Article 3'-UTR Polymorphisms of Vitamin B-Related Genes Are Associated with Osteoporosis and Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures (OVCFs) in Postmenopausal Women As life expectancy increases, the prevalence of osteoporosis is increasing. In addition to vitamin D which is well established to have an association with osteoporosis, B vitamins, such as thiamine, folate (vitamin B9), and cobalamin (vitamin B12), could affect bone metabolism, bone quality, and fracture risk in humans by influencing homocysteine/folate metabolism. Despite the crucial role of B vitamins in bone metabolism, there are few studies regarding associations between B vitamin-related genes and osteoporosis. In this study, we investigated the genetic association of four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the 3'-untranslated regions of vitamin B-related genes, includingTCN2(encodes transcobalamin II),CD320(encodes transcobalamin II receptor),SLC19A1(encodes reduced folate carrier protein 1), andSLC19A2(encodes thiamine carrier 1), with osteoporosis and osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF). We recruited 301 postmenopausal women and performed genotyping ofCD320 rs9426C>T,TCN2 rs10418C>T,SLC19A1 rs1051296G>T, andSLC19A2 rs16862199C>Tusing a polymerization chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. There was a significantly higher incidence of both osteoporosis (AOR 5.019; 95% CI, 1.533-16.430,p< 0.05) and OVCF (AOR, 5.760; 95% CI, 1.480-22.417,p< 0.05) in individuals with genotypeCD320CT+TT and high homocysteine concentrations. Allele combination analysis revealed that two combinations, namelyCD320C-TCN2T-SLC19A1T-SLC19A2C (OR, 3.244; 95% CI, 1.478-7.120,p< 0.05) andCD320T-TCN2C-SLC19A1G-SLC19A2C (OR, 2.287; 95% CI, 1.094-4.782,p< 0.05), were significantly more frequent among the osteoporosis group. Our findings suggest that SNPs within theCD320gene in 3 '-UTR may contribute to osteoporosis and OVCF occurrences in some individuals. Furthermore, specific allele combinations ofCD320,TCN2,SLC19A1,andSLC19A2may contribute to increased susceptibility to osteoporosis and OVCF. Article A compact and efficient graphene FET based RF energy harvester for green communication This paper presents a graphene field effect transistor (FET) based rectenna with substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) broadband approach for RF energy harvesting application. The proposed structure of integrated rectenna consists of a graphene FET rectifier and an SIW antenna operating in the (S-11 < -10 dB) range of 29-46 GHz. The peak gain of the SIW antenna observed is 8.12 dBi. In addition, a new matched circuit consisting of microstrip line and butterfly stub (without using any lumped elements) is designed. The matched circuit provides a miniaturized block by reducing the size and eliminating parasitic reactance in the integrated rectenna. The proposed rectenna is implemented and fabricated using two superimposed layers: RT/duroid 5880 and graphene substrate with a compatible approach. A measured conversion efficiency of 80.32% is obtained. The dimensions of the proposed antenna and rectifier are 3.2 x 3.2 x 0.4 mm(3) and 3.2 x 10 x 0.4 mm(3), respectively. The proposed rectenna covers Ka- and Q-band applications and could be a potential candidate for contemporary energy harvesting systems. (C) 2019 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved. Article An ultra-compact two-port UWB-MIMO antenna with dual band-notched characteristics In this paper, an ultra-compact two-port MIMO antenna working in the frequency range of 3.1-10.6 GHz with dual band-notched characteristics is presented. The MIMO antenna consists of two identical octagonal-shaped radiating elements placed adjacent to each other with a connected ground plane. The overall size of the proposed two-port UWB-MIMO antenna is 19 x 30 x 0.8 mm(3). In the ground plane of antenna elements, a T-shaped stub is introduced to create band-notch at 5.5 GHz. Also, an open-ended half-guided-wavelength resonator slot is introduced along the upper edge of the octagonal radiator to obtain a broader notched-band (4.37-5.95 GHz). The second band-notch is created around 7 GHz (6.52-7.45 GHz) by etching another open-ended slot from the radiating patch. The two-notch bands reject interference due to HiperLAN, WiMAX, INSAT/Super-extended C-band, downlink of X-band satellite communication and RFID service bands. A pair of L-shaped slits are introduced in the feed line to improve impedance matching, for the frequency band available between the two notches. The proposed design is fabricated on an FR-4 substrate and minimum isolation greater