Article Feasibility of an indocyanine green-hyaluronic acid mixture (LuminoMark™) for targeting suspicious axillary lymph nodes in patients with breast cancer PurposeDuring breast cancer surgery, the use of dyes such as indigo carmine, methylene blue, or indocyanine green (ICG) for targeting axillary lymph nodes (ALNs) under ultrasound guidance can result in rapid diffusion, complicated tissue differentiation, and disruption of staining. LuminoMark (TM), a novel ICG-hyaluronic acid mixture, can provide real-time visualization and minimize dye spread, thereby ensuring a clear surgical field. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of LuminoMark (TM) for targeting ALNs in patients with breast cancer.MethodsA total of 13 patients with breast cancer (mean age 56.5 years; 92.3% female) and suspicious ALNs underwent targeted axillary surgery (TAS) with activated charcoal and LuminoMark (TM) injected into the LNs in the surgical field. The clinicopathological variables of the patients and diagnostic performance were assessed. The LNs injected with LuminoMark (TM) were examined for consistency with sentinel LNs (SLNs) and non-SLNs, as well as with charcoal-tattooed LNs.ResultsThe identification of SLNs took approximately 15.6 min from the start of skin incision, and it required 25.6 and 17.7 min, for charcoal-tattooed and LuminoMarkTM-illuminated LNs, respectively. The identification rate was 92.3% with charcoal and 100% with LuminoMark (TM). The concordance rate between LuminoMark (TM) illumination and SLNs was higher than that between charcoal tattooing and SLNs. The concordance rate between the two methods was 76.9% (n = 10). Three months after surgery, the charcoal tattoo remained visible on the skin; however, LuminoMark (TM) was not visible.ConclusionAlthough both methods demonstrated high detection rates, the rate was higher using LuminoMark (TM). As LuminoMark (TM) was administered directly into LNs, this improved the accuracy of identifying LNs. Article Ectopic expression of a thaumatin-like protein impairs the timely deposition and dissolution of callose during microsporogenesis, leading to microspore death and male sterility in Arabidopsis Key messageTwo pollen-preferential thaumatin-like proteins show both common and distinctive expression profiles. Precocious expression of one of them drastically disturbs timely deposition and dissolution of callose during microsporogenesis, leading to microspore death.AbstractThaumatin-like proteins (TLPs), members of the pathogenesis-related protein family 5 (PR-5), are involved in plant defenses against biotic and abiotic stresses through antifungal activity and enhanced tolerance. Accordingly, studies on TLPs have focused on their responses to various pathogens and stresses and on engineering agronomically valuable crops that can be cultivated in suboptimal environments. On the other hand, the role of TLP members in plant development and their genetic regulation remains largely unexplored. Recently, we reported that the generative cell internalization after pollen mitosis I, an essential pollen patterning step for the nonmotile sperm cell delivery through a pollen tube, depends on STICKY GENERATIVE CELL which suppresses callose deposition in the nascent generative cell and interacts with a germline cell preferential GCTLP1 in Arabidopsis. Here, we additionally identified GCTLP2 which is similarly expressed in the germline cells. We generated various transgenic lines and examined their expressions and phenotypes to elucidate GCTLP functions during pollen development. Expression profiles suggest two GCTLP proteins may have common but also distinctive roles during pollen development. Importantly, ectopic expression analyses show that precocious expression of GCTLP2 severely disturbs the timely deposition and degradation of callose during microsporogenesis which is essential to produce viable microspores. Therefore, our study broadens the knowledge of TLP function and callose regulation for successful pollen development in Arabidopsis. Article Dynamic modeling and techno-economic assessment of hybrid renewable energy and thermal storage systems for a net-zero energy greenhouse in South Korea The implementation of hybrid renewable energy and thermal energy storage systems (HRETESSs) in greenhouses holds great promise in terms of greenhouse gas emission reduction, enhanced efficiency, and reliability of agricultural operations. In this study, numerical and experimental studies were conducted on a greenhouse integrated with HRETESSs in South Korea. The system consisted of solar thermal (ST) collectors, photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collectors, thermal energy storage, and heat pump systems. The performance analysis of the HRETESSs in various locations across South Korea was conducted using a validated TRNSYS model, which was calibrated through experimental measurements. RETscreen software was utilized to perform the techno-economic evaluation of the HRETESSs. Across all the cities studied, the HRETESSs achieved an average contribution of 43% and 20% toward meeting the thermal and electrical loads, respectively, resulting in an annual gross reduction of 4326-5157 tons of CO2. Moreover, the heat injection into the borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) from the ST and PVT collectors increases the contribution of the BTES to the greenhouse load. Article Real-world experience of emicizumab prophylaxis in Korean children with severe hemophilia A without inhibitors PurposeHemophilia A is a genetic disorder characterized by a lack of factor VIII (FVIII). Emicizumab, a recombinant humanized bispecific monoclonal antibody, mimics the function of FVIII. In this article, we present data on an initial real-world evaluation of emicizumab use in Korean children with severe hemophilia A without inhibitors.MethodsThis study was conducted from June 2020 to March 2024 at 4 centers in Korea. The participants were pediatric patients with severe hemophilia A without inhibitors who had received emicizumab treatment for over 6 months. The mean and median annualized bleeding rates (ABRs) and mean and median annual joint bleeding rates (AJBRs) were compared.ResultsEach of the 21 patients in the study received an emicizumab loading regimen of 3 mg/kg weekly for 4 weeks, followed by a modified maintenance regimen of which 2 patients (9.5%) received a 1.5 mg/kg weekly dose, 3 patients (14.3%) received a 6 mg/kg dose every 4 weeks, and the remaining 16 patients (76.2%) received a 3 mg/kg dose every 2 weeks. Before emicizumab prophylaxis initiation, the mean and median ABRs for all patients were 7.04 (SD +/- 5.83) and 6.52 (range 0-21.74), respectively. After receiving emicizumab treatment, the mean and mediam ABRs decreased to 0.41 and zero, respectively. Additionally, 85.7% of the patients achieved no bleeding events within 6 months of starting the treatment.ConclusionThese first real-world data in Korea indicate that emicizumab is effective and safe for pediatric patients with severe hemophilia A without inhibitors. Article Effects of the major metal components in urban Asian PM2.5 on lung inflammation and abnormal electrolyte levels: an in vivo study based on review data Fine particulate matter (PM) 2.5 contains metals, ions, and carbon compounds, varying dynamically due to environmental factors. This study identified five major metals (Ca, Fe, Al, Zn and Pb) in urban PM2.5 via meta-analysis and evaluated their hazardous effects on health. Mice were exposed to these metals through intratracheal instillation, revealing changes in white blood cell count and serum substances (bilirubin, BUN and LDH), along with lung inflammation. Increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1b, IL-6 and TNF-alpha) were observed, indicating adverse effects on the respiratory system. These results suggest that further studies on the health effects of the major metals of PM2.5, development of indicators for determining the PM2.5 exposure levels, and methods for reducing the metals together with other components in PM2.5 are needed. Article Molecular Orientation and Thermal Conductivity in Liquid Crystalline Epoxy Resins by Anionic Ring-Opening Polymerization High thermal conductivity polymers attract significant scientific interest for their potential in various fields. However, practical applications remain limited due to their insufficient performance. Liquid crystalline epoxy resins (LCEs) exhibit high thermal conductivity due to a well-aligned molecular orientation and strong intermolecular interactions. In this study, we demonstrated BPR n as a novel LCE system for improving thermal conductivity through enhanced molecular orientation. The BPR n was designed by introducing various alkyl chains into the biphenyl moiety, and anionic ring-opening polymerization was carried out by using 2-methylimidazole as the curing agent. Thermal properties were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (DMA), and thermal conductivity measurements. The microstructure of BPR n was examined through polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray scattering analysis. Changes in physical properties, including orientation structures with varying chain lengths, were investigated, and the potential of electronic materials was confirmed based on thermal conductivity. BPR8, with the longest alkyl spacer, showed a significantly high thermal conductivity (0.53 W/mK). The temperature change of BPR n on a 150 degrees C hot plate was observed by using a thermal imaging camera to demonstrate the practical improvement in thermal conductivity. Article Development of nanoscale uniform hexagonal zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF-8) for the degradation of CAP and 5-FLU anticancer drugs Efficiently removing pharmaceutical pollutants poses a significant challenge for traditional sewage treatment systems. This study presents the synthesis of Zeolitic Imidazole Framework (ZIF-8) using various solvents, including deionized water (DI), isopropyl alcohol (IPA), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), acetone (ACE), and methanol (MeOH), to degrade two anticancer drugs, 5-fluorouracil (5-FLU) and capecitabine (CAP), under visible light within 80 and 70 min, respectively. Optimized ZIF-8 synthesized using MeOH exhibits uniform hexagonal morphology at the nanoscale and a larger surface area, which, along with its interactions, establishes a synergistic reinforcing mechanism. This mechanism facilitates improved access to reactive sites, enhances the diffusion