Article Delayed Model Matching of Asynchronous Sequential Machines With Discrepancy in the Initial State Model matching for asynchronous sequential machines (ASMs) is to design a corrective controller so as to match the stable-state behavior of the closed-loop system to that of a reference model. In this paper, we discuss the model matching problem for ASMs with discrepancy in the initial state. Owing to a lot of practical constraints, the controlled ASM may not commence its operation at the same initial state as the model, leading to initial model mismatch. We investigate under which condition an appropriate corrective controller can be designed that solves initial model mismatch. If such a condition is not valid, we address delayed model matching in which the closed-loop system is controlled to be stably equivalent with the model within an allowable delay-bound from the initial operation. FPGA experiments on an asynchronous error counter are provided to show the applicability of the proposed control scheme. Article Design of Integral Sliding Mode Control Using Decoupled Disturbance Compensator with Mismatched Disturbances This paper deals the problem of integral sliding mode control using decoupled disturbance compensator for discrete-time systems with mismatched disturbances. The proposed method allows the disturbance compensation to be modified separately from the control input, since the two inputs of system are completely decoupled. In the developed method, the actual disturbance is estimated by the decoupled disturbance compensator (DDC) method to design the control input and stabilize the system. Integral sliding mode control with DDC scheme minimizes the control effort and improves the system performance. Main advantage of this method is to eliminate the reaching phase and reduce the control effort, simultaneously. Finally, simulation results are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of the presented methodology. Article High-precision Underwater 3D Mapping Using Imaging Sonar for Navigation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicle This study proposes a method for generating a high-precision three-dimensional (3D) map using two-dimensional (2D) sonar images from an imaging sonar installed on an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The 2D sonar image sequence was analyzed pairwise to estimate the amount of displacement and used to create a 2D mosaic sonar image. The mosaic sonar map contains intensity information in a wide area and precise shape information but has no height information. To overcome this limitation, we can generate a 3D point cloud from 2D sonar image sequences. This method takes advantage of the mobility of the AUV to reconstruct the height information and partially solves the ambiguity issues in the imaging sonar's elevation angle. The height map generated from the 3D point cloud contains height information of a wide area, but the shape information is inaccurate. By fusing two maps to complement each other's imperfections, we can generate a precise 3D sonar map. This map enables the AUV to estimate the pose and recognize the surrounding environment. We verified the proposed method by conducting experiments in an indoor water tank. After placing various objects on the floor, the AUV with the imaging sonar scanned the floor and objects to generate a 3D sonar map. Article Machine Learning-based Automatic Optical Inspection System with Multimodal Optical Image Fusion Network This paper proposes an automatic cast product surface defect detection system based on deep learning artificial intelligence technology. Application of deep learning is difficult because of the uneven surface and small defects of the cast product which are easily affected by the lighting position and angle. Therefore, three channel fusion data from an optical system that simultaneously acquires a 2D surface image and 3D shape information of the target object were obtained and used for deep learning. The mean average precision (mAP) of the proposed defect detection model using the three-channel fusion data is about 77%. And this result is greater than the 60% mAP of a defect detection model that uses single-channel data. For further optimization, we investigate a deep learning model that employs a deep learning network with multiple models, where each model trains and detects only a single type of defect. Article Comparing the Reading Behaviours of Students with High- and Low-Level Comprehension of Scientific Terms by Eye Movement Analysis Poor comprehension of specialised terminology presents a significant obstacle that impedes students' ability to learn science. The present study examined the influences of scientific terminology comprehension on students' cognitive processes during science-text reading. We used eye-tracking tests to examine science-text reading behaviours among 663 South Korean middle school students in the seventh through ninth grades and compared quantitative differences in eye movement between students with high and low scientific terminology comprehension levels. The results of eye-tracking tests, comprehension assessments, and a questionnaire measuring participants' familiarity with scientific terminology showed that students with low-level comprehension were less skilful at reading science texts, paid more attention to everyday words and less attention to scientific terms, and did not engage in repeated reading. Conversely, high-comprehension