| ○ | ○ | Article | WSN-SLAP: Secure and Lightweight Mutual Authentication Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks | Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are widely used to provide users with convenient services such as health-care, and smart home. To provide convenient services, sensor nodes in WSN environments collect and send the sensing data to the gateway. However, it can suffer from serious security issues because susceptible messages are exchanged through an insecure channel. Therefore, secure authentication protocols are necessary to prevent security flaws in WSN. In 2020, Moghadam et al. suggested an efficient authentication and key agreement scheme in WSN. Unfortunately, we discover that Moghadam et al.'s scheme cannot prevent insider and session-specific random number leakage attacks. We also prove that Moghadam et al.'s scheme does not ensure perfect forward secrecy. To prevent security vulnerabilities of Moghadam et al.'s scheme, we propose a secure and lightweight mutual authentication protocol for WSNs (WSN-SLAP). WSN-SLAP has the resistance from various security drawbacks, and provides perfect forward secrecy and mutual authentication. We prove the security of WSN-SLAP by using Burrows-Abadi-Needham (BAN) logic, Real-or-Random (ROR) model, and Automated Verification of Internet Security Protocols and Applications (AVISPA) simulation. In addition, we evaluate the performance of WSN-SLAP compared with existing related protocols. | ○ | ○ | Review | Artificial intelligence in breast ultrasonography | Although breast ultrasonography is the mainstay modality for differentiating between benign and malignant breast masses, it has intrinsic problems with false positives and substantial interobserver variability. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly with deep learning models, is expected to improve workflow efficiency and serve as a second opinion. AI is highly useful for performing three main clinical tasks in breast ultrasonography: detection (localization/segmentation), differential diagnosis (classification), and prognostication (prediction). | ○ | ○ | Article | Correlations of azimuthal anisotropy Fourier harmonics with subevent cumulants in pPb collisions at √sNN=8.16 TeV | Event-by-event long-range correlations of azimuthal anisotropy Fourier coefficients (v(n)) in 8.16 TeV pPb data, collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, are extracted using a subevent four-particle cumulant technique applied to very low multiplicity events. Each combination of four charged particles is selected from either two, three, or four distinct subevent regions of a pseudorapidity range from -2.4 to 2.4 of the CMS tracker, and with transverse momentum between 0.3 and 3.0 GeV. Using the subevent cumulant technique, correlations between v(n) of different orders are measured as functions of particle multiplicity and compared to the standard cumulant method without subevents over a wide event multiplicity range. At high multiplicities, the v(2) and v(3) coefficients exhibit an anticorrelation; this behavior is observed consistently using various methods. The v(2) and v(4) correlation strength is found to depend on the number of subevents used in the calculation. As the event multiplicity decreases, the results from different subevent methods diverge because of different contributions of noncollective or few-particle correlations. Correlations extracted with the four-subevent method exhibit a tendency to diminish monotonically toward the lowest multiplicity region (about 20 charged tracks) investigated. These findings extend previous studies to a significantly lower event multiplicity range and establish the evidence for the onset of long-range collective multiparticle correlations in small system collisions. | Sirunyan, A. | ○ | ○ | Article | Differential cross sections for Λ(1520) using photoproduction at CLAS | The reaction gamma p -> K+Lambda(1520) using photoproduction data from the CLAS g12 experiment at Jefferson Lab is studied. The decay of Lambda(1520) into two exclusive channels, Sigma(+)pi(-) and Sigma(-)pi(+), is studied from the detected K+, pi(+), and pi(-) particles. A good agreement is established for the Lambda(1520) differential cross sections with the previous CLAS measurements. The differential cross sections as a function of center-of-mass angle are extended to higher photon energies. Newly added are the differential cross sections as a function of invariant four-momentum transfer t, which is the natural variable to use for a theoretical model based on a Regge-exchange reaction mechanism. | ○ | ○ | Article | Dynamical model of φ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and ⁴He | We investigate phi meson photoproduction on the nucleon and He-4 targets within a dynamical model approach based on a Hamiltonian which describes the production mechanisms by the Pomeron exchange, meson exchange, phi radiation, and nucleon resonance excitation mechanisms. The final phi N interactions are included and described by the gluon-exchange, direct phi N couplings, and the box diagrams arising from the couplings with pi N, rho N, K Lambda, and K Sigma channels. