| ○ | ○ | Article | A New Approach: Ethyl Formate Fumigation to Control Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in a Yellow Melon Vinyl House | Featured Application A new fumigation approach of ethyl formate in a vinyl house to control B. tabaci. Due to concerns over the resistance development to existing pesticides, chemical poisoning among farmers, and chemical residue on crops, sprung up a growing need to develop new pest control strategies for utilization in protected houses in Korea. A series of experiments tested a new technology using a fumigant, ethyl formate, in growing crops in the protected houses. It was revealed that the glasshouse was inadequate for the fumigation system using the fumigant since ethyl formate gas sharply decreased due to gas leaking through the gaps between the glass frames. On the other hand, the gas concentration was stable during the fumigation process. Experiments were also conducted to evaluate its phytotoxicity on cucurbits crops (yellow melon). The crops were fumigated at 20 degrees C in three fumigation schedules (2, 4, and 12 h). The results revealed that the developmental stages of yellow melon showed no sign of phytotoxicity in all conditions. However, the fumigation damaged the shoots of red pepper in higher humidity and at a longer duration. Interestingly, Bemisia tabaci were (100%) completely killed in all these conditions. Based on the results of the above experiments on the high efficacy on the control of Bemisia tabaci and zero phytotoxic effects of the ethyl formate fumigation on yellow melon, verification experiments for the effectiveness were conducted thrice in farmer's yellow melon vinyl houses and once in a farmer's cucumber vinyl house. Results demonstrated that ethyl formate fumigation for 2 h at 2 g m(-3) concentration could 100% kill the adults of Bemisia tabaci with no phytotoxic effect on the crops. Therefore, we could conclude that the 2-h fumigation system with 2 g m(-3) ethyl formate would be a new alternative to the existing chemical spraying methods. | Kwon, Tae Hyung; Park, Chung Gyoo; Lee, Byung-Ho; Jeong, In-Hong; Lee, Sung-Eun | Gyeongsang Natl Univ, Inst Life Sci, Div Appl Life Sci, BK21 Program, Jinju 52828, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Inst Evaluat Safety & Qual Agr Prod, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Rural Dev Adm, Natl Inst Agr Sci, Wonju 55365, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Appl Biosci, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Integrat Biol, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Jeong, In-Hong/IVV-7943-2023 | 57215832186; 24758926600; 57202841615; 35794422200; 55890041600 | xoxogudgud@naver.com;parkcg@gnu.ac.kr;byungholee@knu.ac.kr;ihjeong1@korea.kr;selpest@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 10 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.35 | 2025-06-25 | 3 | 4 | Bemisia tabaci; cucurbits; ethyl formate; fumigation; vinyl house | METHYL-BROMIDE; RESISTANCE; MORTALITY; BIOTYPES | Bemisia tabaci; cucurbits; ethyl formate; fumigation; vinyl house | English | 2022 | 2022-05 | 10.3390/app12105173 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | A Novel, Automated, and Real-Time Method for the Analysis of Non-Human Primate Behavioral Patterns Using a Depth Image Sensor | By virtue of their upright locomotion, similar to that of humans, motion analysis of non-human primates has been widely used in order to better understand musculoskeletal biomechanics and neuroscience problems. Given the difficulty of conducting a marker-based infrared optical tracking system for the behavior analysis of primates, a 2-dimensional (D) video analysis has been applied. Distinct from a conventional marker-based optical tracking system, a depth image sensor system provides 3-D information on movement without any skin markers. The specific aim of this study was to develop a novel algorithm to analyze the behavioral patterns of non-human primates in a home cage using a depth image sensor. The behavioral patterns of nine monkeys in their home cage, including sitting, standing, and pacing, were captured using a depth image sensor. Thereafter, these were analyzed by observers' manual assessment and the newly written automated program. We confirmed that the measurement results from the observers' manual assessments and the automated program with depth image analysis were statistically identical. | Han, Sang Kuy; Kim, Keonwoo; Rim, Yejoon; Han, Manhyung; Lee, Youngjeon; Park, Sung-Hyun; Choi, Won