Article Evolution and international transmission of H3N2 canine influenza A viruses from Korea during 2014-2017 Avian-origin H3N2 canine influenza A viruses (CIVs) have become enzootic in China and Korea and have sporadically transmitted to North America, causing multiple epidemics. We isolated six CIVs in Korea from CIV-infected patients during 2014-2017 and conducted whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Results revealed that CIVs have circulated and evolved in Korea since the early 2000s and then diversified into a new clade, probably contributing to multiple epidemics in China, the USA, and Canada. Our findings bridge an evolutionary gap for understanding the global transmission of CIVs, emphasizing the significance of continuous monitoring of CIVs. Article Successful repair of coracoid and femur fractures in a Eurasian eagle owl (Bubo bubo) and its post-release survival To our knowledge, this is the first case of concurrent diaphyseal left coracoid and left femoral fractures in a Eurasian eagle owl and its post-release survival in Korea. The femur was surgically repaired using an external skeletal fixator-intramedullary (IM) pin tie-in method, and the coracoid was repaired solely with an IM pin on day 6 after femur surgery. The eagle owl underwent a gradual rehabilitation process. The bird was successfully rehabilitated and released 101 d after initial presentation. The bird was monitored using a wildlife tracking device and was confirmed to have survived for over 5 mon in the wild. Article Boosted support vector machines with genetic selection This paper describes the experimental studies of ensembles of binary classifiers conformed of individual support vector machines. The GenBoost-SVM method is proposed to construct such ensembles. Our ensembles considered an adaptive boosting algorithm. We analyzed different pre-selections using genetic algorithms to reduce the size of the training samples and hence the training times. These genetic selections addressed the imbalanced data challenge directly. Furthermore, in our ensembles, diversity and early stopping were considered to help to reduce the generalization error. We proposed 56 different types of ensembles that permute the support vector machine kernels, genetic selections and diversity. We found that our ensembles, which consider genetic selections and diversity, exhibit competitive performances when compared with various popular classifiers, and for imbalanced data, they outperform most of the considered popular classifiers. We show that using different support vector machine kernels leads to enhanced performances. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that combines adaptive boosted ensembles, genetic selections, and support vector machines. Ramirez-Morales, A.; Salmon-Gamboa, J. Article Host Range Expansion of Nest-Parasitic Moths Pyralis regalis and Hypsopygia mauritialis in Social Wasp Nests: New Findings and Implications for Biological Control Parasitic moths are common in social wasp (Hymenoptera) nests, attacking many species of Polistinae and a few species of Vespinae. In the Republic of Korea, two moth species are known to parasitize the brood of Polistes rothneyi koreanus: Pyralis regalis (Pyralidae) and Anatrachyntis japonica (Cosmopterigidae). Although previously reported elsewhere, a novel case of parasitization was recently documented in the Republic of Korea, in which Hypsopygia mauritialis (Pyralidae) was identified in the nests of social wasps. Pyralis regalis is the most common parasitic moth in the Republic of Korea, feeding on the nests of 11 species of social wasps, mostly the Korean Vespa species. To that list of hosts, we add a species of Dolichovespula and two species of Polistes. Parasitism of Vespa velutina nigrithorax, an invasive alien hornet, by both P. regalis and H. mauritialis, was observed for the first time. However, their potential to control invasive alien hornets is expected to be low. This study provides new insights into the diversity of nest-parasitic moths in social wasp nests and their hosts in the Republic of Korea, and highlights the potential for these moths to impact pest populations. Article Image quality enhancement of 4D light field microscopy via reference impge propagation-based one-shot learning Four-dimensional (4D) light-field (LF) microscopes can acquire 3D information about target objects using a microlens array (MLA). However, the resolution and quality of sub-images in the LF images are reduced because of the spatial multiplexing of rays by the element lenses of the MLA. To overcome these limitations, this study proposes an LF one-shot learning technique that can convert LF sub-images into high-quality images similar to the 2D images of conventional optical microscopes obtained without any external training datasets for image enhancement. The proposed convolutional neural network model was trained using only one training dataset comprising a high-resolution reference image captured without an MLA as the ground truth. Further, its input was the central view of the LF image. After LF one-shot learning, the trained model should be able to convert well the other LF sub-images of various directional views that were not used in the main training process. Therefore, novel learning techniques were designed for LF one-shot learning. These novel techniques include an autoencoder-based model initialization method, a feature map-based learning algorithm to prevent the overfitting of the model, and cut loss to prevent saturation. The experimental results verified that the proposed technique effectively enhances the LF image quality and resolution using a reference image. Moreover, this method enhances the resolution by up to 13 times, decreases the noise amplification effect, and restores the lost details of microscopic objects. The proposed technique is stable and yields superior experimental results compared with those of the existing resolution-enhancing methods. Article Case report: Early carotid stent shortening in patient with radiation-induced carotid stenosis Carotid artery stenting (CAS) for carotid stenosis has been widely used as an alternative treatment in patients not eligible for surgery. The shortening of a carotid stent rarely occurs. We report a case of early shortening of CAS in a patient with radiation-induced carotid stenosis and discuss the potential pathophysiology and strategies for prevention. This case presents a 67-year-old man who underwent radiotherapy for oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma 7 years ago and subsequently developed severe stenosis in the left proximal internal carotid artery. The patient underwent CAS for symptomatic severe carotid stenosis. Follow-up CT angiography revealed shortening of the carotid stent, and additional carotid stenting was performed. We speculate that the possible mechanism of early complication of CAS could be slippage and shortening of the stent due to weak anchoring between the stent strut and the fibrotic arterial wall in radiation-induced carotid stenosis. Article Clustering and prediction of long-term functional recovery patterns in first-time stroke patients ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to cluster long-term multifaceted functional recovery patterns and to establish prediction models for functional outcome in first-time stroke patients using unsupervised machine learning. MethodsThis study is an interim analysis of the dataset from the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation (KOSCO), a long-term, prospective, multicenter cohort study of first-time stroke patients. The KOSCO screened 10,636 first-time stroke patients admitted to nine representative hospitals in Korea during a three-year recruitment period, and 7,858 patients agreed to enroll. Early clinical and demographic features of stroke patients and six multifaceted functional assessment scores measured from 7 days to 24 months after stroke onset were used as input variables. K-means clustering analysis was performed, and prediction models were generated and validated using machine learning. ResultsA total of 5,534 stroke patients (4,388 ischemic and 1,146 hemorrhagic; mean age 63 center dot 31 +/- 12 center dot 86; 3,253 [58.78%] male) completed functional assessments 24 months after stroke onset. Through K-means clustering, ischemic stroke (IS) patients were clustered into five groups and hemorrhagic stroke (HS) patients into four groups. Each cluster had distinct clinical characteristics and functional recovery patterns. The final prediction models for IS and HS patients achieved relatively high prediction accuracies of 0.926 and 0.887, respectively. ConclusionsThe longitudinal, multi-dimensional, functional assessment data of first-time stroke patients were successfully clustered, and the prediction models showed relatively good accuracies. Early identification and prediction of long-term functional outcomes will help clinicians develop customized treatment strategies.
