Conference paper Cryptanalysis and Countermeasures of 'LAAKA: Lightweight Anonymous Authentication and Key Agreement Scheme for Secure Fog-Driven IoT Systems' Fog computing is a technology that fog servers cover the computational tasks of cloud server. Therefore, end devices can receive more real-time and localized services from fog servers. Therefore, researchers integrate fog computing and Internet of Things (IoT) to supplement the resource constraint problem of IoT devices and process data services in network edge. In 2024, Ali et al. proposed a mutual authentication and key agreement protocol to preserve anonymous and lightweight communications in fog-driven IoT environments. They utilized only hash functions and exclusive-OR (XOR) operators considering hardware specifications of IoT devices. In this work, we cryptanalysis Ali et al.'s authentication protocol to prove that 'ephemeral secret leakage (ESL)' and 'stolen verifier attacks' can be performed in their protocol. Moreover, we discover that Ali et al.'s protocol has a 'desynchronization problem', where network entities cannot conduct authentication after initial communication. To supplement these security flaws, we conduct a discussion and present countermeasures, such as physically unclonable function (PUF), dynamic update of temporary identity, and usage of long-term secret parameters. © 2025 IEEE. Article Cultivation and Quality Characterization of New Variety Atractylodeds japonica ‘Wigang’ Background: Atractylodes japonica Koidzumi, known as ‘Atractylodes rhizome white’, is used for gastric treatment and is heavily dependent on imports, with 92% of its distribution imported in 2019. Cultivation is challenged by susceptibility to Phytophthora root rot, with no suitable breeding cultivars for its pharmacopoeia origin. Methods and Results: In 2017, vigorous seedlings were selected from crossbred lines, and the most promising lines were chosen in 2019. These lines underwent replicate yield trials from 2020 to 2021 and local adaptability testing from 2022 to 2023. The result was the development of the ‘Wigang’ cultivar, offering high yields and strong resistance to Phytophthora root rot. In regional trials conducted from 2022 to 2023, ‘Wigang’ produced a dried root yield of 480 kg per acre, marking a 279% increase over Yeongdong Jaerae. Additionally, the new cultivar showed strong resistance to Phytophthora root rot in both the field and indoor inoculation tests. Although ‘Wigang’ had lower atractylenolide I and atractylon levels, its β-eudesmol level was similar to that of ‘Yeongdong jaerae.’ Conclusion: In this study, we developed ‘Wigang’, the first A. japonica cultivar in Korea. ‘Wigang’ showed a stable yield and strong resistance to Phytophthora root rot. © 2025, Korean Society of Medicinal Crop Science. Article Design and performance analysis of a dual-core gold-coated PCF-based plasmonic RI sensor for the detection of bio-analytes This paper presents a straightforward sensor design based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) mechanism, utilizing a gold-coated dual-core type photonic crystal fiber (DCPCF-SPR) for the detection of diverse bioorganic biochemical analytical molecules in the spectral ranges of visible to near infrared (0.5–2 μm) wavelength. With two major hexagonal ring lattices and many circular air holes, the sensor construction is made to be less complicated, and the external surface of the designed structure is coated by a layer of gold (Au) that is 40 nm depth as plasmonic material depending on chemical adoption and excellent sensing performance. employing the finite element method (FEM), the detecting functions were examined for the chemical analytes in the measurement of refractive index range from 1.33 to 1.42. The maximal wavelength sensitivity (WS) and amplitude sensitivity (AS) of the proposed sensor were 27,000 nm/RIU and 1701.69 RIU−1 with the resolutions of 3.70 × 10−6 RIU and 5.88 × 10−6 RIU, respectively, and 482 RIU−1 was found as a maximum figure of merit (FOM). Placing the plasmonic material and analyte sensing layer on the DCPCF's outside is noteworthy in the design, as it indicates the feasibility of easier manufacturing processes. Conference paper Design of Smart Farm Service Architecture Based-On Microservice With the rapid advancements in IoT, big data, and AI technologies, smart farm and agriculture have emerged as a key solution for improving productivity and maintaining optimal crop growth environments, leading to various ongoing studies. As part of this research, this paper proposes a microservice-based smart agriculture framework that integrates cloud and edge computing. The framework consists of cloud, edge, controller, and device entities, each playing a crucial role in ensuring efficient environmental control and real-time decision-making for crop growth. By incorporating edge computing, the proposed service architecture mitigates