Article Search for strongly interacting massive particles generating trackless jets in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV A search for dark matter in the form of strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs) using the CMS detector at the LHC is presented. The SIMPs would be produced in pairs that manifest themselves as pairs of jets without tracks. The energy fraction of jets carried by charged particles is used as a key discriminator to suppress efficiently the large multijet background, and the remaining background is estimated directly from data. The search is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 16.1 fb(-1), collected with the CMS detector in 2016. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. For the simplified dark matter model under consideration, SIMPs with masses up to 100 GeV are excluded and further sensitivity is explored towards higher masses. Article Shoulder pain, shoulder disability, and depression as serial mediators between stress and health-related quality of life among middle-aged women Background This study analyzed the mediating effects of shoulder pain, disability, and depression on the relationship between stress and health-related quality of life among middle-aged women using a serial mediation model. Methods. Data on stress, health-related quality of life, shoulder pain, shoulder disability, and depression were collected from 565 women aged 35-64 years living in Seoul, South Korea, from May 13 to 23, 2021, using a self-reported, structured survey. SPSS PROCESS macro (Model 6) and serial mediation analysis were used to analyze the relationship between stress and health-related quality of life among participants, with shoulder pain, shoulder disability, and depression as mediators. Results. The results indicate that stress had a statistically direct impact on health-related quality of life. In the serial mediation analysis, shoulder pain, disability, and depression were found to be statistically significant, thus affecting the relationship between stress and health-related quality of life, with an explanatory power of 33%. Therefore, the relationship between stress and health-related quality of life was partially mediated by these variables. Conclusions. Thus, this study suggests the need for healthcare workers to develop methods, such as exercise intervention programs based on various degrees and types of physical activity, to improve health-related quality of life and reduce stress caused by shoulder pain, shoulder disability, and depression among middle-aged women. Article Clinical features and epidemiology of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in dogs in the Republic of Korea: an observational study (2019-2020) Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a zoonotic disease with a high mortality rate for humans and cats. The clinical course and prognosis of SFTS in dogs remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of SFTS virus (SFTSV) infection in dogs. All evaluated dogs exhibited an acute course and symptoms including fever (57.1%), anorexia (57.1%), depression (42.9%), and vomiting (35.7%). Thrombocytopenia was present in 45.5% of dogs, while jaundice was not observed. C-reactive protein, alanine transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase were elevated in some cases. Viral clearance occurred within 6 to 26 days. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the SFTSV sequences were consistent with viruses circulating in the Republic of Korea. As dogs often live in close contact with humans, awareness of the clinical and epidemiological features of SFTS in dogs is crucial. Further large-scale studies are necessary to investigate SFTSV infection in dogs. Article Cyclic Response and Reconsolidation Volumetric Strain of Sand under Repeated Cyclic Shear Loading Events Many regions of the world have witnessed repeated earthquakes that have caused repeated liquefaction of soil. Therefore, the effect of repeated earthquakes on the dynamic behavior of soil is an important aspect that must be considered. In this study, a series of cyclic shear loading events and consolidation phases was repeated for loose sand to investigate the cyclic stress-strain response and postcyclic reconsolidation volumetric strain that are usually induced by repeated earthquakes. After an initial consolidation, samples were subjected to repeated cyclic shear loading events and subsequent reconsolidations in a cyclic direct simple shear (CDSS) device with various cyclic stress ratios (CSRs) under undrained conditions for nonliquefied and liquefied stages. Based on the test results, the number of cyclic shear events (N-ev), built-up excess pore water pressure ratio (r(u)), CSR, and maximum double amplitude shear strain (gamma(DA)(max)) were shown to be the factors influencing the behavior of samples. For the samples that were not subjected to any prior liquefaction stage, the reliquefaction resistance continuously increased as N-ev increased. For those subjected to repeated liquefaction, the samples presented cyclic liquefaction accompanied by high flow shear strain in the first event. The reliquefaction resistance drastically decreased in the second cyclic shear loading event as a result of the critical anisotropy induced by the first cyclic shear loading event when the contraction tendency prevailed. The samples showed cyclic mobility behavior from the fourth event onward, corresponding to the predominance of the dilation tendency. The obtained gamma(DA)(max) and epsilon(V)(rc) increased as CSR and/or r(u) increased and decreased as N-ev increased. The