1 was sufficient to produce reactive species viz., free chlorine and hypochlorite, which are responsible for the Reactive Blue 19 (RB-19) decolorization. Among the three RB-19 concentrations, the highest removal percentage was noticed at 100 mg L-1 (100%) with energy consumption and energy costs equal to 5.44 kWh m(-3) and 0.65 USD m(-3), respectively. | Annamalai, Sivasankar; Muthukumar, Venkatesan; Alkhulaifi, Manal M. | CSIR Cent Electrochem Res Inst, Karaikkudi 630003, Tamil Nadu, India; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Architecture Civil Environm & Energy Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Vellore Inst Technol, Dept Chem, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India; King Saud Univ, Dept Bot & Microbiol, Coll Sci, PO 2455, Riyadh 11451, Saudi Arabia | muthukumar, venkatesan/AGA-9250-2022; Annamalai, Sivasankar/G-7823-2016 | 56388546200; 57212089147; 56245522900 | asivasankar87@gmail.com; | ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING AND ASSESSMENT | ENVIRON MONIT ASSESS | 0167-6369 | 1573-2959 | 195 | 1 | SCIE | ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES | 2023 | 2.9 | 51.5 | 0.66 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 6 | IrO2-RuO2-TiO2; Ti anode; Electrooxidation; Biodegradation; RB-19; Energy consumption; Cost analysis | REACTIVE BLUE 19; ELECTROCHEMICAL DEGRADATION; TEXTILE DYES; WASTE-WATER; ANTHRAQUINONE DYE; AQUEOUS-SOLUTION; AZO DYES; OXIDATION; EFFLUENT; REMEDIATION | Biodegradation; Cost analysis; Electrooxidation; Energy consumption; IrO2-RuO2-TiO2/Ti anode; RB-19 | Biodegradation, Environmental; Biological Phenomena; Chlorine; Coloring Agents; Environmental Monitoring; Hypochlorous Acid; Petroleum; Sodium Chloride; Textile Industry; Titanium; Water; Anodes; Bacteria; Biodegradation; Chemical oxygen demand; Crude oil; Effluents; Electrolytes; Electrooxidation; Groundwater; Metals; Ruthenium compounds; Sodium chloride; Textile industry; Titanium dioxide; Wastewater reclamation; Wastewater treatment; chlorine; dye; electrolyte solution; hypochlorite; metal oxide; petroleum; reactive blue 19; sodium chloride; titanium; titanium dioxide; unclassified drug; coloring agent; hypochlorous acid; petroleum; Remazol Brilliant Blue R; water; Biological process; Cost analysis; Decolourization; Dye solutions; Electrooxidations; Energy-consumption; IrO2-RuO2-TiO2/ti anode; Reactive blue 19; Synthetic dyes; Ti anodes; biodegradation; cost analysis; dye; effluent; electrolyte; energy use; mineralization; oxidation; aqueous solution; Article; bacterium isolate; bacterium isolation; biodegradation; chemical oxygen demand; concentration response; controlled study; cost benefit analysis; decolorization; electrochemistry; energy consumption; energy cost; mineralization; nonhuman; nuclear magnetic resonance imaging; pipeline; Pseudomonas aeruginosa; total organic carbon; ultraviolet radiation; bioremediation; cellular, subcellular and molecular biological phenomena and functions; chemistry; environmental monitoring; textile industry; Energy utilization | English | 2023 | 2023-01 | 10.1007/s10661-022-10583-x | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |
| ○ | ○ | Article | Analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with the vitamin D pathway in the placentas of women with gestational diabetes mellitus: a laboratory study | Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of genes known to be involved in vitamin D metabolism in the placenta using the placental tissue of mothers diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to determine whether the SNPs and occurrence of GDM are related. Methods: We enrolled 80 women of the same gestational age, 40 with and 40 without GDM. The placenta was obtained from each woman after delivery and SNP genotyping was performed on seven SNPs in the CYP27B1 (rs10877012), CYP24A1 (rs2248359, rs6013897, and rs2209314), and GC (rs2282679, rs16847024, and rs3733359) genes. Maternal serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were measured during the first trimester of pregnancy and before delivery. Results: At the time of delivery, vitamin D levels were lower (21.05 +/- 12.05 mg/dL vs. 31.31 +/- 20.72 mg/dL, p = 0.012) and the frequency of vitamin D deficiency was higher (60.7% vs. 32.5%, p = 0.040) in the GDM group. In women with GDM, the G allele of rs10877012 was more common (86.3% vs. 65.0%, p = 0.002). The rs10877012 GG genotype was more common in the GDM group (72.5% vs. 42.5%, p = 0.007) and the rs10877012 TT