| ○ | ○ | Article | Kinematic and Dynamic Structure of the 18 May 2020 Squall Line over South Korea | The diagonal squall line that passed through the Korean Peninsula on the 18 May 2020 was examined using wind data retrieved from multiple Doppler radar synthesis focusing on its kinematic and dynamic aspects. The low-level jet, along with warm and moist air in the lower level, served as the primary source of moisture supply during the initiation and formation process. The presence of a cold pool accompanying the squall line played a role in retaining moisture at the surface. As the squall line approached the Korean Peninsula, the convective bands in the northern segment (NS) and southern segment (SS) of the squall line exhibited distinct evolutionary patterns. The vertical wind shear in the NS area was more pronounced compared to that in the SS. The ascending inflow associated with the tilted updraft in the NS reached an altitude of 7 km, whereas it was only up to 4 km in the SS. | ○ | ○ | Article | Measurement of Downwelling Radiance Using a Low-Cost Compact Fourier-Transform Infrared System for Monitoring Atmospheric Conditions | Temperature and water vapor play crucial roles in the Earth's climate system, and it is important to understand and monitor the variation in the thermodynamic profile within the lower troposphere. Among various observation platforms for understanding the vertical structure of temperature and humidity, ground-based Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) can provide detailed information about the lower troposphere by complementing the limitations of radiosonde or satellite methods. However, these ground-based systems have limitations in terms of cost, operation, and mobility. Herein, we introduce a cost-effective and easily deployable FTIR observation system designed to enhance monitoring capabilities for atmospheric conditions. The atmospheric downwelling radiance spectrum of sky is measured by applying a real-time radiative calibration using a blackbody. From the observed radiance spectrum, the thermodynamic profile (temperature and the water vapor mixing ratio) of the lower troposphere was retrieved using an algorithm based on the optimal estimation method (OEM). The retrieved vertical structure results in the lower troposphere were similar to the fifth-generation reanalysis database (ERA-5) of the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the National Centers for Environmental Prediction final analysis (NCEP FNL). | ○ | ○ | Article | Study on Morphometrical Urban Aerodynamic Roughness Multi-Scale Exploration Using LiDAR Remote Sensing | This study proposes the use of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing (RS) to support morphometric research for estimating the aerodynamic roughness length (z(0)) of building placement on various scales. A LiDAR three-dimensional point cloud (3DPC) data processing graphical user interface (GUI) was developed to explore the z(0) and related urban canopy parameters (UCPs) in the Incheon metropolitan area in South Korea. The results show that multi-scale urban aerodynamic roughness exploration is viable and can address differences in urban building data at various spatial resolutions. Although validating morphological multi-scale UCPs using dense tall towers is challenging, emerging low-cost and efficient methods can serve as substitutes. | ○ | ○ | Article | Supervised Learning-Based Prediction of Lightning Probability in the Warm Season | The accurate prediction of lightning is crucial for forecasters to respond effectively to its related hazards. The rapid development and confined spatial extent of convective storms, in which lightning frequently occurs, pose considerable challenges for accurately predicting their locations using numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. Lightning occurrence is often prognosed using thermodynamic parameters, convective available potential energy (CAPE), the severe weather threat index (SWEAT), the lifted index (LI), etc. A high-resolution NWP model provides a prediction of these thermodynamic parameters at high spatiotemporal resolution with high accuracy for a few hours. However, a complicated algorithm is required to handle all the useful high-resolution variables from the NWP model. The recently emerging machine learning technique can solve this issue by properly handling these "big data" without any model distributional assumption. In this study, we developed a random forest algorithm for nowcasting and very short-range forecasting (useful for similar to 6 h), named LightningRF. LightningRF was trained by using lightning occurrence as a response variable and characteristic parameters from the NWP as predictors. It was also applied to analysis and forecast fields, showing a high probability of lightning within the observed lightning regions. | ○ | ○ | Article | Underutilized Feature Extraction Methods for Burn Severity Mapping: A Comprehensive Evaluation | Wildfires increasingly threaten ecosystems and infrastructure, making accurate burn severity mapping (BSM) essential for effective disaster response and environmental management. Machine learning (ML) models utilizing satellite-derived vegetation indices are crucial for assessing