Seok; Chun, Keyoung Jin; Lee, Dong-Seok | Korea Inst Ind Technol, Robot R&D Dept, Ansan 15588, South Korea; Korea Res Inst Biosci & Biotechnol KRIBB, Natl Primate Res Ctr, Cheongju 28116, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Life Sci & Biotechnol, BK21 FOUR KNU Creat BioRes Grp, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kinet Lab Inc, Seongnam 13487, South Korea | Park, Junghyung/KXQ-7522-2024; Lee, Youngjeon/LZH-8969-2025 | 8564152300; 57204572034; 57396147200; 57396147300; 57199022088; 57219112045; 57215086073; 7101966874; 57210068061 | shan@kitech.re.kr;nuri0070@kribb.re.kr;yejoon@kineticlab.co.kr;manhyung@kineticlab.co.kr;neurosci@kribb.re.kr;ck2816@kribb.re.kr;ckhoiws@kribb.re.kr;spartan2kr@gmail.com;lee1@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 1 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.09 | 2025-06-25 | 2 | 1 | depth image sensor; behavioral pattern analysis; computer-based analysis; non-human primate study | MODELS | Behavioral pattern analysis; Computer-based analysis; Depth image sensor; Non-human primate study | English | 2022 | 2022-01 | 10.3390/app12010471 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | A Survey on Dynamic Corrective Control of Asynchronous Sequential Machines | As a feedback control methodology exclusively targeting asynchronous sequential machines (ASMs), corrective control has been rapidly developing for the past two decades. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on the theory and application of dynamic corrective control in which the controller also has the form of an ASM. First, basic notions and principles of dynamic corrective control, including models of ASMs and configurations of closed-loop systems, are reviewed. Next, assorted dynamic corrective control schemes are presented aiming at solving specific control problems of ASMs, such as model matching and fault-tolerant control. Variations of control aspects are classified according to modeling formalisms of controlled ASMs-input/state, input/output, and composite ASMs-and involved fault characteristics, such as transient, permanent, and intermittent faults and intelligent attacks. Representative results on the application of fault-tolerant corrective control to real-world engineering systems are also provided with an emphasis on space-borne digital systems. Finally, some challenging topics for future studies on corrective control are discussed. | Yang, Jung-Min; Kwak, Seong-Woo | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Pukyong Natl Univ, Dept Control & Instrumentat Engn, Busan 48513, South Korea | 57208450551; 59816855300 | jmyang@ee.knu.ac.kr;ksw@pknu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 5 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0 | 2025-06-25 | 0 | 0 | asynchronous sequential machines (ASMs); dynamic corrective control; model matching; fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control; space-borne digital systems | SINGLE-EVENT UPSET; OUTPUT-FEEDBACK CONTROL; CYBER-PHYSICAL SYSTEMS; SEMI-TENSOR PRODUCT; FAULT-TOLERANT; INPUT/OUTPUT CONTROL; SERVICE ATTACKS; STATE MACHINE; DESIGN; TRANSIENT | Asynchronous sequential machines (ASMs); Dynamic corrective control; Fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control; Model matching; Space-borne digital systems | English | 2022 | 2022-03 | 10.3390/app12052562 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | A System Architecture of a Fusion System for Multiple LiDARs Image Processing | LiDAR sensors are extensively used in autonomous vehicles and their optimal use is a critical concern. In this paper, we propose an embedded software architecture for multiple LiDAR sensors, i.e., a fusion system that acts as an embedded system for processing data from multiple LiDAR sensors. The fusion system software comprises multiple clients and a single server. The client and server are connected through inter-process communication. Multiple clients create processes to process the data from each LiDAR sensor via a multiprocessing method. Our approach involves a scheduling method for efficient multiprocessing. The server uses multithreading to optimize the internal functions. For internal communication within the fusion system, multiple clients and a single server are connected using the socket method. In sequential processing, the response time increases in proportion to the number of connected LiDAR sensors. By contrast, in the proposed software architecture, the response time decreases in inverse proportion to the number of LiDAR sensors. As LiDAR sensors become increasingly popular in the field of autonomous driving, the results of this study can be expected to make a substantial contribution to technology development in this domain. | Jung, Minwoo; Kim, Dae-Young; Kim, Seokhoon | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Ctr Self Organizing Software, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Soonchunhyang Univ, Dept Comp Software Engn, Asan 31538, South Korea | Kim, Seokhoon/R-5580-2019 | 55517112600; 58378650900; 57215758487 | dyoung.kim@sch.ac.kr;seokhoon@sch.