students engaged in longer and more repeated reading of unfamiliar terms. This study presents empirical evidence that the comprehension of scientific terminology is a primary factor influencing difficulties in science reading and learning. The findings suggest the need for teachers to assess students' comprehension of scientific terminology and devote more time to explicit teaching of such specialised vocabulary. Article Frequency-Locked RF Power Oscillator With 43-dBm Output Power and 58% Efficiency This article presents the frequency-locked high-power RF oscillator using a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) amplifier and phase-locked loop (PLL) for 2.4-GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band applications. The proposed architecture exploits the GaN power amplifier in the positive-feedback loop, whereas the desired phase shift for the target oscillating frequency is regulated from the PLL. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to employ the frequency locking scheme for a high-power solid-state RF oscillator. A detailed analysis of the oscillation conditions and the efficiency is provided. The prototype circuit is implemented with hybrid phase shifters and a fractional-N frequency synthesizer. The implemented RF oscillator circuit operates from 2.3 to 2.575 GHz and achieves a low phase noise of -131.8 dBc/Hz at a 1-MHz offset frequency. The power efficiency of the proposed oscillator reaches 58%, and the PLL incurs only 0.2% efficiency degradation. Article Infant with early onset bilateral facial and bulbar weakness: Successful treatment of riboflavin in multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency caused by biallelic nonsense FLAD1 variants Multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is a heterogeneous group of inborn error of metabolic disease affecting the oxidation of fatty acids and amino acids, and choline metabolism. Genes involved in electrons transfer to the mitochondrial respiratory chain typically induce MADD. Recently, FLAD1, which encodes flavin adenine dinucleotide synthase, has also been reported as a cause of MADD. Here, we present a case of a 28-month girl with progressive weakness in facial and bulbar muscle. She has been suffering from feeding difficulty and recurrent respiratory distress. Lipid storage myopathy was evident from muscle biopsy. Furthermore, whole exome sequencing identified homozygous variant of c.745C > T (p.Arg249 *) in FLAD1, confirming the diagnosis of FLAD1-related MADD. The patient showed improvements in her symptoms and exhibited catch-up growth following the supplementation of riboflavin. Lipid storage myopathy with FLAD1-related MADD is potentially treatable. Therefore, we should have high clinical suspicion, even though the diagnosis is challenging. (C) 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V. Article Capping protein regulator and myosin 1 linker 3 regulates transcription of key cytokines in activated phagocytic cells We have recently reported that capping protein regulator and myosin 1 linker 3 (CARMIL3), first identified as an oncofetal-like gene, is required for metastasis of breast and prostate cancer cells via regulating the actin cytoskeletal dynamics near the plasma membrane. Here, we demonstrate a novel function of CARMIL3 as an essential regulator of the transcription of several key proinflammatory cytokines in macrophages engulfing apoptotic cells and/or exposed to lipopolysaccharides (LPS). CARMIL3-deficient macrophages expressed strongly abrogated levels of interleukin (IL)-6, TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-23 in response to LPS, whereas IL-10 expression was enhanced. An RNA-seq analysis of CARMIL3-deficient and wild-type (WT) RAW264.7 cells stimulated with LPS revealed many differentially expressed genes, impacting several important inflammatory pathways. At the molecular level, CARMIL3 deficiency caused a strong impairment in LPS-activated nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B) signaling with decreased IKK alpha/beta and I kappa B alpha phosphorylation and severely reduced p65 protein levels. This study uncovers a crucial role of CARMIL3 in impacting the balance between inflammation and tissue homeostasis via regulating major cytokines production in phagocytic cells. Article Clonal change of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates in a Korean hospital The expansion of specific carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) clones is a global concern due to its therapeutic difficulty and epidemicity. To understand the prevalence of CRAB isolates in a Korean hospital, we investigated the epidemiological characteristics of 96 CRAB isolates between 2016 and 2018, including the sequence types (STs), antimicrobial susceptibility, and genetic background of resistance to carbapenems and aminoglycosides. Six STs were identified using the Oxford multilocus sequence typing scheme; ST191 (n = 8), ST208 (n = 12), ST229 (n = 11), and ST369 (n = 21) were previously identified clones in the study hospital, whereas gpi variants of ST208, ST451 (n = 34) and ST784 (n = 10), were emerging clones. ST208 isolates exhibited higher resistance rates to minocycline than other ST isolates, whereas ST369 isolates exhibited lower resistance rates to aminoglycosides and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole than other ST isolates. All CRAB isolates previously isolated in