than 18 dB (a major portion >22 dB) and envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) less than 0.13 are obtained. The antenna gain varies in the range of 1.2-2.91 dBi with a variation of 1.71 dBi only. A radiation efficiency, greater than 70% is achieved throughout the operating frequency band. Article Effect of convergent duct geometry on the energy extraction performance of tandem oscillating hydrofoils system In the present study, a new hydrokinetic energy harvester concept based on the tandem oscillating hydrofoils configuration is numerically investigated. Unsteady turbulent two dimensional flow simulations were performed, by using the commercial finite volume computational fluid dynamics code FLUENT, to study the power extraction from tandem hydrofoils oscillating inside a convergent duct. A sinusoidal function was used to interpret the plunging/pitching motion of NACA 0015 hydrofoil. Computations were carried out for the different configurations of area ratios (AR) that is defined as the ratio of the upstream hydrofoil's inlet cross section (A(1)) to the downstream hydrofoil's inlet cross section (A(2)) ranging from 1.0 (without the convergent section) to AR = 2.6. The study revealed that the power extraction was enhanced by the increased incoming flow velocity enabled by the geometry of the convergent duct, which positively affected the total pressure as well as the hydrofoil-vortex interaction time and resulted the generation of larger vertical hydrodynamic force. Upon analysis of the obtained results, it is found that the energy extraction efficiency is improved, compared to that of the conventional tandem configuration where the hydrofoils move in an open flow space, and, as the area ratio (AR) increased, the amount of extracted power becomes higher in a proportion ranging from 4% to 80%. The concept was numerically tested for tandem and single configurations and for non-dimensional frequencies in the range of f* = 0.04 - 0.20. One interesting finding is that, due to some positive effect of hydrofoil-vortex interaction, and at a specified area ratio and frequency, the downstream hydrofoil efficiency exceeds the efficiency of a single hydrofoil located at exactly same position as the downstream hydrofoil in the tandem configuration. The frequency and the area ratio are found to be critical factors that determine whether the downstream hydrofoil-vortex interaction is favorable or unfavorable. An optimal area ratio frequency combination results in a positive hydrofoil-vortex interaction effect and allows the downstream hydrofoil to contribute positively to the total power extraction as a single hydrofoil. Based on the present results, and for an optimal efficient energy harvester design, a new correlation is suggested in order to properly control the area ratio in accordance with the variation of the oscillating frequency leading to more power production and high performance of the oscillating tandem hydrofoils. Article Expression of the Long Noncoding RNA GAS5 Correlates with Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Background: Advanced liver fibrosis is the most important prognostic factor in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), growth arrest-specific transcript 5 (GAS5), is associated with the inhibition of liver fibrogenesis, and its levels are decreased in cirrhotic liver. Methods: We analyzed 51 patients with NAFLD, the diagnosis of which was confirmed by liver biopsy. Expression of GAS5 in both the liver and plasma of the patients was analyzed using a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction according to the fibrosis stage. Results: Plasma GAS5 expression was significantly higher in patients with advanced fibrosis than in those without. As the fibrosis progressed, GAS5 expression in plasma increased, with the exception of that in cirrhotic livers. Plasma levels of GAS5 were lower in patients with cirrhosis than in those with advanced fibrosis. Conclusion: Elevated circulating levels of the lncRNA GAS5 are associated with the progression of liver fibrosis prior to the development of cirrhosis. Article Human resources required for antimicrobial stewardship activities for hospitalized patients in Korea Objectives: We calculated the human resources required for an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) in Korean hospitals. Design: Multicenter retrospective study. Setting: Eight Korean hospitals ranging in size from 295 to 1,337 beds. Methods: The time required for performing ASP activities for all hospitalized patients under antibiotic therapy was estimated and converted into hours per week. The actual time spent on patient