Article Effects of Proton Irradiation on the Current Characteristics of SiN-Passivated AlGaN/GaN MIS-HEMTs Using a TMAH-Based Surface Pre-Treatment This study investigated the combined effects of proton irradiation and surface pre-treatment on the current characteristics of Gallium Nitride (GaN)-based metal-insulator-semiconductor high-electron-mobility-transistors (MIS-HEMTs) to evaluate the radiation hardness involved with the Silicon Nitride (SiN) passivation/GaN cap interface. The impact of proton irradiation on the static and dynamic current characteristics of devices with and without pre-treatment were analyzed with 5 MeV proton irradiation. In terms of transfer characteristics before and after the proton irradiation, the drain current of the devices without and with pre-treatment were reduced by an increase in sheet and contact resistances after the proton irradiation. In contrast with the static current characteristics, the gate-lag characteristics of the device with pre-treatment were significantly degenerated. In the device with pre-treatment, the hydrogen passivation for surface states of the GaN cap was formed by the pre-treatment and SiN deposition processes. Since the hydrogen passivation was removed by the proton irradiation, the newly created vacancies resulted in the degeneration of gate-lag characteristics. After nine months in an ambient atmosphere, the gate-lag characteristics of the device with pre-treatment were recovered because of the hydrogen recombination. These results demonstrated that the radiation hardness of MIS-HEMTs was affected by the SiN/GaN interface quality. Article Experimental determination of the magnetic interactions of frustrated Cairo pentagon lattice materials We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the Cairo pentagon lattice magnets Bi2Fe4O9 and Bi4Fe5O13F, supported by high field magnetization measurements of Bi2Fe4O9. Using linear spin wave theory and mean-field analyses we determine the spin exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy in these materials. The Cairo lattice is geometrically frustrated and consists of two inequivalent magnetic sites, both occupied by Fe3+ ions and connected by two competing nearest neighbor interactions. We found that one of these interactions, coupling nearest neighbor spins on the threefold symmetric sites, is extremely strong and antiferromagnetic. These strongly coupled dimers are then weakly coupled to a framework formed from spins occupying the other inequivalent site. In addition, we found that the Fe3+ S = 5/2 spins have a non-negligible single-ion anisotropy, which manifests as a spin anisotropy gap in the neutron spectrum and a spin-flop transition in high field magnetization measurements. Article Generation-based study of airway remodeling in smokers with normal-looking CT with normalization to control inter-subject variability Purpose: With the help of quantitative computed tomography (QCT), it is possible to identify smoking-associated airway remodeling. However, there is currently little information on whether QCT-based airway metrics are sensitive to early airway wall remodeling in subclinical phases of smoking-associated airway disease. This study aimed to evaluate a predictive model that normalized airway parameters and investigate structural airway alterations in smokers with normal-looking CT using the normalization scheme. Methods: In this retrospective analysis, 222 non-smokers (male 97, female 125) and 69 smokers (male 66, female 3) from January 2014 to December 2016 were included, and airway parameters were quantitatively analyzed. To control inter-subject variability, multiple linear regressions of tracheal wall thickness (WT), diameter (D), and luminal area (LA) were performed, adjusted for age, sex, and height. Using this normalization scheme, airway parameters with matched generation were compared between smokers and non-smokers. Results: Using the normalization scheme, it was possible to assess generation-based structural alterations of the airways in subclinical smokers. Smokers showed diffuse luminal narrowing of airways for most generations (P < 0.05, except 3rd generation), no change in wall thickness of the proximal bronchi (1st-3rd generation), and a thinning of distal airways (P <0.05, ?4th generation). Conclusion: QCT assessment for subclinical smokers can help identify minimal structural changes in airways induced by smoking. Article Low Subthreshold Slope AlGaN/GaN MOS-HEMT with Spike-Annealed HfO2 Gate Dielectric AlGaN/GaN metal-oxide semiconductor high electron mobility transistors (MOS-HEMTs) with undoped ferroelectric HfO2 have been investigated. Annealing is often a critical step for improving the quality of as-deposited amorphous gate oxides. Thermal treatment of HfO2 gate dielectric, however, is known to degrade the oxide/nitride interface due to the formation of Ga-containing oxide. In this work, the undoped HfO2 gate dielectric was spike-annealed at 600 