of pollutants and oxidants, improves charge separation capability, and boosts light utilization efficiency. Consequently, the degradation rates of 5-FLU and CAP approached approximately 99.7 % and 97.9 % following 80 and 70 min of visible light exposure at a pH of 7 in the presence of ZIF-8 (MeOH), indicating superior photocatalytic activity. The studied ZIF-8 (MeOH) system demonstrates excellent stability, maintaining appreciable performance even under visible light for about 70 min. The predominant active species, potential decomposition pathways of CAP and 5-FLU, and the underlying reaction mechanism of the ZIF-8 (MeOH) system under visible light have been thoroughly investigated. This research significantly advances the integration of photocatalysis technology, unlocking its tremendous potential in environmental restoration. Article Fabrication of Sm2(WO4)3/g-C3N4 heterojunction for boosting photodegradation of methyl parathion and ofloxacin: Characteristics, mechanism insight and pathways This paper describes a novel Sm-2(WO4)(3)@g-C3N4(SmW@CN) heterojunction photocatalyst system thatwas fabricated viaa simple hydrothermal route and followed by ultrasonic treatment. The crystallographic properties, physicochemical parameters, morphological features, and optical information were confirmed byP-XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, XPS, BET, UV-DRS, and PL analysis. The SmW@CN shows fabulous photodegradation activity against hazardous methyl parathion (MP) and ofloxacin (OFX) under visible light. Energy gap values of g-C3N4, Sm-2(WO4)(3) and SmW@CN are 2.7, 3.3 and 2.6 eV respectively. The investigation finds that, the specific surface area of the SmW@CN nanocomposite could reach 31.5 m(2)g(-1) when its mass ratio of g-C3N4 and Sm-2(WO4)(3) is 8.6 m(2)g (-1).The complete degradation of MPand OFX was achieved within 80 and 40 min of irradiation, respectively. Interestingly, the enhanced photocatalytic properties could be attributed to the synergetic effects of Sm-2(WO4)(3) and g-C(3)N(4)whichinhibits the rapid recombination of e(-) h(+)charge carriers at the interface of the photocatalyst. The oxidative radicals quenching experiment portrayed the O-2(center dot-) and (OH)-O-center dot radicals that play a critical role in the photodegradation process. Furthermore, the tentative photocatalytic mechanism of SmW@CN heterojunction was ultimately provided in detail. Lastly, a feasible charge separation pathway was suggested to explain the development of the reactive oxidative species and GCMS- analysis was utilized to track the photodegradation process of OFX. In addition, catalyst laid out excellent durability over a cycle of 5th consecutively runs exhibiting only 12% reduction resulting from the fifth cycle. This work depicts versatility of the SmW@CN composite with its ability to perform photocatalysis adaptability in terms of detoxifying both organic and inorganic contaminants in waste water treatment. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated through a combination of NMR, HR-MS, and ECD spectroscopy analyses, and reported data in the literature. The inhibitory activities of the isolated compounds (1-22) against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) and alpha-glucosidase were assessed. Notably, new compounds 14 and 16 exhibited potent inhibitions of both PTP1B and alpha-glucosidase. The enzyme kinetics analysis was conducted to understand the inhibition mode and inhibitory constants of compounds 14 and 16 for the inhibition of PTP1B and alpha-glucosidase. Additionally, molecular docking simulations revealed the binding mechanisms and interactions of these compounds with the target enzymes. Our findings suggest that secondary metabolites from H. dulcis fruits are promising natural product treatments for type 2 diabetes. Article Inhibitory effects of phenylpropanoids and lignans isolated from the bark of Cinnamomum cassia L. on soluble epoxide hydrolase: Spectroscopic, kinetic, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics studies Cinnamomum cassia L., commonly known as cinnamon, is a widely used aromatic spice and medicinal plant with a rich history of culinary and therapeutic applications. In this study, a new phenylpropanoid, named di(1,3dioxane)cassin A (4), and 13 known compounds (1-3, 5-14), were isolated from the bark of C. cassia. Their structures were successfully elucidated using modern spectroscopic techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. In addition, isolated compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory effects on soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). Compound 4 exhibited sEH inhibition with an IC50 value of 28.80 mu M. Enzyme kinetics experiment indicated that compound 4 acted as a competitive sEH inhibitor. In silico methods, including molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations, were employed to determine and understand the binding mechanism and dynamics behavior of this active compound with sEH. Article Investigation of the inhibitory activity of triterpenoids isolated from Actinidia polygama stems against /?