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 19 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.26 | 2025-06-25 | 3 | 3 | fusion system; multiple LiDARs; data processing; embedded software | data processing; embedded software; fusion system; multiple LiDARs | English | 2022 | 2022-10 | 10.3390/app12199421 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | A Two-Step Learning Model for the Diagnosis of Coronavirus Disease-19 Based on Chest X-ray Images with 3D Rotational Augmentation | Herein, we propose a method for effectively classifying normal, coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19), lung opacity, and viral pneumonia symptoms using chest X-ray images. The proposed method comprises a lung detection model, three-dimensional (3D) rotational augmentation, and a two-step learning model. The lung detection model is used to detect the position of the lungs in X-ray images. The lung position detected by the lung detection model is used as the bounding box coordinates of the two-step learning model. The 3D rotational augmentation, which is a data augmentation method based on 3D photo inpainting, solves the imbalance in the amount of data for each class. The two-step learning model is proposed to improve the model performance by first separating the normal cases, which constitute the most data in the X-ray images, from other disease cases. The two-step learning model comprises a two-class model for classifying normal and disease images, as well as a three-class model for classifying COVID-19, lung opacity, and viral pneumonia among the diseases. The proposed method is quantitatively compared with the existing algorithm, and results show that the proposed method is superior to the existing method. | Kwon, Hyuk-Ju; Lee, Sung-Hak | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect & Elect Engn, 80 Deahakro, Daegu 702701, South Korea | 55169908300; 7601395661 | shak2@ee.knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 17 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.26 | 2025-06-25 | 3 | 3 | COVID-19; two-step learning model; deep learning model; data augmentation; 3D photo inpainting | 3D photo inpainting; COVID-19; data augmentation; deep learning model; two-step learning model | English | 2022 | 2022-09 | 10.3390/app12178668 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Square Cylinder with Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines at Corners | A preliminary study is carried out to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a square cylinder with Savonius wind turbines and to explain the reason why this kind of structure can suppress wind-induced vibrations. A series of computational fluid dynamics simulations are performed for the square cylinders with stationary and rotating wind turbines at the cylinder corners. The turbine orientation and the turbine rotation speed are two key factors that affect aerodynamic characteristics of the cylinder for the stationary and rotating turbine cases, respectively. The numerical simulation results show that the presence of either the stationary or rotating wind turbines has a significant effect on wind forces acting on the square cylinder. For the stationary wind turbine cases, the mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients decrease by 37.7% and 90.7%, respectively, when the turbine orientation angle is 45 degrees. For the rotating wind turbine cases, the mean drag and fluctuating lift coefficients decrease by 34.2% and 86.0%, respectively, when the rotation speed is 0.2 times of vortex shedding frequency. Wind turbines installed at the corners of the square cylinder not only enhance structural safety but also exploit wind energy simultaneously. | Wang, Zhuoran; Hu, Gang; Zhang, Dongqin; Kim, Bubryur; Xu, Feng; Xiao, Yiqing | Harbin Inst Technol, Sch Civil & Environm Engn, Shenzhen 518055, Peoples R China; Harbin Inst Technol, Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Joint