relative density (Dr) was not a major factor affecting the reliquefaction resistance; however, it might have promoted a lower induced anisotropy level, lower induced gamma(DA)(max), lower epsilon(V)(rc), and the change in behavior of samples from cyclic liquefaction (contraction tendency) to cyclic mobility (dilation tendency). A higher contraction tendency in samples resulted in a higher gamma(DA)(max) and epsilon(V)(rc). The shear strain induced in the immediate-past cyclic shear loading event was found to be the main factor affecting epsilon(V)(rc). From the gamma(DA)(max)-epsilon(V)(rc) relationship, two separate zones were observed, namely (1) noninduced flow shear strain; and (2) induced flow shear strain, regardless of CSR and N-ev. Article Efficient degradation of emerging organic pollutant by cerium phosphate/g-C3N4/Vis/PMS system: Catalytic kinetics and toxicity evaluation The Cerium Phosphate (CP) doped g-C3N4(g-CN) composite was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal process. The crystal nature, absorbance, morphology, elemental analysis, functional groups analysis, charge and particle size of all the synthesized materials were examined by various characterization techniques like UV -Vis-DRS spectroscopy (UV-Vis),Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy analysis (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy techniques (TEM), zeta potential and particle size analyser. The characterized CP/g-CN composite was used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of malachite green (Mal G) dye under the visible light irradiation with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The composite material was found to successfully overcome the electron hole recombination process. The PMS activation process was used to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of the synthesized CP/g-CN composite. The synthesized CP/g-CN with PMS activation exhibits 94% of malachite green dye degradation in time duration of 90 min and also was found to retain 90% of degradation efficiency after four consecutive photocatalytic performances. The toxicity of the photocatalytic degraded water sample was examined by the animal and plant mortality studies. The zebra fish (Danio rerio) and Mung bean (Vigna radiata) were employed in the animal and plant survival investigations. The CP/g-CN photocatalyst treated dye solution is found to be fit for animal and plant survival and therefore it is a potential photocatalyst for water remediation application. The modification of PNC using copper (II) chloride (CuCl2) as transition metal ions was carried by three different modification methods that were coded as Cu-MNC (25, 36), Cu-MNC (60, 6), and Cu-MNC (80, 3), respectively. The modification of PNC was characterized by X-ray diffraction, showing the increased d-spacing after the modification. The reinforcement of 5 wt% of PNC and Cu-MNC at the alkaline reaction of UF resins that were coded as UF/PNC, UF/MNC (25, 36), UF/MNC (60, 6), and UF/MNC (80, 3). The X-ray diffraction study showed that the addition of PNC and Cu-MNC into the UF resins decreased the crystallinity of resins from 48.1% to 45% for UF/PNC and 25% for all UF/MNC. The curing behavior exhibited that the activation energy of UF resins decreased with addition of PNC and Cu-MNC. The loading of PNC and Cu-MNC into UF resins improved the adhesion and reduced the formaldehyde emission of UF resins in plywood. Statistical analysis suggested that UF/MNC (80, 3) produced plywood with greater adhesion strength and lower formaldehyde emission over other modified resins. Article Pill Detection Model for Medicine Inspection Based on Deep Learning This paper proposes a deep learning algorithm that can improve pill identification performance using limited training data. In general, when individual pills are detected in multiple pill images, the algorithm uses multiple pill images from the learning stage. However, when there is an increase in the number of pill types to be identified, the pill combinations in an image increase exponentially. To detect individual pills in an image that contains multiple pills, we first propose an effective database expansion method for a single pill. Then, the expanded training data are used to improve the detection performance. Our proposed method shows higher performance improvement than the existing algorithms despite the limited imaging and data set size. Our proposed method will help minimize problems, such as loss of productivity and human error, which occur while inspecting dispensed pills. Article QCM-Based HCl Gas Detection on Dimethylamine-Functionalized Crosslinked Copolymer Films In this work, sensing behaviors and mechanisms of two crosslinked copolymers with dimethylamine and dimethylamide functional groups were compared and investigated for their ability to detect hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas. The crosslinked copolymer films were photopolymerized on quartz crystal electrodes using a micro-contact printing technique. The gas sensing behaviors were analyzed by measuring resonant frequency (Delta f) of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). The HCl binding capacity of photopolymerized films, with a mass between 4.6 and 5.9 mu g, was optimized. Under optimized film mass conditions, the poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (DMAEMA-co-EGDMA), poly(DMAEMA-co-EGDMA), film, C2-DMA, showed a 13.9-fold higher binding capacity than the poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, poly(DMAA-co-EGDMA), film, C0-DMA, during HCl gas adsorption. HCl gas was effectively adsorbed on