issues related to network latency and failures, thereby enhancing system stability and responsiveness. Moreover, the service management module, present in both cloud and edge entities, enables flexible service scalability and version control while ensuring seamless operation even during network outages. Through the implementation of a testbed, we validated the system's operational procedures and demonstrated that the edge-enabled architecture reduces response times by approximately 40% in high-latency network conditions. This study highlights the potential of edge computing in smart agriculture and lays the groundwork for future research focusing on comprehensive performance evaluations and high-availability service monitoring in various environments. © 2025 IEEE. Conference paper Design Strategies for Smart Community Elderly Care Services - A Situational Theory Approach With global population aging accelerating, the need for effective, personalized elderly care services is urgent. This study applies situational theory to the design of smart community elderly care services, aiming to enhance their adaptability and responsiveness to the diverse needs of older adults. Focusing on China’s rapidly aging society, the research examines the current state of smart elderly care services and the challenges in providing tailored solutions. The smart community care model involves collaboration among governments, service providers, medical institutions, technology companies, and families, utilizing technologies like sensors and cloud platforms to deliver personalized services. Through field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature reviews, this study analyzes the smart community model in China, identifying key challenges and gaps in service. The research defines “elderly” as individuals aged 65 and above, especially those with physical or cognitive impairments. Interviews with 100 elderly individuals, 30 healthcare professionals, 7 family members, and 4 community managers provided valuable insights. The study introduces the CSE (Character, Service, Equipment) framework to categorize key contextual factors influencing service design. Based on these findings, the study proposes user-centered design strategies that integrate adaptive technologies and social support systems to better address the evolving needs of elderly individuals. Article Determination of Optimal Checkpoint Intervals for Quintuple Modular Redundancy Real-Time Systems; [5중 구조 실시간 시스템을 위한 최적 체크포인터 구간 선정] The paper proposes a novel checkpoint management method for a real-time system with a quintuple modular redundancy (QMR) structure wherein multiple fault detections are performed between checkpoints. If the detected faults can be overcome within the context of the QMR structure, they are recovered by simply synchronizing the state values. Otherwise, the system rollbacks to the most recent checkpoint and re-executes the task to recover from the faults. The real-time system having the QMR structure and incorporating the proposed checkpoint scheme is modeled by a Markov chain. Based on the Markov chain model, a probability equation is derived to calculate the likelihood of completing the real-time task within the deadline. The optimal number of checkpoints and fault detections maximizing the probability value are also determined. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the optimization procedure of the real-time system with a QMR structure using the proposed checkpoint management method. Article Dimeric R²⁵CPTH(1-34) activates the parathyroid hormone-1 receptor in vitro and stimulates bone formation in osteoporotic female mice Osteoporosis, characterized by reduced bone density and strength, increases fracture risk, pain, and limits mobility. Established therapies of parathyroid hormone (PTH) analogs effectively promote bone formation and reduce fractures in severe osteoporosis, but their use is limited by potential adverse effects. In the pursuit of safer osteoporosis treatments, we investigated (PTH)-P-R25C, a PTH variant wherein the native arginine at position 25 is substituted by cysteine. These studies were prompted by our finding of high bone mineral density in a hypoparathyroidism patient with the R25C homozygous mutation, and we explored its effects on PTH type-1 receptor (PTH1R) signaling in cells and bone metabolism in mice. Our findings indicate that (PTH)-P-R25C(1-84) forms dimers both intracellularly and extracellularly, and the synthetic dimeric peptide, (PTH)-P-R25C(1-34), exhibits altered activity in PTH1R-mediated cyclic AMP (cAMP) response. Upon a single injection in mice, dimeric (PTH)-P-R25C(1-34) induced acute calcemic and phosphaturic responses comparable to PTH(1-34). Furthermore, repeated daily injections increased calvarial bone thickness in intact mice and improved trabecular and cortical bone parameters in ovariectomized (OVX) mice, akin to PTH(1-34). The