genotype was more common in the control group (12.5% vs. 0%, p = 0.007). Conclusion: Mothers with GDM have lower serum concentrations of vitamin D before delivery than healthy controls and vitamin D deficiency is common. A polymorphism in CYP27B1 (rs10877012) is considered to be a cause of GDM pathogenesis. | Kim, Mi Ju; Kim, Hyun Mi; Cha, Hyun-Hwa; Seong, Won Joon | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Obstet & Gynecol, 130 Dongdeok Ro, Daegu 41944, South Korea | Kim, Mi Ju/HGU-8470-2022 | 55908927600; 57219838830; 37033517800; 26656946000 | wjseong@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.12 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 1 | CYP27B1; Gestational diabetes mellitus; rs10877012; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Vitamin D deficiency | LINKAGE DISEQUILIBRIUM; CALCIUM HOMEOSTASIS; METABOLISM; CYP27B1; PREVALENCE; RECURRENCE; PREGNANCY; LACTATION; CYP2R1; CELLS | CYP27B1; Gestational diabetes mellitus; rs10877012; Single nucleotide polymorphism; Vitamin D deficiency | English | 2023 | 2023-11 | 10.12701/jyms.2023.00150 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Association between dental amalgam restoration and urine mercury concentrations among young women: a cross-sectional study | Background: The association between dental amalgam fillings and urine mercury concentrations was investigated in this study to assess the health risks associated with dental amalgams. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 99 women in their 20s who visited the dental clinic in Daegu, Korea. The 99 participants were composed of 68 subjects who had dental amalgam fillings (exposure group) and 31 subjects who did not have dental amalgam fillings (nonexposure group). Oral examinations were conducted by a single dental hygienist, sociodemographic features were investigated as confounding variables, and urine mercury concentrations were measured using an automatic mercury analyzer. Results: The mean +/- standard deviation of the urine mercury concentrations of the exposure and nonexposure groups were 1.50 +/- 1.78 mu g/g creatinine and 0.53 +/- 0.63 mu g/g creatinine, respectively. The exposure group showed significantly higher levels than the nonexposure group (p<0.01). The urine mercury concentration significantly increased with an increase in the number of teeth filled with amalgam, cavity surfaces involved, and number of defective amalgam fillings, and according to the latest exposure time (p<0.001). In the multiple regression analysis of amalgam-related factors and urine mercury concentrations after correction for confounding factors, the urine mercury concentration in the group with six or more amalgam-filled teeth, 11 or more cavity surfaces, and two or more defective amalgams was significantly higher than that in the nonexposure group (p<0.001). Conclusion: According to this study, exposure to dental amalgams was confirmed to significantly affect urine mercury concentrations. | Park, Su -Bin; Kim, Eun-Kyong; Sakong, Joon; Park, Eun Young | Yeungnam Univ, Grad Sch Environm & Publ Hlth Studies, Dept Publ Hlth, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Sci & Technol, Dept Dent Hyg, Sangju, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Coll Med, Dept Prevent Med & Publ Hlth, Daegu, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Coll Med, Dept Dent, Daegu, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Dept Dent, Coll Med, 170 Hyeonchung Ro, Daegu 42415, South Korea | Sakong, Joon/AFE-2002-2022; Park, Su-Bin/IVH-9442-2023 | 58741610900; 55915892100; 6506105070; 57188575494 | acidic@yu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 4 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.24 | 2025-06-25 | 1 | 2 | Dental amalgam; Mercury; Urine; Women | EXPOSURE; EXCRETION; CHILDREN | Dental amalgam; Mercury; Urine; Women | English | 2023 | 2023 | 10.12701/jyms.2022.00955 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Association between fatty liver disease and hearing impairment in Korean adults: a retrospective cross-sectional study | Background: We hypothesized that fatty liver disease (FLD) is associated with a high prevalence of hearing loss (HL) owing to metabolic disturbances. This study aimed to evaluate the association between FLD and HL in a large sample of the Korean population. Methods: We used a dataset of adults who underwent routine voluntary health checkups (n = 21,316). Fatty liver index (FLI) was calculated using Bedogni's equation. The patients were