Article Dexamethasone, a Synthetic Glucocorticoid, Induces the Activity of Androgen Receptor in Human Dermal Papilla Cells Psychosocial stress stimulates the secretion of glucocorticoids (GCs), which are stress-related neurohormones. GCs are secreted from hair follicles and promote hair follicle regression by inducing cellular apoptosis. Moreover, the androgen receptor (AR) is abundant in the balding scalp, and androgens suppress hair growth by binding to AR in androgenetic alopecia. First, by using immunofluorescence, we investigated whether the treatment of dermal papilla (DP) cells with dexamethasone (DEX), a synthetic GC, causes the translocation of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) into the nucleus. DEX treatment causes the translocation of the GR into the nucleus. Next, we investigated whether stress-induced GCs affect the AR, a key factor in male pattern baldness. In this study, we first assessed that DEX increases the expression of AR mRNA in non-balding DP cells, which rarely express AR without androgen. RU486, a GR antagonist, attenuated DEX-inducible AR mRNA expression and AR activation in human non-balding DP cells. In addition, AR translocated into the nucleus after DEX treatment. Furthermore, we indeed showed that the expression of AR was induced in the nucleus by DEX in DP cells of human and mouse hair follicles. Our results first suggest that stress-associated hair loss may be due to increased AR expression and activity induced by DEX. These results demonstrate that hair loss occurs in non-balding scalps with low AR expression. Review Nonconventional Yeasts Engineered Using the CRISPR-Cas System as Emerging Microbial Cell Factories Because the petroleum-based chemical synthesis of industrial products causes serious environmental and societal issues, biotechnological production using microorganisms is an alternative approach to achieve a more sustainable economy. In particular, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is widely used as a microbial cell factory to produce biofuels and valuable biomaterials. However, product profiles are often restricted due to the Crabtree-positive nature of S. cerevisiae, and ethanol production from lignocellulose is possibly enhanced by developing alternative stress-resistant microbial platforms. With desirable metabolic pathways and regulation in addition to strong resistance to diverse stress factors, nonconventional yeasts (NCY) may be considered an alternative microbial platform for industrial uses. Irrespective of their high industrial value, the lack of genetic information and useful gene editing tools makes it challenging to develop metabolic engineering-guided scaled-up applications using yeasts. The recently developed clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein (Cas) system is a powerful gene editing tool for NCYs. This review describes the current status of and recent advances in promising NCYs in terms of industrial and biotechnological applications, highlighting CRISPR-Cas9 system-based metabolic engineering strategies. This will serve as a basis for the development of novel yeast applications. Article On the Design Principles of 3-D RESURF-Enhanced RF SOI LDMOSFETs: Gate Geometry Optimization and Rescaling Gate aspect-ratio rescaling is correlated with improved electrical performance of the 3-D-reduced surface-field (RESURF)-enhanced 80-V radio frequency (RF) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) laterally double-diffused metal oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (LDMOSFET) possessing a 22.86-MWmiddotcm-2 unipolar figure of merit (FOM). The gate layout optimized by alignment with the n-stripe facilitates ideal charge transport into the drift region, orchestrating superior current handling capability, transconductance, and RF gain characteristics at a high gate bias for large-signal operation to bolster a 32-fold increase in transition frequency and at least one order of magnitude rise in maximum frequency of oscillation over that of the classical device at a comparable voltage rating. Article A pilot feasibility study to assess vascularity and perfusion of parathyroid glands using a portable hand-held imager Objectives Intraoperative localization and preservation of parathyroid glands (PGs) are challenging during thyroid surgery. A new noninvasive technique of combined near-infrared PG autofluorescence detection and dye-free imaging angiography that allows intraoperative feedback has recently been introduced. The objective of this study was to evaluate this technique in real-time. Materials and Methods A pilot feasibility study of a portable imaging device in four patients who underwent either thyroid lobectomy or total thyroidectomy is presented. PG autofluorescence and vascularity/tissue perfusion were monitored using a real-time screen display during the surgical procedure. Results Three lobectomies and one total thyroidectomy were performed. Among the nine PGs identified by the operating surgeon, eight PGs were confirmed using the autofluorescence device. Each PG was successfully determined to be either well-perfused or devascularized, and devascularized PGs were autotransplanted. Conclusions The preliminary results