-glucuronidase via enzyme kinetics, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics analyses Actinidia polygama, well-known for its traditional medicinal properties, has garnered significant attention due to its distinctive chemical composition. In this study, we isolated and structurally elucidated 11 known compounds, including a monoterpene glycoside ( 1 ), eight triterpenoids ( 2 - 9 ), and two lignan glycosides ( 10 and 11 ), from A. polygama stems. Notably, the inhibitory activity of these compounds on /?- glucuronidase activity was evaluated for the first time. Our results show that 2a,3a,24-trihydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid ( 4 ), strongly inhibited /?- glucuronidase (IC 50 = 14.36 +/- 0.42 mu M) to a degree much higher than that of the positive control ( D -saccharic acid 1,4-lactone, DSA; IC 50 = 16.30 +/- 0.21 mu M). Furthermore, the results of an enzyme kinetics analysis indicate that compound 4 acts as a non-competitive inhibitor of /?- glucuronidase. Finally, the findings from molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the inhibition mode of compound 4 , its interaction with the allosteric site of /?- glucuronidase, and the stability of the complex in the bound state. Article Phenolic compounds from the stems of Zanthoxylum piperitum and their inhibition of β-glucuronidase: Enzyme kinetics, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics analysis Zanthoxylum piperitum , commonly known as Japanese pepper, is a versatile plant from the Rutaceae family that has attracted significant scientific research interest due to its culinary and medical applications. Herein, we present a phytochemical investigation of Z. piperitum stems, leading to the isolation and characterization of a new compound, zanthopiperitol ( 1 ), along with four known phenolic compounds ( 2 - 5 ). Among them, ailanthoidiol ( 2 ) demonstrated potent fl -glucuronidase inhibition with an IC 50 of 68.39 +/- 2.29 mu M. The results of an enzyme kinetics analysis suggest that it acts as a competitive inhibitor of fl -glucuronidase while molecular docking simulation outcomes reveal that it can bind effectively to key amino acid residues in the main catalytic binding site of fl -glucuronidase. Moreover, the strong stability of compound 2 bound to the enzyme binding site is indicated via a 100-ns molecular dynamics simulation study. This study highlights the potential of exploiting naturally occurring fl -glucuronidase inhibitors such as ailanthoidiol for treating various gastrointestinal health issues. Article Tool wear evolution and chip formation of the Ti-6Al-4V end milling under cryogenic cooling and minimum quantity lubrication conditions Chip formation is dependent on the machining environment and is a major factor representing machining characteristics. This paper experimentally investigates the influence of cryogenic cooling and minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) on chip formation during titanium milling and their effects on tool wear and cutting force. Chip segmentation, shear angle, grain size, and compositions were evaluated according to the tool wear evolution. An application of cryoMQL strategy, which means the use of cryogenic cooling and MQL simultaneously, delayed the time of chip serration; serrated chips appeared at long machining distances compared to the dry machining. Then, the cryoMQL machining increased the shear angle and decreased grain size and oxygen atomic percentage. The phenomena represented occurrences of effective cooling and lubrication and reduced the tool flank wear length and the resultant force by 56.5% and 13.5%, respectively, compared to dry condition. The improvement in machinability was more remarkable in the cryoMQL condition than in the condition where cryogenic cooling and MQL were separately applied. Review Catalytic Approaches to Tackle Mixed Plastic Waste Challenges: A Review Plastics are widely used materials in our daily lives and various industries due to their affordability and versatility. The massive production of plastic waste, however, has recently emerged as a pressing environmental concern across all media. To address this, emerging technologies are being explored for the sustainable valorization of postconsumer plastic wastes including thermochemical, physical, and catalytic processes aimed at transforming them into higher value-added products. However, the chemical recycling of mixed plastic wastes poses a formidable challenge due to the diverse array of monomers and catalyst systems involved, each employing distinct mechanisms. Complicating matters further is that contaminants reduce catalytic efficacy, requiring rigorous and labor-intensive separation and purification processes to extract individual plastic streams from practical plastic waste mixtures. Consequently, the majority of such mixtures often end up in incineration and landfills, perpetuating environmental and societal challenges, such as leachate, carbon dioxide emissions, and other air pollutants. This review will introduce current technical developments available for recycling practical plastic waste mixtures through catalytic processes. The current challenges in process performance, low selectivity of the desired products, and catalyst deactivation from the catalysis of plastic waste mixtures are also discussed. Promising approaches to overcome the problems are suggested in future research directions.