divided into two groups: the non-FLD (NFLD) group (n =18,518, FLI = 60). Hearing thresholds were measured using an automatic audiometer. The average hearing threshold (AHT) was calculated as the pure-tone average at four frequencies (0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kHz). HL was defined as an AHT of >40 dB. Results: HL was observed in 1,370 (7.4%) and 238 patients (8.5%) in the NFLD and FLD groups, respectively (p=0.041). Compared with the NFLD group, the odds ratio for HL in the FLD group was 1.16 (p= 0.040) and 1.46 (p<0.001) in univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, respectively. Linear regression analyses revealed that FLI was positively associated with AHT in both univariate and multivariate analyses. Analyses using a propensity score-matched cohort showed trends similar to those using the total cohort. Conclusion: FLD and FLI were associated with poor hearing thresholds and HL. Therefore, active monitoring of hearing impairment in patients with FLD may be helpful for early diagnosis and treatment of HL in the general population. | Jung, Da Jung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, 130 Dongdeok Ro, Taegu 700721, South Korea | 57220970862 | wjddk0731@naver.com; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 4 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.47 | 2025-06-25 | 3 | 4 | Fatty liver; Hearing impairment; Hearing loss; Metabolic syndrome | INSULIN-RESISTANCE; INDEX; VALIDATION; FIBROSIS; RISK | Fatty liver; Hearing impairment; Hearing loss; Metabolic syndrome | English | 2023 | 2023 | 10.12701/jyms.2023.00304 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Comparison of serum anti-Mullerian hormone between unilateral and bilateral ovarian endometriomas during follicular, luteal, and random menstrual phases: a retrospective study | Background: Over the last two decades, serum levels of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) have been shown to be reliable markers of ovarian reserve. This study aimed to compare baseline serum AMH levels and well-controlled clinical factors between patients with unilateral and bilateral ovarian endometriomas during the menstrual phase. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study. We enrolled 136 patients aged 18 to 36 years who were diagnosed with unilateral or bilateral ovarian endometriomas. Serum AMH levels of all patients and their latest two to three menstrual cycles were measured before surgery for ovarian endometriomas. The latest menstrual cycle length ranged from 26 to 30 days. Patients with irregular menstruation, a recent medication history of hormonal drugs other than oral contraceptive pills, a previous history of ovarian surgery, or any medical history influencing ovarian function were excluded. Results: Of the 136 patients, 76 (55.9%) had unilateral ovarian endometriomas and 60 (44.1%) had bilateral ovarian endometriomas. Serum AMH levels were not significantly different between the two groups in the follicular phase, luteal phase, or at any random time point. Conclusion: Serum AMH levels were not significantly different between unilateral and bilateral ovarian endometriomas in the follicular and luteal phases, or at any random time during the menstrual cycle when various confounding factors were excluded. | Lee, Juhun; Kim, Jong Mi; Chong, Gun Oh; Hong, Dae Gy; Lee, Yoon Hee | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Obstet & Gynecol, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Chilgok Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Obstet & Gynecol, 807 Hoguk Ro, Daegu 41404, South Korea | 57360628800; 57212764251; 23099068000; 26656670100; 37088851700 | yhlee1017@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.12 | 2025-06-25 | 2 | 1 | Endometriosis; Menstruation; Mullerian inhibiting substance; Ovarian endometriosis; Ovarian reserve | ANTIMULLERIAN HORMONE | Endometriosis; Menstruation; Mullerian inhibiting substance; Ovarian endometriosis; Ovarian reserve | English | 2023 | 2023-11 | 10.12701/jyms.2023.00661 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Effect of prehydration solution on hearing threshold after chemotherapy in patients with head and neck cancers: a retrospective study | Background: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of prehydration solution on hearing thresholds after cisplatin chemotherapy. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we reviewed the data of patients who underwent >= 3 courses of cisplatin-based chemotherapy for locally advanced head and neck cancers at a tertiary referral center (n = 64). The dextrose solution (DW) group (n = 26) received 2 L of normal saline and 1 L of 5% dextrose. The Hartmann solution (HS) group (n =38) received 2 L of normal saline and 1 L of HS. Hearing data were measured 1 day before starting the first course of chemotherapy, and again 20 days after the first, second, and third courses of chemotherapy. The severity of hearing loss was evaluated using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE).Results: Thresholds at all frequencies after chemotherapy were greater in the DW group than in the HS group. The increase in thresholds in 1 to 4 kHz after the third course of chemotherapy was greater in the DW group than in the HS group. CTCAE grades after the second and third courses of chemotherapy were greater in the DW group than in the HS group. Logistic regression showed that the odds ratio for CTCAE grade 3 or 4 after the third course of chemotherapy in the DW group was 4.84 on univariate analysis. Conclusion: Prehydration using a solution with salt was associated with a decrease in change in hearing thresholds after cisplatin chemotherapy in patients with head and neck cancers. | Ahn, Dongbin; Lee, Kyu-Yup; Oh, Eunjung; Oh, Minji; Jung, Boseung; Jung, Da Jung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head Neck Surg, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Otorhinolaryngol Head & Neck Surg, 130 Dongdeok Ro, Daegu 41944, South Korea | Lee, Doh Young/GLR-9586-2022 | 44761055400; 22135779500; 57844473100; 57877906400; 58740925700; 57220970862 | wjddk0731@naver.com; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 2 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 0 | Cisplatin; Drug therapy; Hearing; Solutions | CISPLATIN-INDUCED OTOTOXICITY; MOLECULAR-MECHANISMS; NEPHROTOXICITY; PREVENTION | Cisplatin; Drug therapy; Hearing; Solutions | English | 2023 | 2023-04 | 10.12701/jyms.2022.00276 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Effects of propofol-remifentanil versus sevoflurane-remifentanil on acute postoperative pain after total shoulder arthroplasty: a randomized trial | Background: While some evidence indicates that propofol-based anesthesia has less postoperative pain than sevoflurane-based anesthesia, these results are controversial. We compared acute postoperative pain intensity and opioid consumption after total shoulder arthroplasty between propofol-remifentanil (PR) and sevoflurane-remifentanil (SR) anesthesia. Methods: Among 48 patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopic surgery anesthetized with PR or SR, postoperative pain intensity was assessed at 30 minutes and at 2, 6, 12, and 24 hours. The total patient-controlled analgesia volume and number of patients requiring rescue analgesics were assessed. Results: No significant difference in postoperative pain intensity was observed between the two groups. Postoperative opioid consumption and analgesic requirements were also comparable in the first 24 hours after surgery. Conclusion: PR and SR anesthesia for shoulder arthroscopic surgery provide comparable postoperative analgesia results. | Choi, Eun Kyung; Kim, Saeyoung; Kim, Do young | Yeungnam Univ, Coll Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, Daegu, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Coll Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, 170 Hyeonchung Ro, Daegu 42415, South Korea | 56783515900; 36113916600; 57655158200 | zzini0527@naver.com; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 3 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.12 | 2025-06-25 | 1 | 1 | Anesthesia; Propofol; Sevoflurane; Total shoulder arthroplasty | CONGENITAL-ANOMALIES; SEX-DIFFERENCES; MATERNAL AGE; MALFORMATIONS; PERFORMANCE; PREGNANCIES; TERMINATION; INFANT | Anesthesia; Propofol; Sevoflurane; Total shoulder arthroplasty | English | 2023 | 2023-07 | 10.12701/jyms.2022.00129 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Review | Hepatic encephalopathy on magnetic resonance imaging and its uncertain differential diagnoses: a narrative review | Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a severe neuropsychiatric abnormality in patients with either acute or chronic liver failure. Typical brain magnetic resonance imaging findings of HE are bilateral basal ganglia high signal intensities due to manganese deposition in chronic liver disease and hyperintensity in T2, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, or diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with hemispheric white matter changes including the corticospinal tract. Low values on apparent diffusion coefficient mapping of the affected area on DWI, indicating cytotoxic edema, can be observed in acute HE. However, neuropsychological impairment in HE ranges from mild deficits in psychomotor abilities affecting quality of life to stupor or coma with higher grades of hepatic dysfunction. In particular, the long-lasting compensatory mechanisms for the altered metabolism in chronic liver disease make HE imaging results variable. Therefore, the clinical relevance of imaging findings is uncertain and differentiating HE from other metabolic diseases can be difficult. The recent introduction of concepts such as "acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF)," a new clinical entity, has led to a change in the clinical view of HE. Accordingly, there is a need to establish a corresponding concept in the field of neuroimaging diagnosis. Herein, we review HE from a historical and etiological perspective to increase understanding of brain imaging and help establish an imaging approach for advanced new concepts such as ACLF. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide an understanding of HE by reviewing neuroimaging findings based on pathological and clinical concepts of HE, thereby assisting in neuroimaging interpretation. | Lim, Chun Geun; Hahm, Myong Hun; Lee, Hui Joong | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Radiol, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Radiol, 130 Dongduk Ro, Daegu 41944, South Korea | LIM, CHUN GEUN/GXH-5232-2022 | 57195922967; 56015548700; 23485776600 | leehuijoong@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 2 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.51 | 2025-06-25 | 8 | 9 | End stage liver disease; Hepatic encephalopathy; Magnetic resonance imaging | SINGLE-PATCH TECHNIQUE; REPAIR | End stage liver disease; Hepatic encephalopathy; Magnetic resonance imaging | English | 2023 | 2023-04 | 10.12701/jyms.2022.00689 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Review | Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury with respect to oxidative stress and inflammatory response: a narrative review | Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury is a major complication of liver transplantation, trauma, and shock. This pathological condition can lead to graft dysfunction and rejection in the field of liver transplantation and clinical hepatic dysfunction with increased mortality. Although the pathological mechanisms of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury are very complex, and several intermediators and cells are involved in this phenomenon, oxidative stress and inflammatory responses are the key processes that aggravate hepatic injury. This review summarizes the current understanding of oxidative stress and inflammatory responses and, in that respect, addresses the therapeutic approaches to attenuate hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. | Choi, Eun Kyung; Lim, Dong Gun | Yeungnam Univ, Coll Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, 130 Dongdeok Ro, Daegu 41944, South Korea | 56783515900; 55420302000 | dglim@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 2 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0.79 | 2025-06-25 | 17 | 16 | Inflammation; Ischemia; Liver; Oxidative stress; Reperfusion injury | FAMILY MEDICINE; CORE VALUES; CARE | Inflammation; Ischemia; Liver; Oxidative stress; Reperfusion injury | English | 2023 | 2023-04 | 10.12701/jyms.2022.00017 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Intra-abdominal hypertension during hip arthroscopy: a case report | Symptomatic extravasation of irrigation fluid is a rare complication of hip arthroscopy. However, depending on the amount of fluid, intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) may occur and even develop into abdominal compartment syndrome, which can seriously alter hemodynamic circulation. Therefore, it is important for anesthesiologists to promptly recognize the abnormal signs of IAH for early diagnosis and better clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, these signs are difficult to detect because they are usually obscured when the patient is under anesthesia and masked by surgical drapes. We report a case of IAH under general anesthesia during hip arthroscopy to highlight possible symptoms and signs. | Kim, Saeyoung; Ri, Hyun-Su; Kim, Ji Hyun; Yeom, Jiyong | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Sch Med, Dept Anesthesiol & Pain Med, 130 Dongdeok Ro, Daegu, South Korea | 36113916600; 42462457900; 58607576700; 58739200400 | johnri@knu.ac.kr; | JOURNAL OF YEUNGNAM MEDICAL SCIENCE | J YEUNGNAM MED SCI | 2799-8010 | 40 | 1 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 1 | 0 | Arthroscopy; Compartment syndromes; Hypothermia; Intra-abdominal hypertension | ABDOMINAL COMPARTMENT SYNDROME; FLUID EXTRAVASATION | Arthroscopy; Compartment syndromes; Hypothermia; Intra-abdominal hypertension | English | 2023 | 2023 | 10.12701/jyms.2022.00430 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Juxtacortical White Matter Hypointensity on T2*Gradient Echo Image in Vanishing White Matter Disease: A Case Report | Objective: Congenital defects/diseases Background: Vanishing white matter disease (VWMD) - also known as childhood ataxia with central nervous system hypo-myelination - is one of the most commonly inherited white matter diseases in children. Notably, a course of chronic progressive disease with episodes of rapid and major stress-induced neurological deterioration, such as fever and minor head trauma, is a typical clinical feature of VWMD. The combination of clinical features with specific magnetic resonance imaging findings, including diffuse and extensive white matter lesions with rarefaction or cystic destruction, could recommend a genetic diagnosis. However, VWMD is phenotypically di-verse and can affect individuals of all ages. Case Report: A 29-year-old female patient presented with recent aggravation in gait disturbance. She had progressive move-ment disorder, with symptoms ranging from hand tremors to upper-and lower-extremity weakness, for 5 years. Whole-exome sequencing was performed to confirm the diagnosis of VWMD, and it revealed a mutation in homozygous eIF2B2 gene. The temporal evolution of VWMD observed in the patient for 17 years (from the age of 12 to 29 years) indicated an increased extent of T2 white matter hyperintensity in the cerebrum into the cerebellum and an increased amount of dark signal intensities in the globus pallidus and dentate nucleus. Moreover, a T2*-weighted imaging (WI) scan revealed diffuse, linear, and symmetrical hypointensity along the juxtacortical white matter on the magnification view. Conclusions: This is the case report about rare and unusual finding of diffuse linear juxtacortical white matter hypointensi-ty on T2*-WI scan as a potential radiographic marker for adult-onset VWMD. | Lim, Chun Geun; Hahm, Myong Hun; Lee, Hui Joong | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Med, Dept Radiol, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Dept Radiol, Daegu, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Chilgok Hosp, Dept Radiol, Daegu, South Korea | LIM, CHUN GEUN/GXH-5232-2022 | 57195922967; 56015548700; 23485776600 | leehuijoong@knu.ac.kr; | AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CASE REPORTS | AM J CASE REP | 1941-5923 | 24 | ESCI | MEDICINE, GENERAL & INTERNAL | 2023 | 1 | 51.5 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 0 | Leukoencephalopathies; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Vanishing White Matter Leukodystrophy with Ovarian Failure | LEUKOENCEPHALOPATHY; MRI; LEUKODYSTROPHY; ONSET | Leukoencephalopathies; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; Vanishing White Matter Leukodystrophy with Ovarian Failure | Adolescent; Adult; Cerebellum; Child; Craniocerebral Trauma; Female; Humans; Leukoencephalopathies; Magnetic Resonance Imaging; White Matter; Young Adult; protein; adult; Article; blood analysis; case report; cerebrospinal fluid analysis; clinical article; clinical feature; congenital cataract; dentate nucleus; disease exacerbation; eif2b2 gene; female; fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging; gait disorder; genetic variability; globus pallidus; hand tremor; headache; heterozygote; hormone substitution; human; menarche; mother; motor dysfunction; muscle weakness; neurologic examination; oligomenorrhea; outpatient department; ovary insufficiency; pathophysiology; phacoemulsification; protein blood level; T2 weighted imaging; thalamus; vanishing white matter disease; whole exome sequencing; adolescent; cerebellum; child; diagnostic imaging; genetics; head injury; leukoencephalopathy; nuclear magnetic resonance imaging; pathology; procedures; white matter; young adult | English | 2023 | 2023-02-16 | 10.12659/ajcr.938569 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 |