overall results reveal a capacity of a dimeric PTH peptide ligand to activate the PTH1R in vitro and in vivo as PTH, suggesting a potential path of therapeutic PTH analog development. Article Directions for outcome-based nursing education to improve clinical competency; [성과중심 간호교육과정 운영의 효율성 제고를 위한 개선방향] Purpose: This study critically examined the challenges of implementing an outcome-based nursing curriculum in Korea, focusing on the gap between academic learning and clinical competency. We proposed targeted strategies, including course credit structure adjustments, expansion of training sites, and the enhancement of clinical training models to better align with professional demands. Methods: As part of an “Innovative Nursing Education Initiative” funded by the Korean Nurses Association, a national survey was conducted by sending out an official letter to nursing department directors who were currently implementing outcome-based nursing programs. A total of 90 program managers responded, yielding a 44.3% response rate. Results: The responses were collected from 54 universities and 36 colleges. Three primary areas of concern were addressed: challenges in implementing an outcome-based curriculum (34.4%), issues related to course structure (37.8%), and clinical practice limitations (41.1%). Despite the adoption of an outcomes-based approach, the nursing curriculum remains heavily focused on national exam subjects for both theory and practice, highlighting a persistent gap between classroom learning and clinical application. Conclusion: This study identified key challenges in outcome-based nursing education across 90 institutions, including rigid course credit structures centered on national licensing exams, excessive clinical hours, and limited placement site availability, that compromise training quality. The study recommended course credit structure modifications, improvements in clinical education models, and the expansion of training site opportunities to address these issues. Article Discrepant Effect of High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol on the Hematologic Malignancy Risk: A Nationwide Cohort Study Objective: Although high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) is inversely associated with hematologic malignancies, modification by smoking has not been reported. We investigated how smoking and menopausal status modify these association. Methods: This population-based cohort study enrolled cancer-free individuals who underwent a national cancer screening in 2010 and followed up until December 2017. HDL-C levels were classified into eight groups based on 10 mg/dL intervals: (<30, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60–69, 70–79, 80–89, or ≥90 mg/dL). Results: Among 4,517,892 participants, 5887 had lymphoma, 3348 had leukemia, and 12151 had unspecified hematologic malignancies. The adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) for the lowest HDL-C levels compared to the 70–79 mg/dL range were 1.83 (1.45–2.31) for lymphoma, 3.14 (2.41–4.08) for leukemia, and 2.34 (2.01–2.72) for unspecified hematologic malignancy. The effects of low HDL-C levels on hematologic malignancies were similar in both men and women. Low HDL-C levels were associated with a higher risk of leukemia regardless of smoking status, but extremely high HDL-C levels were linked to a higher risk of leukemia (aHR, 2.32; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.18–4.55) only in current smokers.The hazardous effect of low HDL-C levels on lymphoma was significant only in never smokers (aHR, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.51–2.68). Hazardous effects of low HDL-C levels on leukemia were observed only in post-menopausal women (aHR, 2.94; 95% CI, 1.69–5.11). Conclusion: Low HDL-C levels were associated with a higher risk of leukemia and lymphoma, with discrepancies based on smoking and menopausal status. © 2025, Korean Society of Lipid and Atherosclerosis. Article Disease Progression and Treatment of Mammary Gland Osteosarcoma in a Dog: A Case Report A 12-year-old intact female Miniature Pinscher dog was presented to our hospital with a large mass in the right mammary gland. On computed tomography, several masses throughout the mammary glands and enlarged bilateral inguinal lymph nodes were confirmed. Right hemimastectomy was performed first, and mammary gland osteosarcoma with lymph node metastasis was diagnosed by histopathological examination. After consultation with the owner, left hemimastectomy was not performed, but chemotherapy with carboplatin was initiated. The dog was treated with carboplatin, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and mega-dose vitamin C therapy for approximately eight months. However, during the course of treatment, pulmonary metastasis, neurological signs, and periosteal reaction in the appendicular skeletons developed, and the patient died after several seizure