the study hospital carried ISAbaI-blaOXA-23 for carbapenem resistance, but 10 ST229 isolates carried only ISAbaI-blaOXA-51. The carriage of armA was lower in ST369 isolates (38%) than in other ST isolates (>= 83%). The frequency and diversity of aminoglycoside-modifying enzyme genes were decreased among the CRAB isolates between 2016 and 2018 compared with CRAB isolates between 2013 and 2015 at the study hospital. In conclusion, clonal complex 208 CRAB isolates are predominant in the study hospital. This study demonstrates the evolutionary change of CRAB isolates in the study hospital in relation to the emergence of new STs and selection of resistant genes. Article Silver nanoparticles-induced H2O2 triggers apoptosis-like death and is associated with dinF in Escherichia coli Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are the most widely used nanomaterials as antimicrobial agents. AgNPs have been shown to inhibit the growth of and induce apoptosis-like death in Escherichia coli. However, the precise mechanism of AgNPs-induced apoptosis-like death and association with DNA damage-inducible protein F (dinF), a gene of SOS response, is unknown. Here, AgNPs-contributing depletion of intracellular glutathione levels and deactivation of glutathione peroxidase were shown. This step, indicating disruption of the antioxidant system, resulted in overall oxidative stress. Furthermore, DNA oxidation was accompanied, leading to DNA fragmentation. In addition, AgNPs appeared to induce apoptosis-like death via the SOS response. We used sodium pyruvate - an H2O2 quencher - to study the contribution of H2O2, which showed attenuation of AgNPs-induced DNA damage, SOS response, and apoptosis-like death. In dinF mutant, the strain showed a higher degree of DNA damage and apoptotic features. In conclusion, AgNPs mediate apoptosis-like cell death by H2O2-induced oxidative DNA damage. Furthermore, our result demonstrates that dinF participates in this process, which further supports that AgNPs induces SOS response. Our findings may contribute to expanding the new applications of AgNP-based nanomaterials in biomedical fields. Article Estimating blue carbon accumulated in a halophyte community using UAV imagery: a case study of the southern coastal wetlands in South Korea Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery is considered the best approach to acquire high-resolution data over a large area in a short time, such as in the case of coastal wetlands comprising small-sized patches of perennial plants. However, to the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have used UAV imagery to quantitatively estimate blue carbon in coastal wetlands. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the area-wide carbon stocks accumulated in halophyte habitats through the case studies of the southern coastal wetlands in South Korea using UAV imagery. Accordingly, object-based image analysis was used to identify the spatial distribution of major halophytes based on the spectral reflectance derived from multispectral UAV images. Elemental analysis (EA) was performed to estimate the content of organic carbon accumulated in individual halophytes, and the halophyte communities identified in the case study area were confirmed to have accumulated 20.80 MgC of blue carbon. These results demonstrate that applying EA to UAV images can be an innovative method to solve the spatial uncertainty encountered in the monitoring of blue carbon in existing field-based surveys and traditional remote sensing. Article Sex differences in the association between the APOEε4 allele and hearing impairment: A longitudinal memory clinic study Background: The APOE epsilon 4 allele and hearing impairment are risk factors for dementia. Cross-sectional studies have shown controversial findings regarding the relationship between APOE epsilon 4 and hearing impairment. These may be explained by reported sex differences in the association between APOE epsilon 4 and some Alzheimer's disease biomarkers. We aimed to investigate APOE epsilon 4 and hearing impairment in a longitudinal setting considering the modifying effects of sex on APOE epsilon 4. Methods: In total, 1810 subjects with APOE genotype at Ilsan Hospital memory clinics were linked to the longitudinal National Health Insurance Service database with International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th revision (ICD-10) diagnosis codes of hearing impairment. After excluding cases with prevalent hearing impairment and incomplete records, 1092 subjects were analyzed for the period January 2004-July 2019. We used Cox proportional hazard models with or without adjustment for education, hypertension, diabetes, and cognitive function. Effect modification was analyzed by sex stratification and by adding APOE epsilon 4 by sex interaction terms. Results: Hearing impairment did not differ between APOE epsilon 4 carriers and non-carriers. Sex-stratification analysis with an unadjusted model showed men with APOE epsilon 4 developed more hearing impairment than men without (HR 1.90, 95% CI 1.20-3.01), but women did not. The results remained similar in covariate-adjusted models. The interaction between APOE epsilon 4 and sex was also significant regardless of adjustment. Conclusions: Our longitudinal analyses suggested male memory clinic visitors with APOE epsilon 4 allele were more likely to develop hearing impairment than those without the genotype. This group may benefit