reviews of each ASP activity was measured with a small number of cases, then the total time was estimated by applying the determined times to a larger number of cases. Full-time equivalents (FTEs) were measured according to labor laws in Korea (52 hours per week). Results: In total, 225 cases were reviewed to measure time spent on patient reviews. The median time spent per patient review for ASP activities ranged from 10 to 16 minutes. The total time spent on the review for all hospitalized patients was estimated using the observed number of ASP activities for 1,534 patients who underwent antibiotic therapy on surveillance days. The most commonly observed ASP activity was 'review of surgical prophylactic antibiotics' (32.7%), followed by 'appropriate antibiotics recommendations for patients with suspected infection without a proven site of infection but without causative pathogens' (28.6%). The personnel requirement was calculated as 1.20 FTEs (interquartile range [IQR], 1.02-1.38) per 100 beds and 2.28 FTEs (IQR, 1.93-2.62) per 100 patients who underwent antibiotic therapy, respectively. Conclusion: The estimated time required for human resources performing extensive ASP activities on all hospitalized patients undergoing antibiotic therapy in Korean hospitals was similar to 1.20 FTEs (IQR, 1.02-1.38) per 100 beds. Article Hybrid beam selection scheme in millimeter-wave beamspace MIMO-NOMA with lens antenna array Beam selection is a notable issue for recent wireless communications. A conventional single beam selection (SBS) concept is utilized to minimize the number of necessary radio frequency chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) systems. In general, the traditional SBS concept cannot implement a multiple beam group selection opportunity for every supported user. In this circumstance, the user side spends too much computational burden to measure the decoded message and suffer a beam optimization problem. Therefore, we propose a hybrid beam selection (HBS) scheme to utilize a multiple SBS scheme in beamspace MIMO-NOMA systems. Consequently, each supported user can easily achieve a low beam optimization problem by selecting a reliable SBS group from the proposed HBS scheme and significantly increase the spectral performance. Furthermore, we demonstrate an iterative beam power maximization algorithm utilizing the HBS scheme to solve the power allocation problem in this paper. Article Magnetic resonance imaging features of tumor and lymph node to predict clinical outcome in node-positive cervical cancer: a retrospective analysis Background Current chemoradiation regimens for locally advanced cervical cancer are fairly uniform despite a profound diversity of treatment response and recurrence patterns. The wide range of treatment responses and prognoses to standardized concurrent chemoradiation highlights the need for a reliable tool to predict treatment outcomes. We investigated pretreatment magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features of primary tumor and involved lymph node for predicting clinical outcome in cervical cancer patients. Methods We included 93 node-positive cervical cancer patients treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy at our institution between 2006 and 2017. The median follow-up period was 38 months (range, 5-128). Primary tumor and involved lymph node were manually segmented on axial gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted images as well as T2-weighted images and saved as 3-dimensional regions of interest (ROI). After the segmentation, imaging features related to histogram, shape, and texture were extracted from each ROI. Using these features, random survival forest (RSF) models were built to predict local control (LC), regional control (RC), distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS), and overall survival (OS) in the training dataset (n = 62). The generated models were then tested in the validation dataset (n = 31). Results For predicting LC, models generated from primary tumor imaging features showed better predictive performance (C-index, 0.72) than those from lymph node features (C-index, 0.62). In contrast, models from lymph nodes showed superior performance for predicting RC, DMFS, and OS compared to models of the primary tumor. According to the 3-year time-dependent receiver operating characteristic analysis of LC, RC, DMFS, and OS prediction, the respective area under the curve values for the predicted risk of the models generated from the training dataset were 0.634, 0.796, 0.733, and 0.749 in the validation dataset. Conclusions Our results suggest that tumor and lymph node imaging features