episodes. This present case report describes the overall disease progression and treatment of mammary gland osteosarcoma in a dog. © The Korean Society of Veterinary Clinics. Article Driver Behavior Anomaly Detection Based on Federated Learning Considering Data Distribution Imbalance This study presents a cross-device federated learning framework for detecting anomalous behavior in automotive mobility and evaluates its performance across various experimental scenarios. The proposed framework retains data locally on vehicle clients, ensuring data privacy while achieving high predictive performance through cross-device federated learning settings. It addresses challenges specific to automotive mobility, such as data distribution imbalance, and employs the lightweight deep learning model like MobileNet for computational efficiency, enabling real-time anomaly detection. Experimental results can demonstrate that the federated learning model achieves accuracy comparable to centralized models without requiring the direct sharing of sensitive driver data. This highlights the framework’s ability to balance data privacy and performance, making it suitable for privacy-sensitive environments such as smart mobility platforms. We believe that the practicality of our framework in mobility applications and its broader potential for developing smart intelligent systems to comply with stringent privacy regulations can offer a valuable solution for integrating artificial intelligence into data-driven industries. © 2025, Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences. Book chapter EEG-Based Emotion Classification Through Multi-Objective Hyperparameter Search This study leverages electroencephalogram (EEG) data for the classification of emotions. To enhance the accuracy of the classification process, a multi-objective hyperparameter search is employed, specifically tailored to optimize the performance of the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) classifier. A pivotal aspect of this methodology lies in effectively managing the trade-off between accuracy and computational complexity. This challenge is effectively addressed through the implementation of the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) as the optimization framework. By adopting this approach, the study offers a robust and efficient solution for emotion classification, showcasing its relevance and effectiveness within the domain of affective computing. Article Effect of dilute Rh on oxygen dissociation, spillover, and the oxidation of Cu across many orders of magnitude pressure Knowledge of how trace amounts of more reactive metals influence the oxidation rate and mechanism of Cu surfaces is essential for developing strategies to optimize the performance of Cu-based catalysts. We find that the addition of 1% Rh to Cu(111) increases the initial O2 dissociation rate by approximately 9-fold. CO poisoning experiments reveal that single Rh atoms activate O2 and facilitate the spillover of atomic oxygen to Cu sites. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) support this mechanism, showing enhanced surface oxygen near Rh atoms. A density functional theory (DFT)-based model demonstrates that Rh binds the O2 precursor 0.15 eV more strongly than Cu(111) and lowers the O2 dissociation barrier by 0.02 eV. Both single-crystal and nanoparticle experiments show that at low oxygen pressures, Rh enhances Cu oxidation, whereas at higher pressures, it inhibits deeper oxidation, as evidenced by in situ ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectra. © 2025 Elsevier Inc. Article Effectiveness of migration and human rights education applying the ARCS model among nursing students This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Migration and Human Rights Education Applying the ARCS model (MHREAM) program among nursing students. A quasi-experimental, one-group, pretest-posttest design was used with 23 nursing students (20 females, 3 males). The MHREAM intervention incorporated teaching and learning strategies to enhance attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. The program was conducted weekly over 14 weeks, with each session lasting 75 minutes. The study measured motivation toward instructional materials and learning outcomes, including human rights awareness and sensitivity. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvements in posttest scores compared to pretest scores for the Instructional Materials Motivation Scale (IMMS), human rights awareness, and sensitivity. The results suggest that the Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction (ARCS) model effectively enhances IMMS. Furthermore, improved human rights awareness and sensitivity through MHREAM may enable nursing students to contribute to creating healthcare environments that uphold the dignity and human rights of diverse populations, including migrants. © 2025 by the authors.