suggest that the combination of PG autofluorescence detection and dye-free angiography can potentially be used to assess PG function. With further validation studies, the effectiveness of this technique in clinical practice can be further delineated. Article Effect of Topical Tranexamic Acid on Seroma Formation in a Rat Mastectomy Model Background Seroma is the most common complication after mastectomy and reconstruction surgery. Therefore, this study aimed to determine whether the topical application of tranexamic acid would be useful to reduce seromas in a rat mastectomy model. Methods Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. After mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection, 0.4 mL of normal saline was administered to group A in the dead space. In group B, 0.4 mL of a triamcinolone mixed solution was administered. In group C, 0.4 mL of a tranexamic acid (10 mg/kg) mixed solution was administered. In group D, 0.4 mL of a tranexamic acid (50 mg/kg) mixed solution was administered. Gross examination, assessment with micro-computed tomography (CT), quantitative analysis via aspiration, and histopathologic assessment were implemented 7 and 14 days postoperatively. Results No other complications such as wound infection and skin necrosis were observed. At postoperative week 1, groups B and C showed significantly lower seroma volume values on micro-CT (P < 0.001 and P < 0.05, respectively) and seroma volume values at aspiration (P < 0.01 and P < 0.001, respectively) than group A. According to histopathologic analysis, inflammation was observed more frequently in groups A and D than in the other groups, and angiogenesis was more active in groups B and C than in the other groups. Conclusions Topical application of tranexamic acid was as effective as topical application of triamcinolone to prevent seroma formation. The stability of tranexamic acid was confirmed when the high dose of tranexamic acid was used. Article Influence of Irradiation on Capsules of Silicone Implants Covered with Acellular Dermal Matrix in Mice Background: In advanced breast cancer, radiotherapy is recommended as adjuvant therapy following breast reconstructive surgery. This inevitably led to growing concerns over possible complications of radiotherapy on implants. In this experimental animal study, we investigated the utility of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) wraps around implants as preventive management for radiotherapy complications. Methods: Black mice (C57NL6; n = 32) were assigned to groups that either received radiation or did not: groups A and B underwent surgery using implants without radiotherapy; while groups C and D underwent surgery using implantYs with radiotherapy for one and three months, respectively. The hemispheric silicone implants with an 0.8-cm-diameter were inserted on the left back of each mouse, and implants wrapped by ADM were inserted on the right back. The Clinic 23EX LINAC model was used for irradiation at 10 Gy. The samples were evaluated by gross assessment, histological analysis, immunohistochemical analysis, and the Western blotting test. Results: The H&E staining analysis showed that membrane thickness is smallest in group A, followed by groups C, D, and B. In a Masson trichrome histological analysis, collagen fibers became less dense and more widespread over time in the groups that received an ADM. Immunohistochemistry findings were similarly constant. However, the expression of TGF-beta 1 was increased in the irradiated groups, whereas it was decreased in the non-irradiated groups as observed over time. Conclusions: Radiotherapy was shown to increase risk factors for capsular contracture, including inflammatory response, pseudoepithelium, thinning of membrane, and TGF-beta 1 expression over time; however, the accompanying framework using an ADM as a barrier between implant and tissue was shown to be effective in alleviating these risks. Article Usefulness of Incisional Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for Decreasing Wound Complication Rates and Seroma Formation Following Prepectoral Breast Reconstruction Background Seroma is a common complication in prepectoral breast reconstruction. PICOTM dressing, a type of incisional negative pressure wound therapy (iNPWT), was used to reduce complications postoperatively. Methods This study was a retrospective cohort study that included patients who underwent prepectoral breast reconstruction between February 2017 and July 2019. There were two groups: one that received PICOTM dressing and a control group. The frequencies of overall complications, major seromas, and reoperations were analyzed. The durations and total amounts of seromas were also analyzed. Result Sixty patients were included in this study (PICOTM : 37 and non-PICOTM patients: 23). The overall incidence of complications, major seromas, and frequency of reoperations were lower in the PICO group compared to the non-PICOTM group (18.9% vs. 52.2%, p = 0.007; 16.2% vs. 43.5%, p = 0.020; 2.7% vs. 26.1%, p = 0.006, respectively). Univariate analysis was used to analyze the risk factors for complications due to the application of PICOTM dressing and showed statistically significant results for