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by the experimental data of gamma p -> phi p from the CLAS Collaboration. The resulting Hamiltonian is then used to predict the coherent phi-meson production on the He-4 targets by using the distorted-wave impulse approximation. For the proton target, the final ON rescattering effects, as required by the unitarity condition, are found to be very weak, which supports the earlier calculations in the literature. For the He-4 targets, the predicted differential cross sections are in good agreement with the data obtained by the LEPS Collaboration. | ○ | ○ | Article | Measurement of deeply virtual Compton scattering off ⁴He with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab | We report on the measurement of the beam spin asymmetry in the deeply virtual Compton scattering off He-4 using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab using a 6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam incident on a pressurized He-4 gaseous target. We detail the method used to ensure the exclusivity of the measured reactions, in particular the upgrade of CLAS with a radial time projection chamber to detect the low-energy recoiling He-4 nuclei and an inner calorimeter to extend the photon detection acceptance at forward angles. Our results confirm the theoretically predicted enhancement of the coherent (e(4)He -> e'4He'gamma') beam spin asymmetries compared to those observed on the free proton, while the incoherent (e(4)He -> e'p'gamma'X') asymmetries exhibit a 30% suppression. | ○ | ○ | Article | Nogo-A regulates myogenesis via interacting with Filamin-C | Among the three isoforms encoded by Rtn4, Nogo-A has been intensely investigated as a central nervous system inhibitor. Although Nogo-A expression is increased in muscles of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, its role in muscle homeostasis and regeneration is not well elucidated. In this study, we discovered a significant increase in Nogo-A expression in various muscle-related pathological conditions. Nogo(-/-) mice displayed dystrophic muscle structure, dysregulated muscle regeneration following injury, and altered gene expression involving lipid storage and muscle cell differentiation. We hypothesized that increased Nogo-A levels might regulate muscle regeneration. Differentiating myoblasts exhibited Nogo-A upregulation and silencing Nogo-A abrogated myoblast differentiation. Nogo-A interacted with filamin-C, suggesting a role for Nogo-A in cytoskeletal arrangement during myogenesis. | ○ | ○ | Article | Graphene Oxide-Reduced Graphene Oxide Janus Membrane for Efficient Solar Generation of Water Vapor | Water purification by solar distillation technique is considered a sustainable method of producing fresh water. Thus, the development of a highly efficient solar absorber system has gained considerable attention. In this study, we report a graphene oxide (GO)- reduced graphene oxide (rGO) Janus membrane produced via laser treatment of the GO membrane under the protection of hydrogel. One side of the GO membrane is reduced to rGO using laser power, while the other side of the GO membrane is protected by hydrogel to avoid laser ablation and retain the integrity and original state of the membrane. The hydrophilicity of the GO layer and the relative hydrophobicity of the rGO layer complement each other and work synergistically. The hydrophilic GO side provides a good water transmission channel and exhibits good block salt penetration, whereas the relatively hydrophobic rGO side with a 3D rough surface increases the evaporation rate by increasing the sunlight absorption. Therefore, the resultant GO-rGO Janus membrane under 1 sun illumination exhibits a high solar-to-vapor efficiency of 91.4%, which is higher than that of most graphene-based photothermal conversion materials previously reported. Simultaneously, it is found that the GO-rGO Janus membrane is highly efficient and salt resistant and can be utilized for the purification of various types of water, including seawater and supersaturated brine. | ○ | ○ | Article | Development of Neuromonitoring Pedicle Screw - Results of Electrical Resistance and Neurophysiologic Test in Pig Model | Objective: To analyze the electrical resistance of a newly developed neuromonitoring pedicle screw (Neuro-PS) and to verify the electrophysiologic properties of the Neuro-PS in a pig model. Methods: We developed 2 types of the Neuro-PS in which a gold lead was located internally (type I) and externally (type II). We measured the electrical resistance of the Neuro-PS