the C2-DMA film because of the formation of tertiary amine salts through protonation and strong ionic bonding. Furthermore, the C2-DMA film exhibited excellent sensitivity, of 2.51 (ng/mu g) (1/ppm), and selectivity coefficient (k* = 12.6 for formaldehyde and 13.5 for hydrogen fluoride) compared to the C0-DMA film. According to the experimental results, and due to its high functionality and stability, the C2-DMA film-coated QC electrode could be used as an HCl gas sensor, with low-cost and simple preparation, in future endeavors. Article Stress induced self-rollable smart-stent-based U-health platform for in-stent restenosis monitoring To date, several smart stents have been proposed to continuously detect biological cues, which is essential for tracking patients' critical vital signs and therapy. However, the proposed smart stent fabrication techniques rely on conventional laser micro-cutting or 3D printing technologies. The sensors are then integrated into the stent structure using an adhesive, conductive epoxy, or laser micro-welding process. The sensor packaging method using additional fabrication processes can cause electrical noise, and there is a possibility of sensor detachment from the sent structure after implantation, which may pose a significant risk to patients. Herein, we are demonstrating for the first time a single-step fabrication method to develop a smart stent with an integrated sensor for detecting in-stent restenosis and assessing the functional dynamics of the heart. The smart stent is fabricated using a microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based micromachining technology. The proposed smart stent can detect biological cues without additional power and wirelessly transmit the signal to the network analyzer. The cytocompatibility of the smart stent is confirmed through a cytotoxicity test by monitoring the cell growth, proliferation, and viability of the cultured cardiomyocytes. The capacitance of the smart stent exhibits an excellent linear relationship with the applied pressure. The exceptional sensitivity of the pressure sensor enabled the proposed smart stent to detect biological cues during in vivo analysis. The preliminary findings confirmed the proposed smart stent's higher level of structural integrity, durability and repeatability. Finally, the practical feasibility of the smart stent is demonstrated by monitoring diastole and systole at various beat rates using a phantom. The results of the phantom study showed a similar pattern to the human model, indicating the potential use of the proposed multifunctional smart stent for real-time applications. Article Synthesis, characterization, stability, and thermal properties of graphene oxide based hybrid nanofluids for thermal applications: Experimental approach In recent years, graphene oxide-based nanofluids have been reported to have superior heat transfer capability compared to other nanofluids. This work examines the synergistic effect of SiO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles with graphene oxide when dispersed in distilled water due to hybridization. Initially, we synthesized the SiO2, TiO2, and graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles using various methods. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) is used as a sur-factant. Then, water base mono and hybrid nanofluid (50:50) was prepared for the volume concentration range of 0.05-1 %. Mono and hybrid nanofluids'(HNF) stability, viscosity (VST), and thermal conductivity (TC) were studied at 30-60 degrees C. XRD, FESEM, DLS, and zeta potential tests were performed. The novel correlations were presented to estimate the TC and VST of the GO and HNFs based on obtained data. The highest VST enhancement was observed for the GO nanofluid compared to the HNFs. The maximum TC amplification of GO nanofluid is 14.4 and 9.8 % higher than the GO-SiO2 and GO-TiO2 HNFs at 60 degrees C at a 1.0 % volume concentration. HNFs would be an excellent option as high thermal and cost-effective nanofluids for thermal applications at temper-atures over 45 degrees C based on the performance enhancement ratio (PER) of the researched nanofluids (NF). Article Visible and Near Infrared Image Fusion Using Base Tone Compression and Detail Transform Fusion This study aims to develop a spatial dual-sensor module for acquiring visible and near-infrared images in the same space without time shifting and to synthesize the captured images. The proposed method synthesizes visible and near-infrared images using contourlet transform, principal component analysis, and iCAM06, while the blending method uses color information in a visible image and detailed information in an infrared image. The contourlet transform obtains detailed information and can decompose an image into directional images, making it better in obtaining detailed information than decomposition algorithms. The global tone information is enhanced by iCAM06, which is used for high-dynamic range imaging. The result of the blended images shows a clear appearance through both the compressed tone information of the visible image and the details of the infrared image. Article Analysis of microsatellite instability in Korean patients with pancreatic cancer BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a dangerous malignancy with a high mortality rate. Diagnosing PC at an early stage is difficult, and approximately 5% of the patients survive for 5 years. Microsatellite instability (MSI) plays an important role in colorectal cancer (CRC) for prognosis and immunotherapy. Evaluation of MSI status is important as it is recognized biomarker for