may play complementary roles for predicting clinical outcomes in node-positive cervical cancer. Article Plastome Characterization and Phylogenomics of East Asian Beeches with a Special Emphasis on Fagus multinervis on Ulleung Island, Korea Beech trees of the genus Fagus (Fagaceae) are monoecious and distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. They represent an important component of mixed broad-leaved evergreen-deciduous forests and are an economically important source of timber. Despite their ecological and economical importance, however, little is known regarding the overall plastome evolution among Fagus species in East Asia. In particular, the taxonomic position and status of F. multinervis, a beech species endemic to Ulleung Island of Korea, remains unclear even today. Therefore, in this study, we characterized four newly completed plastomes of East Asian Fagus species (one accession each of F. crenata and F. multinervis and two accessions of F. japonica). Moreover, we performed phylogenomic analyses comparing these four plastomes with F. sylvatica (European beech) plastome. The four plastomes were highly conserved, and their size ranged from 158,163 to 158,348 base pair (bp). The overall GC content was 37.1%, and the sequence similarity ranged from 99.8% to 99.99%. Codon usage patterns were similar among species, and 7 of 77 common protein-coding genes were under positive selection. Furthermore, we identified five highly variable hotspot regions of the Fagus plastomes (ccsA/ndhD, ndhD/psaC, ndhF/rpl32, trnS-GCU/trnG-UCC, and ycf1). Phylogenetic analysis revealed the monophyly of Fagus as well as early divergence of the subgenus Fagus and monophyletic Engleriana. Finally, phylogenetic results supported the taxonomic distinction of F. multinervis from its close relatives F. engleriana and F. japonica. However, the sister species and geographic origin of F. multinervis on Ulleung Island could not be determined. Article The velvet Regulator VosA Governs Survival and Secondary Metabolism of Sexual Spores in Aspergillus nidulans The velvet regulator VosA plays a pivotal role in asexual sporulation in the model filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans. In the present study, we characterize the roles of VosA in sexual spores (ascospores) in A. nidulans. During ascospore maturation, the deletion of vosA causes a rapid decrease in spore viability. The absence of vosA also results in a lack of trehalose biogenesis and decreased tolerance of ascospores to thermal and oxidative stresses. RNA-seq-based genome-wide expression analysis demonstrated that the loss of vosA leads to elevated expression of sterigmatocystin (ST) biosynthetic genes and a slight increase in ST production in ascospores. Moreover, the deletion of vosA causes upregulation of additional gene clusters associated with the biosynthesis of other secondary metabolites, including asperthecin, microperfuranone, and monodictyphenone. On the other hand, the lack of vosA results in the downregulation of various genes involved in primary metabolism. In addition, vosA deletion alters mRNA levels of genes associated with the cell wall integrity and trehalose biosynthesis. Overall, these results demonstrate that the velvet regulator VosA plays a key role in the maturation and the cellular and metabolic integrity of sexual spores in A. nidulans. Article Application of k-ε turbulence models with density corrections to variable density jets under subcritical/supercritical conditions A density correction method is presented for improving the performance of turbulence models for variable-density jets under subcritical and supercritical conditions. The functional relationship between density and turbulence variables was obtained by considering the logarithmic layer and local equilibrium conditions and the basic form of the relationship was discussed with the large-eddy simulation results. The modified eddy viscosity and a source term of the -equation were introduced in four models, and the modified models were tested for helium, air, and carbon dioxide jets in the presence of co-flowing air. The velocity and density fields of the density-corrected models were in good agreement with the experiment. Cryogenic nitrogen jets under near-critical and supercritical pressures were selected for examining the applicability of the models to the variable density flow with heat transfer. The high velocity decay rates of the original models were found to be considerably reduced in the modified models. The effect of density correction was consistent among the four models with wall function and near-wall treatment. Article Site selection and