Lab Data Driven F, Shenzhen 518055, Peoples R China; Harbin Inst Technol, Shenzhen Key Lab Intelligent Struct Syst Civil En, Shenzhen 518055, Peoples R China; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Robot & Smart Syst Engn, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | HU, Gang/P-8189-2018; zhang, haifeng/B-3531-2014; Hu, Gang/P-8189-2018; XIAO, YI/MXL-6927-2025 | 57576246100; 56735061500; 57222039982; 57198355299; 56742586700; 7403260236 | 20b954009@stu.hit.edu.cn;hugang@hit.edu.cn;zhangdongqin@hit.edu.cn;brkim@knu.ac.kr;xufenghit@hit.edu.cn;xiaoyq@hit.edu.cn; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 7 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.79 | 2025-06-25 | 9 | 9 | square cylinder; wind turbines; aerodynamic characteristics; vortex shedding | VORTEX-INDUCED VIBRATION; LARGE-EDDY SIMULATION; FLOW; DYNAMICS; WAKE; TURBULENCE; EDGE | aerodynamic characteristics; square cylinder; vortex shedding; wind turbines | English | 2022 | 2022-04 | 10.3390/app12073515 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Algorithm of Smart Building Supervision for Detecting and Counting Column Ties Using Deep Learning | The Building Supervision of South Korea has been developed under the government ' s desire to prevent poor construction and improve the quality of buildings to promote a safer life for the people. Although the building environment of today has been achieved through several improvements, the introduction of such technology is insufficient. Especially since building supervision is primarily carried out almost by manpower, in an era where numerous convergence technologies from the 4th industry are being utilized. Therefore, this study aimed to solve this inefficiency in the building supervision system by using the object detection technology of deep learning in the BIM environment. As a basic study to develop a smart supervision checking system that checks whether the information on the construction site matches the design information, the column ties were selected as a supervision item, and research was conducted. For this, we constructed the tie detection network and suggested an algorithm for information checking between the construction site and BIM environment. Through this, it was possible to confirm the possibility of practical supervision work and improve the efficiency of the work, and furthermore, to see the possibility of using convergence technology. | Kim, Taehoon; Hong, Soonmin; Choo, Seungyeon | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Architecture, 80 Daehak Ro, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Choo, Seungyeon/JFB-0390-2023 | 58260945000; 57734398300; 36835366900 | thlouiskim@gmail.com;soonmin_hong@knu.ac.kr;choo@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 11 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.09 | 2025-06-25 | 1 | 2 | building supervision; deep learning; column ties; checking algorithm; MATLAB | building supervision; checking algorithm; column ties; deep learning; MATLAB | English | 2022 | 2022-06 | 10.3390/app12115535 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Anti-Allergic Effects of Fermented Red Ginseng Marc on 2,4-Dinitrochlorobenzene-Induced Atopic Dermatitis-like Mice Model | Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic and allergic skin disease; however, there is no cure for the disease. Red ginseng is well known to have anti-AD potential, while red ginseng marc (RGM) remaining after ginseng extraction is regarded as useless and discarded. However, it has recently been reported that RGM, particularly fermented RGM (fRGM), still contains bioactive properties. Thus, the anti-allergic effects of fRGM were examined in a 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene-induced AD-like mice model. The model was topically treated with distilled water (control), dexamethasone, or fRGM for six weeks. Treatments of fRGM alleviated skin lesions and reduced serum IgE levels, compared with the control. The fRGM also reduced skin levels of lipid peroxidation and superoxide anion; however, it increased glutathione contents, with downregulated gene expression for inflammatory mediators. Histopathological analyses demonstrated that fRGM suppressed epidermal thickening, collagen deposition, and inflammatory cell and mast cell infiltration, which involved anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-apoptotic effects. Further, fRGM suppressed hypertrophic changes and inflammatory responses in the spleen and lymph