any complication. When univariate analysis was performed on risk factors for seroma, the duration of seroma showed statistical significance in association with PICOTM dressing status and mastectomy volume. The total number of patients who developed seroma was statistically correlated with age, PICOTM dressing status, and mastectomy volume. Conclusions PICOTM dressing after prepectoral breast reconstruction could be a useful tool for reducing the frequency of complications and major seroma, as well as the duration and total incidences of seroma. Article Average 22-Year Results of Total Hip Arthroplasty Using Harris-Galante Prosthesis in Patients under 50 Years Background: The Harris-Galante (HG) prosthesis is a first-generation, cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) prosthesis. Consid-ering the recent increase in the demand for THA in young patients and their life expectancy, a study with a follow-up duration of longer than 20 years in a young population is needed. Therefore, we evaluated the long-term clinical and radiographic results after cementless THA using the HG prosthesis in patients younger than 50 years. Methods: A total of 61 THAs performed using the HG with a minimum follow-up of 10 years were included. There were 38 men and 11 women with an average age of 46 years and the mean follow-up duration was 22 years. Clinical evaluation included modi-fied Harris Hip Score (HHS) and radiographic analysis consisted of cup inclination, anteversion angle, component stability, oste-olysis, liner wear rate, wear-through, liner dissociation, and heterotopic ossification. Complications included recurrent dislocation, periprosthetic femoral fracture, and periprosthetic joint infection. Survivorship analysis included cup and stem revision for aseptic loosening, as well as any revision. Results: The HHS improved from 46.5 preoperatively to 81.8 postoperatively (p < 0.001). The average linear wear rate was 0.36 mm/yr. A total of 34 hips (56%) were revised: stem revision in 10 (16.4%), cup revision in 9 (14.8%), exchange limited to bearing surface in 8 (13.1%), and revision of all components in 7 (11.5%). Estimated survivorship at 34 years postoperatively was 90.9% for cup revision for aseptic loosening, 80.5% for stem revision for aseptic loosening, and 22.1% for any revision. Conclusions: THA using the HG prosthesis showed satisfactory estimated survivorship of the acetabular and femoral components at 34 years postoperatively with good clinical outcomes. Bearing-related problems, such as osteolysis and liner dissociation, ac-counted for 56% of revision operations and were concerns in patients younger than 50 years. Article Catalytic performance of tridentate versus bidentate Co(ii) complexes supported by Schiff base ligands in vinyl addition polymerization of norbornene A series of Co(ii) complexes supported by Schiff base ligands, L-A-L-C, where L-A, L-B, and L-C are (E)-3-methoxy-N-(quinolin-2-ylmethylene)propan-1-amine, (E)-N-1,N-1-dimethyl-N-2-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)ethane-1,2-diamine, and (E)-N-1,N-1-dimethyl-N-2-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)ethane-1,2-diamine, respectively, were designed and synthesized. Structural studies revealed a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry for [LBCoCl2] and a distorted tetrahedral geometry for [LCCoCl2]. After activation with modified methyl aluminoxane (MMAO), all the Co(ii) complexes catalyzed the polymerization of norbornene (NB) to yield vinyl-type polynorbornenes (PNBs) with activities of up to 4.69 x 10(4) g(PNB) mol Co-1 h(-1) at 25 & DEG;C. High-molecular-weight (M-n of up to 1.71 x 10(5) g mol(-1)) soluble PNBs with moderate molecular-weight distributions (MWD) were obtained. The activity of the Co(ii)/MMAO catalytic system is influenced by the steric hindrance and electronic properties of the ligands. Article Fabrication of PA6/MoS2 nanocomposites via melt blending of PA6 with PA6/PEG modified-MoS2 masterbatch Modified MoS2 (mMoS(2)) was prepared by reacting MoS2 with alkyl lithium and amine-terminated long-chain polyethylene glycol (APEG) derivatives via a one-pot modification process. The APEG on the surface of MoS2 greatly limits the aggregation of MoS2. After that, polyamide 6 (PA6)/mMoS(2) masterbatch was prepared via a solution mixing of mMoS(2) and PA6. Then, the PA6/mMoS(2) nanocomposites were fabricated through melt blending of masterbatch and commercial PA6. The structure and properties of mMoS(2) and PA6/mMoS(2) composites were investigated. The thermal stability and glass transition temperature of the PA6/mMoS(2) composites were slightly improved, and their tensile strength, Young's modulus and storage modulus of PA6/mMoS(2) composites increased by up to 57, 110 and 200%, respectively, compared to those of the pristine PA6. Therefore, this study provides a convenient method for achieving enhanced interaction between the polymer chains and MoS2, and APEG modification would be an effective method for producing well-dispersed MoS2 composites with high thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties. Article Laser-treated wood for high-efficiency solar thermal steam generation Solar-driven water vaporization