characterization for onshore 10,000-ton-class CO2 pilot storage in Early Miocene Janggi Basin, SE Korea: Storage potential and structural stability of siliciclastic-volcaniclastic storage combination This paper presents the results of site selection and characterization for onshore 10,000-ton-class CO2 pilot storage in the Miocene Janggi Basin, SE Korea. The results were obtained from an integrated analysis of geological, geophysical, and geotechnical data, and indicated that Noeseongsan Subbasin is filled by >1-km-thick terrestrial sediments with dacitic to basaltic volcanic materials. Promising storage units are coarse siliciclastic sediments intercalated with mudstones in the lowermost Janggi Conlomerate, exhibiting suitable reservoircaprock association for CO2 injection. The overlying Seongdongri Formation is composed of laterally extensive dacitic tuffs and fine-dominated tuffaceous sediments, forming a regional seal. The storage combination is characterized by a doubly sealed stratigraphic trap, and is laterally confined by juxtaposed seals formed by syndepositional normal fault sets. By considering the stratigraphic and structural features, the conglomerate and sandstone bodies at the boreholes JG-6 (940-971 m) and JG-7-1 (946-970 m) were selected as the optimal site for CO2 storage. It is expected that the stratigraphic and structural traps at the selected site minimize the leakage risk of injected CO2 due to the scarcity of surface and subsurface fractures, low fault intensity, and limited vertical extents of buried faults. The present study reveals that if multidisciplinary approaches involving careful synthesis of the basin were performed, an adequate storage site also can be obtained in this type of small-scale ancient sedimentary basin bearing abundant volcanic materials. Article Turbulent flow characteristics for enhanced thermal mixing in square and triangular jets In this study, turbulent flows and the associated mixing characteristics are numerically investigated for noncircular jets. The selected nozzle shapes are round, square, and equilateral triangular, and a passive scalar is adopted to quantify the flow mixing. To achieve a constant mass flow rate, the same cross-sectional area is maintained, and the Reynolds stress model (RSM) is applied to show the turbulence-driven secondary flows. For Re = 21,000, the flow fields of noncircular jets are compared to those of the round jet. After 5 < x/D-e < 10, the half-widths of the round, square, and triangular jets increase linearly. This self-similar structure of the jet flow is rapidly developed for the noncircular jets. Compared to that for the round jet, the spreading rate for square jet increases by 20% and 27% for the triangular jet. From the mixedness values, the mixing is estimated to be enhanced by 16.7% for the square jet and 22.9% for the triangular jet. To elucidate the flow characteristics related to this feature, the scatter plots and streamlines of the secondary flows, vorticity transport equation, and anisotropy-invariant map are discussed. From the results, a balanced relationship between the entrained flow of ambient fluid and the outward spreading flow is observed, and the related turbulence structure is confirmed. Review External electric field effect on electronic properties and charge transfer in CoI2/NiI2 spinterface Electronic structure and spin-related properties of CoI2/NiI2 heterostructure were studied by means of density functional theory. It was shown that the electronic structure at the Fermi level can be characterized by a band gap. The effect of the external electric field on charge transfer and electronic properties of the CoI2/NiI2 interface was investigated, and it was found that band gap width depends on the strength of the applied electric field, switching its nature from semiconducting to a half-metallic one. An easy control of the electronic properties and promising spin-polarized nature of the CoI2/NiI2 spinterface allows the heterostructure to be used in spin-related applications. Article Copper-Catalyzed Construction of Trinuclear N-Fused Hybrid Scaffolds Using Cyclic Ureas as New Building Blocks 2-(2-Bromoaryl)- and 2-(2-bromovinyl)-benzimidazoles are coupled and cyclized with cyclic ureas as new building blocks in dimethylformamide in the presence of a catalytic amount of a copper catalyst and a base to give the corresponding trinuclear N-fused hybrid scaffolds in good yields. Trinuclear N-fused hybrid scaffolds having methoxy group on benzimidazole moiety are readily oxidized to unprecedented benzimidazolequinone-fused hybrid scaffolds in high yields by treatment of ceric ammonium nitrate in acetonitrile/H2O.