nodes. The beneficial effects were observed in the dexamethasone and fRGM groups; however, the antioxidant effects were evident only in the fRGM treatments. These results provide useful information for developing fRGM as a therapeutic source for AD. | Jung, Yeun Soo; Choi, Jae Young; Kwon, Young-Sam; Park, Gyu-Ryeul; Dachuri, VinayKumar; Kim, Young Woo; Ku, Sae-Kwang; Song, Chang-Hyun | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Vet Med, Dept Vet Surg, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Yeungnam Univ, Coll Med, Dept Urol, Daegu 42415, South Korea; Daegu Haany Univ, Dept Anat & Histol, Coll Korean Med, Gyongsan 38610, South Korea; Res Ctr Herbal Convergence Liver Dis, Gyongsan 38610, South Korea; Dongguk Univ, Sch Korean Med, Gyeongju 38066, South Korea | 57560019000; 55722526800; 7403459426; 57221780410; 57189993993; 55699527800; 7006331005; 24403187800 | vetsoo1@hanmail.net;urocjy@ynu.ac.kr;kwon@knu.ac.kr;9027187@dhu.ac.kr;dachurivinay@dhu.ac.kr;ywk@dongguk.ac.kr;gucci200@dhu.ac.kr;dvmsong@dhu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 7 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.17 | 2025-06-25 | 2 | 2 | AD; allergy; skin; DNCB; Panax ginseng; red ginseng marc; fermentation | SKIN-LESIONS; EXTRACT; BARRIER; INSIGHTS; INNATE | AD; allergy; DNCB; fermentation; Panax ginseng; red ginseng marc; skin | English | 2022 | 2022-04 | 10.3390/app12073278 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | Article | Anti-Inflammatory Butenolides from a Marine-Derived Streptomyces sp. 13G036 | Butenolides are a family of lactones containing a double bond and have been frequently found in the extracts of Streptomyces bacterial species with various pharmacological activities. In this study, seven butenolides (1–7) were discovered and isolated from the culture broth of a marine-derived Streptomyces sp. 13G036 based on a molecular networking analysis. Among the seven isolates, compound 7 was first isolated as a natural product in this study. The structures of compounds 1–7 were determined by combined analysis of 1D/2D Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra, Mass Spectrometry (MS) spectra and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data. Compounds 1–6 showed potential anti-inflammatory activities by inhibiting the production of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukine-6 (IL-6) in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages. © 2022 by the authors. | ○ | ○ | Article | Application of Graphene Oxide as a Biomaterial for the Development of Large-Area Cell Culture Vessels | In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was coated on the surface of a large-area polystyrene film using spray coating. To analyze the possibility of developing a large-area cell culture vessel from this material, the mechanical properties of the coated surface as well as the cell compatibility and cell proliferation in the vessel were evaluated. Step measurements confirmed a curve of 100 nm or larger on the cell culture vessel surface. The surface was composed of GO (as determined from Raman spectroscopy) and its measured transmittance was similar to 90% or higher. The coated surface was rendered hydrophilic with an increase in surface energy. Although the cells hardly grew on the general polystyrene film, they attached and proliferated on the polystyrene film coated with GO. Zero cytotoxicity was reported, particularly in the sample that was spray-coated three times at 93.75 mm/s. Note that the cell viability was 1.43 times higher than that in the conventional cell culture vessel. Economic and efficient large-area cell culture vessels can be developed if the GO coating establishes an appropriate surface roughness and surface energy. | Park, Jae-bum; Park, Dan-bi; Lee, Ji-hoon; Yang, Su-jeong; Lee, Ji-eun; Park, Jin-Kyung; Huh, Jeung-Soo; Lim, Jeong-Ok | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Convergence & Fus Syst Engn, Inst Global Climate Change & Energy, Gajang Dong 386, Sangju 37224, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Joint Inst Regenerat Med, Dongdeok Ro 135, Daegu 41944, South Korea; Corestem Inc, Cent Res Ctr, 255 Pangyo Ro, Seoul 13486, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Kyungpook Natl Univ Hosp, Biomed Res Inst, Joint Inst Regenerat Med,Sch Med, Dongdeok Ro 135, Daegu 41944, South Korea | ; PARK, JIN-KYUNG/I-8716-2017 | 57237034300; 57235629000; 59832369300; 58826107900; 56813161400; 58829173500; 7102258915; 7403454245 | jshuh@knu.ac.kr;jolim@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 22 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.35 | 2025-06-25 | 4 | 4 | graphene oxide; spray coating; large-area coating; cell culture | MECHANICAL-PROPERTIES; ADHESION; POLYMER | cell culture; graphene oxide; large-area coating; spray coating | English | 2022 | 2022-11 | 10.3390/app122211599 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||