more from regular monitoring and preventive measures for hearing impairment. Article Assessing the risk of recurrence of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in affected farms on Jeju Island, South Korea Background: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is a swine enteropathogenic coronavirus that has devastated the swine industry in South Korea over the last 30 years. The lack of an effective method to control the endemics has led to a surge in PEDV recurrences in affected farms throughout the country. Objectives: In the first step toward establishing systematic monitoring of and active control measures over the swine populations, we constructed an assessment model that evaluates the status of (1) biosecurity, (2) herd immunity, and (3) virus circulation in each of the PEDV-infected farms. Methods: A total of 13 farrow-to-finish pig farms with a history of acute PEDV infection on Jeju Island were chosen for this study. The potential risk of the recurrence in these farms was estimated through on-site data collection and laboratory examination. Results: Overall, the data indicated that a considerable number of the PEDV-infected farms had lax biosecurity, achieved incomplete protective immunity in the sows despite multi-dose vaccination, and served as incubators of the circulating virus; thus, they face an increased risk of recurrent outbreaks. Intriguingly, our results suggest that after an outbreak, a farm requires proactive tasks, including reinforcing biosecurity, conducting serological and virus monitoring to check the sows' immunity and to identify the animals exposed to PEDV, and improving the vaccination scheme and disinfection practices if needed. Conclusions: The present study highlights the significance of coordinated PEDV management in infected farms to reduce the risk of recurrence and further contribute towards the national eradication of PEDV. Article Metastasis prognostic factors and cancer stem cell-related transcription factors associated with metastasis induction in canine metastatic mammary gland tumors Background: Canine mammary gland tumor (MGT) is the most common cancer in aged female dogs. Although it's important to identify reliable metastasis or prognostic factors by evaluating related to cell division, adhesion, and cancer stem cell-related transcription factor (TF) in metastasis-induced canine MGT, but there are limited studies. Objectives: We aimed to identify metastasis prognostic factors and cancer stem cell-TFs in canine MGTs. Methods: Age-matched female dogs diagnosed with MGT only were classified into metastatic and non-metastatic groups by histopathological staining of MGT tissues. The mRNA levels of cancer prognostic metastasis molecular factors (E-cadherin, ICAM-1, PRR14, VEGF, HPRT1, RPL4 and hnRNP H) and cancer stem cell-related TFs (Oct4, Sox2, and Nanog) were compared between metastatic and non-metastatic canine MGT tissues using qRT-PCR analysis. Results: The mRNA levels of ICAM-1, PRR14, VEGF, hnRNP H, Oct4, Sox2, and Nanog in metastatic MGT group were significantly higher than those in non-metastatic MGT group. However, mRNA level of RPL4 was significantly lower in metastatic MGT group. Loss of E-cadherin and HPRT1 was observed in the metastatic MGT group but it was not significant. Conclusions: Consistent expression patterns of all metastasis-related factors showing elevation in ICAM-1, PRR14, VEGF, hnRNP H, Oct4, Sox2, and Nanog, but decreases in RPL4 levels occurred in canine MGT tissues, which was associated with metastasis. Thus, these cancer prognostic metastasis factors and TFs of cancer stem cells, except for E-cadherin and HPRT1, can be used as reliable metastasis factors for canine MGT and therapeutic strategy. Article Molecular characteristics of Escherichia coli from bulk tank milk in Korea Background: Escherichia coli, which causes subclinical or clinical mastitis in cattle, is responsible for transmitting antimicrobial resistance via human consumption of raw milk or raw milk products. Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the molecular characteristics of 183 E. coli from bulk tank milk of five different dairy factories in Korea. Methods: The molecular characteristics of E. coli such as serogroup, virulence, antimicrobial resistance, and integron genes were detected using polymerase chain reaction and antimicrobial susceptibility were tested using the disk diffusion test. Results: In the distribution of phylogenetic groups, group D was the most prevalent (59.6%) and followed by group B1 (25.1%). The most predominant serogroup was O173 (15.3%), and a total of 46 different serotypes were detected. The virulence gene found most often was fimH(73.2%), and stx1, fimH, incC, fyuA, and iutA genes were significantly higher in isolates of phylogenetic group B1 compared to phylogenetic groups A, B2, and D (p < 0.05). Among 64 E. coli isolates that showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial, the highest resistance rate was observed for tetracyclines (37.5%). All 18 integron-positive E. coli carried the integron class I (int1) gene, and three different gene cassette arrangements, dfrA12+aadA2 (2 isolates), aac(6)-Ib3+aac(6′)-Ib-cr+aadA4 (2 isolates), and dfrA17+aadA5 (1 isolate) were detected. Conclusions: These data suggest that the E. coli from bulk tank milk can be an indicator for dissemination of antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors via cross-contamination. © 2021.