degrees C after the film was deposited by atomic layer deposition to improve the ferroelectricity without degrading the interface. As a result, the subthreshold slope of AlGaN/GaN MOS-HEMTs close to 60 mV/dec and on/off ratio>10(9) were achieved. These results suggest optimizing the HfO2/nitride interface can be a critical step towards a low-loss high-power switching device. Article Miniaturized Portable Total Phosphorus Analysis Device Based on Photocatalytic Reaction for the Prevention of Eutrophication Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important elements in the aquatic ecosystem, but its overuse causes eutrophication, which is a serious issue worldwide. In this study, we developed a miniaturized portable total phosphorus (TP) analysis device by integrating a TP sensor with a photocatalyst to pretreat analyte and optical components (LED and photodetector) to measure the absorbance of the blue-colored analyte for real-time TP monitoring and prevention of eutrophication. The size of the miniaturized portable TP analysis device is about 10.5 cm x 9.5 cm x 8 cm. Analyte-containing phosphorus was pretreated and colored blue by colorizing agent as a function of the phosphorus concentration. Absorbance of the blue-colored analyte was estimated by the LED and the photodetector such that the phosphorus concentration was quantitatively measured. This device can obtain a wide linear response range from 0.5 mg/L to 2.0 mg/L (R-2 = 0.97381), and its performance can be improved by increasing the intensity of the UV light emitted from the LED array. Consequently, the performance of this miniaturized portable TP analysis device was found to be similar to that of a conventional TP analysis system; thus, it can be used in automated in situ TP analysis. Article PEI-Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Thin Film Sensor for CO2 Gas Detection at Room Temperature In this study, a polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized carbon nanotube (CNT) sensor was fabricated for carbon dioxide detection at room temperature. Uniform CNT thin films prepared using a filtration method were used as resistive networks. PEI, which contains amino groups, can effectively react with CO2 gas by forming carbamates at room temperatures. The morphology of the sensor was observed, and the properties were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. When exposed to CO2 gas, the fabricated sensor exhibited better sensitivity than the pristine CNT sensor at room temperature. Both the repeatability and selectivity of the sensor were studied. Article Photosynthetic and Physiological Characteristics of the EvergreenLigustrum japonicumand the DeciduousCornus officinalis The evergreen, broad-leaved,Ligustrum japonicumand the deciduousCornus officinalisare distributed in the central and southern parts of Korea and are widely used as landscape plants. In this study, we observed changes in the physiological characteristics of the two species across seasons by observing the changes in leaf photosynthesis; chlorophyll fluorescence; chlorophyll, carotenoid, and carbohydrate contents, osmolality and total ions. With a low soil moisture content due to low rainfall in June, the deciduousC. officinalisshowed a 0.3 mmol m(-2) s(-1)stomatal conductance and open stomata allowing for photosynthesis. However, the evergreenL. japonicumshowed a 0 mmol m(-2) s(-1)stomatal conductance and almost completely closed stomata, indicating a high water use efficiency.Cornus officinalisexhibited a higher leaf net photosynthetic rate (P-N), stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), and carbon fixation efficiency (CE) thanL. japonicumin all months except for November at which time its leaves fell from senescence. In winter,L. japonicumshowed a dramatic decrease in its photosynthetic rate andF(v)/F(m)ratio under conditions of lower than average air temperature and soil moisture; furthermore, it showed a high ratio of the photochemical quantum yield Y(NO) and almost no photosynthetic activity despite it having leaves.Ligustrum japonicumappears to be tolerant to water stress and low temperature by a maintenance of osmosis through the increase and accumulation of soluble carbohydrates in winter. In conclusion, the two species showed different physiological characteristics under a water stress environment. Article Sensor-Embedded Automatic Grasping Forceps for Precise Corneal Suture in Penetrating Keratoplasty In penetrating keratoplasty (PKP), the proper corneal suture placement is very important for successful transplantation and restoring functional vision. Generating sutures with accurate depth is difficult for the surgeon because of the tissue's softness, lack of depth information, and hand tremors. In this paper, an automatic cornea grasping device is proposed, which detects when the device reaches the target suture depth. When the device reaches the target depth, the device rapidly grasps the cornea to prevent