Surface functionalization of gold nanoparticles with various ligands modifies the physicochemical properties of the surface, thereby improving the biocompatibility and uptake efficiency of a living system. Tiopronin, one of the most commonly used ligands for gold nanoparticles, has both thiol and carboxyl functional groups that can be easily attached to various biomolecules. However, the conventional method of synthesizing tiopronin-capped gold nanoclusters using methanol and acetic acid as a solvent requires a laborious and time-consuming dialysis process to remove methanol and acetic acid. In this study, we demonstrate a novel and simple aqueous synthesis method to obtain tiopronin-capped gold nanoclusters/nanoparticles with precise size control in the sub-nanometer to nanometer range. The main advantage of our synthesis method is that it does not require a dialysis process because it uses water as a solvent. The boron byproduct produced during the synthesis can be removed with a simple volatilization process. Moreover, we characterized the physical morphologies, photoelectronic properties, hydrodynamic size, and crystal structure of the tiopronin-capped gold nanoclusters/nanoparticles using transmission electron microscopy, spectrophotometry, fluorescence spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and X-ray diffraction. | Kang, Daekyung; Son, Changhee; Lee, Hakseon; Park, Hongsik; Kim, Taewan; Park, Jonghoo | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Bioconvergence Sci & Technol, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect & Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Jeonbuk Natl Univ, Dept Elect Engn, Jeonju 54896, South Korea; Jeonbuk Natl Univ, Smart Grid Res Ctr, Jeonju 54896, South Korea | 57211869035; 57211868705; 57734054800; 35366976200; 57199878285; 57196408322 | jonghoopark@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 16 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.09 | 2025-06-25 | 1 | 1 | tiopronin-capped gold nanocluster; nanoparticle; ligand deprotonation; fluorescent gold nanoclusters | NANOPARTICLES; CLUSTERS | fluorescent gold nanoclusters; ligand deprotonation; tiopronin-capped gold nanocluster/nanoparticle | English | 2022 | 2022-08 | 10.3390/app12168263 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | ||||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Artocarpesin acts on human platelet aggregation through inhibition of cyclic nucleotides and MAPKs | The cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are becoming a critical threat to our lives in these years. It is now widely accepted that platelets play an important role in cardiovascular disease as they have a fundamental role in thrombosis. Therefore, many drugs or natural substances have been developed to treat CVDs. Cudrania tricuspidata is a regional plant containing various constituents, such as xanthones, flavonoids, organic acids, and polysaccharides. It has been widely used in East Asia as an important ethnomedicine for the treatment of many diseases such as eczema, mumps, tuberculosis and acute arthritis. Therefore, we evaluated antiplatelet effects using artocarpesin isolated from C. tricuspidata. Confirmation of the antiplatelet function of artocarpesin was made according to the following analyzes. Artocarpesin inhibited collagen-induced human platelet aggregation, calcium mobilization, glycoprotein Ilb/IIIa activation and thrombin-induced clot retraction through the regulation of associated signaling molecules. Artocarpesin increased the phosphorylation of vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) and inositol 1, 4, 5-triphosphate receptor I (IP3RI). On the other hand, the phosphorylation of cytosolic phospholipase A(2) (cPLA(2)), mitogen-activated protein kinases p38, JNK and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt decreased. Thus, the study highlights that artocarpesin has an inhibitory effect on platelet activity and thrombus formation, showing its potential value in preventing platelet-induced cardiovascular disease. | Kwon, Hyuk-Woo; Irfan, Muhammad; Lee, Yuan Yee; Rhee, Man