and the conventional screw and analyzed the electrical thresholds of triggered EMG (t-EMG) of each screw by intentionally penetrating the medial pedicle wall and contacting the exiting nerve root in a pig model. Results: The electrical resistances of the Neuro-PS were remarkably lower than that of the conventional screw. In electrophysiologic testing, only the type II Neuro-PS under the lead-nerve contact condition showed a significantly lower stimulation threshold as compared to the conventional screw. Conclusion: The Neuro-PS demonstrated lower electrical resistances than the conventional screw. | ○ | ○ | Article | Geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate amplifies Treg differentiation via increased IL-2 expression to ameliorate DSS-induced colitis | Blocking the mevalonate pathway for cholesterol reduction by using statin may have adverse effects including statin-induced colitis. Moreover, one of the predisposing factors for colitis is an imbalanced CD4(+) T cell, which can be observed on the complete deletion of HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), a target of statins. In this study, we inquired geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate (GGPP) is responsible for maintaining the T-cell homeostasis. Following dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, simvastatin increased the severity of disease, while cotreatment with GGPP, but not with cholesterol, reversed the disease magnitude. GGPP ameliorated DSS-induced colitis by increasing T-reg cells. GGPP amplified T-reg differentiation through increased IL-2/STAT 5 signaling. GGPP prenylated Ras protein, a prerequisite for extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway activation, leading to increased IL-2 production. Higher simvastatin dose increased the severity of colitis. GGPP ameliorated simvastatin-increased colitis by increasing T-reg cells. | ○ | ○ | Review | Hemodynamic Management of Acute Spinal Cord Injury: A Literature Review | The goal of acute spinal cord injury (SCI) management is to reduce secondary injuries and improve neurological recovery after its occurrence. This review aimed to explore the literature regarding hemodynamic management to reduce ischemic secondary injury and improve neurologic outcome following acute SCI. The PubMed database was searched for studies investigating blood flow, mean arterial pressure (MAP), and spinal cord perfusion pressure after SCI. The 2013 guidelines of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons/Congress of Neurological Surgeons recommended maintaining MAP at 85-90 mmHg for 7 days after SCI to potentially improve outcome. However, this recommendation was based on weak evidence for neurologic benefit. The maintenance of MAP will typically require vasopressors, which may have their own set of complications. More recently, studies have suggested the potential importance of considering spinal cord perfusion pressure in addition to the MAP. Further research on the hemodynamic management of acute SCI is required to determine how to optimize neurologic recovery. | ○ | ○ | Article | Intraoperative Monitoring for Cauda Equina Tumors: Surgical Outcomes and Neurophysiological Data Accrued Over 10 Years | Objective: Cauda equina tumors affect the peripheral nervous system, and the validities of triggered electromyogram (tEMG) and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IOM) are unclear. We sought to evaluate the accuracy and relevance of tEMG combined with IOM during cauda equina tumor resection. Methods: Between 2008 and 2018, an experienced surgeon performed cauda equina tumor resections using tEMG at a single institution. A cauda equina tumor was defined as an intradural-extramedullary or intradural-extradural tumor at the level of L2 or lower. The clinical presentation, extent of resection, pathology, recurrence, postoperative neurological outcomes, and intraoperative tEMG mapping and IOM data were retrospectively analyzed. Results: One hundred three patients who underwent intraoperative tEMG were included; 38 underwent only tEMG (tEMG-only group), and 65 underwent a combination of tEMG and multimodal IOM (MIOM group). There were no significant differences between the neurologic outcomes, extents of resection, or recurrence rates of the 2 groups. No significant therapeutic benefit was observed; however, the accuracy of intraoperative predetection improved with the combination of IOM and tEMG (accuracy: tEMG-only group, 86.8%; MIOM group, 92.3%). When the involved rootlet was resected despite the positive tEMG result, motor function worsened in 3 of 8 cases. The sensitivity and specificity of tEMG were 37.5% and 94.7%, respectively. Conclusion: tEMG is an essential adjunctive surgical tool for deciding on and planning for rootlet resection. If the tEMG finding is negative, complete resection, involving the rootlet, may be safe.