the positive response of immune checkpoint blockade therapy in cancer. To our knowledge, there is no report yet on the prevalence of MSI in Korean PC patients. Studies have reported conflicting prevalence of MSI in PC. METHODS: Therefore, to improve the likelihood of MSI identification in PC, we included 133 patients with PC; paired tumor and normal tissue DNA were isolated and MSI was analyzed using Promega panel and immunohistochemistry (IHC) was also performed. RESULTS: Our results from the Promega panel indicated that one (0.7%) tumor was MSI-high (MSI-H), 13 (9.8%) were MSI-low (MSI-L), and 119 (89.5%) were microsatellite stable (MSS). IHC result also confirmed dMMR in only one sample. CONCLUSIONS: The finding of low incidence of MSI-H observed by the Promega panel also matched IHC results, so this study suggested that in Korean PC patients, MSI prevalence is infrequent. Article Understanding the Role of Environmental Transmission on COVID-19 Herd Immunity and Invasion Potential COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is mainly transmitted directly between humans. However, it is observed that this disease can also be transmitted through an indirect route via environmental fomites. The development of appropriate and effective vaccines has allowed us to target and anticipate herd immunity. Understanding of the transmission dynamics and the persistence of the virus on environmental fomites and their resistive role on indirect transmission of the virus is an important scientific and public health challenge because it is essential to consider all possible transmission routes and route specific transmission strength to accurately quantify the herd immunity threshold. In this paper, we present a mathematical model that considers both direct and indirect transmission modes. Our analysis focuses on establishing the disease invasion threshold, investigating its sensitivity to both transmission routes and isolate route-specific transmission rate. Using the tau-leap algorithm, we perform a stochastic model simulation to address the invasion potential of both transmission routes. Our analysis shows that direct transmission has a higher invasion potential than that of the indirect transmission. As a proof of this concept, we fitted our model with early epidemic data from several countries to uniquely estimate the reproduction numbers associated with direct and indirect transmission upon confirming the identifiability of the parameters. As the indirect transmission possess lower invasion potential than direct transmission, proper estimation and necessary steps toward mitigating it would help reduce vaccination requirement. Masud, M. Article Hospital case-volume and mortality after lung cancer surgery: A population-based retrospective cohort study Objectives: Recent advances in lung cancer treatment warrants reassessment of the volume-outcome association in lung cancer surgery. This study reassessed the relationship between surgical case-volume and both in-hospital and long-term mortality after lung cancer surgery using a current database to reflect recent advances. Materials and methods: Using the database of the National Health Insurance Service in Korea, data of all adult patients who underwent lung cancer surgery in Korea between 2005 and 2019 were obtained. Hospitals were categorized by the annual number of lung cancer surgeries. Risk-adjusted in-hospital and 1, 3, 5-year mortality after surgery were assessed. Results: A total of 84,194 lung cancer surgeries were performed in 163 centers during the study period. High volume centers were defined as > 200 cases/year, medium-volume centers as 60-200 cases/year, and low volume centers as < 60 cases/year. After adjustment, in-hospital mortality was significantly lower in high volume centers (1.03%) compared to medium-volume centers (2.06%, adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.43; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.23-1.65; P < 0.001), and low-volume centers (3.08%, OR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.16-1.51; P < 0.001). Long-term mortality was also significantly lower in high-volume centers compared to the other groups. Conclusion: High-volume centers showed lower in-hospital and long-term mortality compared to centers with less case-volume. Article In-situ modulus detector for subgrade characterization Resilient moduli are widely used in mechanistic analyses to predict distresses in pavement structures. The objective of this study is to develop an in-situ modulus detector (IMD) to evaluate the resilient moduli of subgrades based on various influencing factors. The IMD consists of a tip module, a driving rod, and a hammer-drop system. In the tip module, a load cell and an accelerometer are installed to measure the dynamic responses of force and acceleration. The resilient modulus is calculated from the deviator stress and the recoverable strain determined using the IMD. A weathered soil is prepared for the compacted specimens that are used in the dynamic penetration tests. These dynamic penetration tests are conducted with the IMD on four compacted specimens with different water contents under seven different hammer-drop heights. The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum amplitudes of the force and displacement depend on the drop height of the hammer and the water content of the compacted specimens. The resilient modulus profiles obtained from using the IMD can be influenced by the hammer energy, water content, and dry density of soils. The IMD may be a promising field-testing device to evaluate the in-situ resilient moduli of subgrades.