Hee; Shin, Jung-Hae | Far East Univ, Dept Biomed Lab Sci, Eumseong 27601, South Korea; Far East Univ, Microbiol Resource Res Inst, Eumseong 27601, South Korea; Univ Illinois, Dept Oral Biol, Chicago, IL 60607 USA; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Coll Vet Med, Dept Vet Med, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Cardiovasc Res Inst, Daegu 41944, South Korea | Yuan Yee, Lee/ABH-8956-2022; Irfan, Muhammad/AAY-1961-2021; Rhee, Man/O-5705-2016 | 55200547400; 35069404400; 57203798815; 57211035357; 56244056800 | mlsjshin@naver.com; | APPLIED BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY | APPL BIOL CHEM | 2468-0834 | 2468-0842 | 65 | 1 | SCIE | FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY | 2022 | 3.2 | 46.1 | 0.16 | 2025-06-25 | 3 | 2 | Artocarpesin; Ca2+ mobilization; Serotonin secretion; alpha IIb/beta 3 affinity; Clot retraction; cAMP and cGMP | ANTIPLATELET; PHOSPHODIESTERASES; GENERATION | Artocarpesin; Ca2+ mobilization; cAMP and cGMP; Clot retraction; Serotonin secretion; αIIb/β3 affinity | Cardiology; Diseases; Enzymes; Nucleotides; Phosphorylation; Artocarpesin; Ca 2+; Ca2+ mobilization; CAMP and cGMP; Cardiovascular disease; Clot retraction; Mobilisation; Platelet aggregation; Serotonin secretion; Αiib/β3 affinity; Platelets | English | 2022 | 2022-12 | 10.1186/s13765-022-00694-x | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |
| ○ | ○ | Article | Automatic Detection of Construction Workers' Helmet Wear Based on Lightweight Deep Learning | Featured Application The proposed approach has the advantage of low running cost, high accuracy, and real-time applicability to real-world environments. This work provides new ideas for algorithm development and lightweight modeling research for construction automation applications. To reduce the risk of head trauma to workers working in high-risk workplaces such as construction sites, we designed a new automated lightweight end-to-end convolutional neural network to identify whether all people on a construction site are wearing helmets. Firstly, we used GhostNet as the backbone feature extraction network to take advantage of its low running cost and make the model lighter overall while ensuring efficient automatic feature extraction. Secondly, we designed a multi-scale segmentation and feature fusion network (MSFFN) in the feature-processing stage to improve the algorithm's robustness in detecting objects at different scales. In contrast, the design of the feature fusion network can enrich the diversity of helmet features and improve the accuracy of helmet detection when distance changes, viewpoint changes, and occlusion phenomena occur. Thirdly, we proposed an improved version of the attention mechanism, the lightweight residual convolutional attention network version 2 (LRCA-Netv2). The main idea of the improvement is implemented around the spatial dimension by fusing the combined features along with the horizontal and vertical directions and then weighting them separately. Such an operation allows the establishment of dependencies between the more distant features with improved accuracy compared to the original LRCA-Net. Finally, when tested on the dataset, the proposed lightweight helmet-wearing detection network has a mAP and FPS of 93.5% and 42. | Liang, Han; Seo, Suyoung | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Civil Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea | Seo, Suyoung/AAB-8465-2020; Liang, Han/HPC-7877-2023 | 57222620902; 35198914000 | syseo@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 20 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 2.1 | 2025-06-25 | 15 | 25 | object detection; attention mechanism; lightweight network; helmet-wearing detection; computer vision; automated detection | SAFETY | attention mechanism; automated detection; computer vision; helmet-wearing detection; lightweight network; object detection | English | 2022 | 2022-10 | 10.3390/app122010369 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | CO2 Sorption and Regeneration Properties of K2CO3/Al2O3-Based Sorbent at High Pressure and Moderate Temperature | In this study, the CO2 sorption mechanisms and regeneration properties of alumina-based sorbent using K2CO3 loading under high-pressure and moderate temperature conditions were examined. To investigate the mechanism of CO2 sorption, a zirconium-based sorbent was compared with an alumina-based sorbent. The CO2 capture capacities of the PAI10, 20, 30, and 40 were 32.3, 63.0, 95.4, and 124.5 mg CO2/g