error induced by human hand tremors. In the paper, the performance of the proposed sensor, the actuator, and the device are experimentally verified with ex vivo experiment. The result showed that the proposed device could enhance the accuracy and precision of the corneal suture depth. Article The Improvement of Performance through Minimizing Scallop Size in MEMS Based Micro Wind Turbine In this paper we report on the improvement of performance by minimizing scallop size through deep reactive-ion etching (DRIE) of rotors in micro-wind turbines based on micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology. The surface profile of an MEMS rotor can be controlled by modifying the scallop size of the DRIE surface through changing the process recipe. The fabrication of a planar disk-type MEMS rotor through the MEMS fabrication process was carried out, and for the comparison of the improvements in the performance of each rotor, RPM testing and open circuit output voltage experiments of stators and permanent magnets were performed. We found that the smooth etching profile with a minimized scallop size formed using DRIE results in improved rotation properties in MEMS-based wind turbine rotors. Article Thermoelectric properties of the stripe-charge ordering phases in IrTe2 We investigate the effects of stripe-charge ordering on the thermoelectric power of IrTe2, together with other transport properties, including the resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Hall effect. At the stripe-charge ordering transitions, clear transport anomalies such as abrupt changes in the thermoelectric power and Hall effect are observed and attributed to multiband conduction due to stripe-order-driven Fermi surface (FS) reconstruction. This FS reconstruction depends sensitively on intralayer charge modulations and interlayer staircaselike arrangements, leading to complex sign changes in the thermoelectric power. Article Comparison of Intaglio Surface Adjustment in the Oral Cavity for Lithium Disilicate Crowns Fabricated Using Different Scanners Purpose A clinical study to evaluate the intraoral adjustment of crowns fabricated using different scanners. Materials and Methods A total of 15 patients requiring single ceramic crowns were recruited. Impressions were made according to four protocols: a conventional approach and using three intraoral scanners (IOSs) (CS3600 (Carestream Dental, Atlanta, GA), i500 (Medit, Seoul, Republic of Korea), and EZIS PO (DDS, Seoul, Republic of Korea)). Four crowns per patient were fabricated using lithium disilicate ceramic. An experienced dentist performed the internal adjustment in the oral cavity. Three-dimensional analysis was conducted using an inspection software program (Geomagic Control X; 3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC). Statistical analysis was conducted using one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honest significance difference tests (alpha = 0.05). Results A significant difference was observed in the intraoral adjustment among the conventional approach and the three IOSs (F = 213.7,p< 0.001). Crowns fabricated by conventional impressions (20.1 +/- 1.4 mu m) displayed better three-dimensional conformity before and after intraoral adjustment than IOS groups (29.6 +/- 4.3 mu m) (p< 0.001). Conclusions Crowns fabricated using conventional impressions required fewer intraoral adjustments of the intaglio surface than those fabricated using IOSs. Article Cortical neuroanatomical changes related to specific neuropsychological deficits in subcortical vascular cognitive impairment Objective: Neuropsychological test-specific neural substrates in subcortical vascular cognitive impairment (SVCI) are expected to differ from those in Alzheimer's disease-related cognitive impairment (ADCI) but the details are unclear. To determine neural substrates related to cerebral small vessel disease, we investigated the correlations between cognitive dysfunctions measured by standardized neumpsychological tests and cortical thickness in a large sample of participants with amyloid negative (A beta (-)) SVCI. Methods: One hundred ninety-eight participants with A beta (-) SVCI were recruited from the memory clinic between November 2007 to August 2018. To acquire neural substrates, we performed linear regression using the scores of each neuropsychological test as a predictor, cortical thickness as an outcome, and age, sex, education years, intracranial volume and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) as confounders. Results: Poor performances in each neumpsychological test were associated with cortical atrophy in certain brain regions regardless of WMH. Especially, not the medial temporal but the frontal and posterior cingulate regions with cortical atrophy were mainly associated with memory impairment. Poor performance in animal fluency was more likely to be associated with cortical atrophy in the left hemisphere, while poor performance in the visuospatial memory test was more likely to be associated with cortical atrophy in the right hemisphere. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that cortical atrophy was an important factor of cognitive impairment in A beta (-) SVCI regardless of WMH. Furthermore, our findings might give clinicians a better understanding of specific neural substrates of neuropsychological deficits in patients with SVCI. Article Digital Workflow for Establishing the Posterior Palatal Seal on a Digital Complete Denture The posterior palatal seal (PPS) plays important roles in improving denture retention, preventing food and debris from entering under the denture base, reducing the gag reflex, providing more strength across the denture, and making the distal border less noticeable to the tongue. Digital dentures have become popular, owing to the use of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing and rapid prototyping technologies. However, limited research has been conducted on a digital workflow to establish the PPS. This article presents a technique to establish the PPS by using digital technologies for providing the advantages of the PPS to patients wearing digital dentures. Article Long-term in-vivo recording performance of flexible penetrating microelectrode arrays Objective. Neural interfaces are an essential tool to enable the human body to directly communicate with machines such as computers or prosthetic robotic arms. Since invasive electrodes can be located closer to target neurons, they have advantages such as precision in stimulation and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in recording, while they often exhibit unstable performance in long-term in-vivo implantation because of the tissue damage caused by the electrodes insertion. In the present study, we investigated the electrical functionality of flexible penetrating microelectrode arrays (FPMAs) up to 3 months in in-vivo conditions. Approach. The in-vivo experiment was performed by implanting FPMAs in five rats. The in-vivo impedance as well as the action potential (AP) amplitude and SNR were analyzed over weeks. Additionally, APs were tracked over time to investigate the possibility of single neuron recording. Main results. It was observed that the FPMAs exhibited dramatic increases in impedance for the first 4 weeks after implantation, accompanied by decreases in AP amplitude. However, the increase/decrease in AP amplitude was always accompanied by the increase/decrease in background noise, resulting in quite consistently maintained SNRs. After 4 weeks of implantation, we observed two distinctive issues regarding long-term implantation, each caused by chronic tissue responses or by the delamination of insulation layer. The results demonstrate that the FPMAs successfully recorded neuronal signals up to 12 weeks, with very stably maintained SNRs, reduced by only 16.1% on average compared to the first recordings, although biological tissue reactions or physical degradation of the FPMA were present. Significance. The fabricated FPMAs successfully recorded intracortical signals for 3 months. The SNR was maintained up to 3 months and the chronic function of FPMA was comparable with other silicon based implantable electrodes. Article Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 detection and reversed RT-PCR results in mild or asymptomatic patients Background The clinical course and viral detection period in mild or asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients are not yet known. The presumed low diagnostic sensitivity of upper respiratory specimens for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) makes it difficult to confirm infection and recommend de-isolation. Methods We retrospectively reviewed real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results of mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 patients who were admitted at the Daegu-Gyeongbuk 7th community treatment centre in Korea between 9 March 2020 and 10 April 2020. Patients underwent an upper respiratory RT-PCR test every week until discharge. From the RT-PCR results, we evaluated the rate of prolonged (>3 weeks) SARS-CoV-2 RNA positivity. We analysed the proportion of reversed results, defined as a positive or indeterminate result one day after a negative RT-PCR result, according to time (28 days) from the initial positive RT-PCR result. Results In 23% (69/300) of patients, SARS-CoV-2 was detected more than 3 weeks after the initial positive RT-PCR. In 14% (42/300) of patients, the RT-PCR results were positive for more than 4 weeks. For 37.5% (152/405) of negative RT-PCR results, the results were reversed in the next day's test. And 43.5% (123/283) of negative RT-PCR results were reversed within 3 weeks of diagnosis. Conclusions The detection of SARS-CoV-2 lasting more than 3 weeks was common in mild or asymptomatic patients. Upper respiratory RT-PCR results were frequently reversed from negative to positive.