is considered one of the most sustainable ways to solve water scarcity. The design of highly efficient solar absorber systems has received extensive attention. Here, we report a novel light absorption material for water evaporation using laser-treated wood. The obtained laser-treated wood possesses interconnected 3D porous networks formed by the random construction of carbon arrays and a hydrophilic surface due to the oxygen implantation by laser treatment. When under 1 sun solar-simulated light irradiation (1 kW m(-2)), the surface temperatures of dry and water-saturated wood reach 59.5 degrees C and 40.4 degrees C, respectively, indicating good heat localization. As a result, the laser-treated wood under 1 sun illumination shows high solar to vapor efficiencies of 93.1% and 92.6% for pure water and seawater, respectively, which are higher than that of most wood-based reported photo-thermal conversion materials. Therefore, the fabricated laser-treated wood may pave the way for harvesting solar energy to produce clean water at low cost. Article Low-temperature solution-processed SnO2 electron transport layer modified by oxygen plasma for planar perovskite solar cells SnO2 has attracted significant attention as an electron transport layer (ETL) because of its wide optical bandgap, electron mobility, and transparency. However, the annealing temperature of 180 degrees C-200 degrees C, as reported by several studies, for the fabrication of SnO2 ETL limits its application for flexible devices. Herein, we demonstrated that the low-temperature deposition of SnO2 ETL and further surface modification with oxygen plasma enhances its efficiency from 2.3% to 15.30%. Oxygen plasma treatment improves the wettability of the low-temperature processed SnO2 ETL that results in a larger perovskite grain size. Hence, oxygen plasma treatment effectively improves the efficiency of perovskite solar cells at a low temperature and is compatible with flexible applications. Article Results and Factors Affecting Clinical Efficacy of Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction Using a Gracilis Tendon Suture Technique Background: This study evaluated the outcomes of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction using a gracilis tendon suture technique for patients with patellar instability. Potential factors affecting clinical efficacy were also evaluated. Methods: This study included 22 patients diagnosed with patellar instability, who underwent MPFL reconstruction using a graci-lis tendon. Their mean age was 21.5 years (range, 15-48 years), and the mean follow-up period was 26.8 months (range, 12-66 months). Clinical evaluation included the determination of Kujala, Lysholm, and Tegner scores. Radiographic evaluation included changes in congruence angle and arthritic changes in the patellofemoral joint. Additionally, patients were examined for any com-plications, including recurrent dislocation. Factors affecting clinical efficacy were also evaluated. Results: All clinical scores improved at final follow-up. The mean congruence angle improved from 23.6 degrees before surgery to -6.5 degrees at final follow-up. Two of 15 patients developed osteoarthritic changes in the patellofemoral joint. Dislocation recurred in 2 pa-tients with type C trochlear dysplasia, which showed a statistically significant association with recurrent dislocation when com-pared to type A and B dysplasia (p = 0.026). Kujala scores were significantly lower among patients with abnormal patellar tilts (p = 0.038), and Lysholm scores were significantly lower among patients with femoral internal rotation deformity (p = 0.024).Conclusions: Satisfactory results were obtained after MPFL reconstruction using a gracilis tendon suture technique for patients with patellar instability. However, dislocation recurred in patients with type C trochlear dysplasia, and clinical efficacy was lower among patients with femoral internal rotation and patellar tilt. Article Selective strontium adsorption using synthesized sodium titanate in aqueous solution Amorphous sodium titanates were synthesized using a mid-temperature sol-gel method for evaluation as selective adsorbents of strontium in the presence of cesium or metal cations (Al3+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and Mn2+) from aqueous solution. Synthesized sodium titanate showed high adsorption capacity and selectivity for strontium. The maximum adsorption capacity of strontium by sodium titanate was 193.93 mg g(-1) in aqueous solution containing an initial concentration of 5 mM (438.60 mg L-1) strontium and 5 mM (666.67 mg L-1) cesium, and this sodium titanate removed 99.9% of the strontium and 40.67% of cesium from an aqueous solution that had an initial concentration of 1.14 mM (100 mg L-1) strontium and 0.75 mM (100 mg L-1) cesium. Strontium adsorption by synthesized sodium titanate followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and a generalized Langmuir isotherm model, and reached an adsorption equilibrium within 1 h with high adsorption capacity at equilibrium. Adsorbed strontium onto synthesized sodium titanate showed the behavior of forming a strontium titanate structure with a titanate frame via surface precipitation.