sorbent, respectively. To investigate the CO2 sorption mechanism of an alumina-based sorbent, we performed XRD, TG/DTG, and FTIR analyses after CO2 sorption in the presence of 10 vol% CO2 and H2O each at 200 degrees C and 20 atm. For PAI10-40 sorbents, KHCO3 and KAl(CO3)(OH)(2) phases were observed by TG/DTG and FTIR analysis. For PAI-x sorbents, it was confirmed that the captured CO2 is desorbed completely at a temperature below 400 degrees C at 20 atm. | Ryu, Do-Yeong; Jo, Seongbin; Kim, Tae-Young; In, Soo-Yeong; Woo, Jin-Hyeok; Lee, Jong-Heon; Chae, Ho-Jin; Kim, Jae-Kuk; Hwang, Jae-Eun; Kim, Jae-Chang; Lee, Soo-Chool | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Dept Chem Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; JnK Co Ltd, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Univ Calif Riverside, Dept Chem & Environm Engn, Riverside, CA 92521 USA; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Res Inst Adv Energy Technol, Daegu 41566, South Korea | ; Chae, Ho/C-5535-2011; Kim, Yu/L-8480-2017; Jo, SeongBin/MFJ-9000-2025 | 57409454800; 57190754848; 57208461628; 57408939900; 57215492471; 57218697910; 57204090253; 57408595000; 57408940000; 55382762400; 8524020100 | dyryu@jnk.or.kr;sjo016@ucr.edu;tyoung0218@knu.ac.kr;soo0@knmac.kr;wjh8865@knu.ac.kr;rnswma123@knu.ac.kr;hwman777@knu.ac.kr;jkkim@jnk.or.kr;jehwang@jnk.or.kr;kjchang@knu.ac.kr;soochool@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 6 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.44 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 5 | CCUS; coal-fired power plant; pre-combustion; gamma-Al2O3; KHCO3; KAl(CO3)(OH)(2) | CARBON-DIOXIDE CAPTURE; CAO-BASED SORBENTS; ALUMINA SORBENTS; POTASSIUM; GAS; STABILITY; MGO | CCUS; Coal-fired power plant; KAl(CO<sub>3</sub>)(OH)<sub>2</sub>; KHCO<sub>3</sub>; Pre-combustion; Ɣ-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> | English | 2022 | 2022-03 | 10.3390/app12062989 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | |||
| ○ | ○ | Article | Comparative Study of Multiclass Text Classification in Research Proposals Using Pretrained Language Models | Recently, transformer-based pretrained language models have demonstrated stellar performance in natural language understanding (NLU) tasks. For example, bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) have achieved outstanding performance through masked self-supervised pretraining and transformer-based modeling. However, the original BERT may only be effective for English-based NLU tasks, whereas its effectiveness for other languages such as Korean is limited. Thus, the applicability of BERT-based language models pretrained in languages other than English to NLU tasks based on those languages must be investigated. In this study, we comparatively evaluated seven BERT-based pretrained language models and their expected applicability to Korean NLU tasks. We used the climate technology dataset, which is a Korean-based large text classification dataset, in research proposals involving 45 classes. We found that the BERT-based model pretrained on the most recent Korean corpus performed the best in terms of Korean-based multiclass text classification. This suggests the necessity of optimal pretraining for specific NLU tasks, particularly those in languages other than English. | Lee, Eunchan; Lee, Changhyeon; Ahn, Sangtae | Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect & Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea; Kyungpook Natl Univ, Sch Elect Engn, Daegu 41566, South Korea | ; Ahn, Sangtae/AFQ-7342-2022 | 57673909000; 57673368400; 55468016100 | purang2@knu.ac.kr;lch6694@knu.ac.kr;stahn@knu.ac.kr; | APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL | APPL SCI-BASEL | 2076-3417 | 12 | 9 | SCIE | CHEMISTRY, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;ENGINEERING, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;MATERIALS SCIENCE, MULTIDISCIPLINARY;PHYSICS, APPLIED | 2022 | 2.7 | 46.1 | 0.79 | 2025-06-25 | 5 | 9 | natural language understanding; multiclass text classification; bidirectional encoder representations from transformers; transfer learning; multilingual representation learning; cross-lingual representation learning | bidirectional encoder representations from transformers; cross-lingual representation learning; multiclass text classification; multilingual representation learning; natural language understanding; transfer learning | English | 2022 | 2022-05 | 10.3390/app12094522 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 | 바로가기 |