wildfire damage; however, incorporating many indices can lead to multicollinearity, reducing classification accuracy. While principal component analysis (PCA) is commonly used to address this issue, its effectiveness relative to other feature extraction (FE) methods in BSM remains underexplored. This study aims to enhance ML classifier accuracy in BSM by evaluating various FE techniques that mitigate multicollinearity among vegetation indices. Using composite burn index (CBI) data from the 2014 Carlton Complex fire in the United States as a case study, we extracted 118 vegetation indices from seven Landsat-8 spectral bands. We applied and compared 13 different FE techniques-including linear and nonlinear methods such as PCA, t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), Isomap, uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP), factor analysis (FA), independent component analysis (ICA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD), non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), locally linear embedding (LLE), spectral embedding (SE), and neighborhood components analysis (NCA). The performance of these techniques was benchmarked against six ML classifiers to determine their effectiveness in improving BSM accuracy. Our results show that alternative FE techniques can outperform PCA, improving classification accuracy and computational efficiency. Techniques like LDA and NCA effectively capture nonlinear relationships critical for accurate BSM. | ○ | ○ | Article | 16S rRNA metabarcoding for the identification of tick-borne bacteria in ticks in the Republic of Korea | Ticks are blood-sucking ectoparasites that act as vectors for transmission of various pathogens. The purpose of this study was to assess tick-borne bacteria, whether pathogenic or not, in ticks distributed in Korea using 16S rRNA metabarcoding and to confirm the results by PCR. Questing ticks were collected from four provinces in Korea in 2021 using the flagging method. After pooling the DNAs from the 61 tick pools (including 372 ticks), the bacterial 16S rRNA V3-V4 hypervariable region was amplified and sequenced using the MiSeq platform. Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and the endosymbiont Wolbachia were confirmed by conventional PCR and molecular analysis. In total, 6907 ticks (534 pools) were collected and identified as belonging to five species (Haemaphysalis spp., H. longicornis, H. flava, I. nipponensis, and A. testudinarium). Through 16S rRNA metabarcoding, 240 amplicon sequence variants were identified. The dominant taxa were Rickettsiella and Coxiella. Additionally, pathogenic bacteria such as Rickettsia and Ehrlichia, endosymbiotic bacteria such as Wolbachia and Spiroplasma were identified. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to confirm the presence of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, Bartonella, and Wolbachia in individual ticks. Overall, 352 (65.92%) of 534 pools tested positive for at least one of the screened tick-borne bacteria. Rickettsia was the most prevalent (61.42%), followed by Wolbachia (5.05%). Ehrlichia was detected in 4.86% of tested samples, whereas Bartonella was not detected. In this study, 16S rRNA metabarcoding revealed the presence of Rickettsia, Wolbachia, and Ehrlichia, in that order of abundance, while showing absence of Bartonella. These results were confirmed to exhibit the same trend as that of the conventional PCR. | ○ | ○ | Article | A comprehensive multi-task deep learning approach for predicting metabolic syndrome with genetic, nutritional, and clinical data | Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disorder characterized by a cluster of metabolic abnormalities, including abdominal obesity, hypertension, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and impaired glucose tolerance. It poses a significant public health concern, as individuals with MetS are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Early and accurate identification of individuals at risk for MetS is essential. Various machine learning approaches have been employed to predict MetS, such as logistic regression, support vector machines, and several boosting techniques. However, these methods use MetS as a binary status and do not consider that MetS comprises five components. Therefore, a method that focuses on these characteristics of MetS is needed. In this study, we propose a multi-task deep learning model designed to predict MetS and its five components simultaneously. The benefit of multi-task learning is that it can manage multiple tasks with a single model, and learning related tasks may enhance the model's predictive performance. To assess the efficacy of our proposed method, we compared its performance with that of several single-task approaches, including logistic regression, support vector machine, CatBoost, LightGBM, XGBoost and one-dimensional convolutional neural network. For the construction of our multi-task deep learning model, we utilized data from the Korean Association Resource (KARE) project, which includes 352,228 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 7729 individuals. We also considered lifestyle, dietary, and socio-economic factors that affect chronic diseases, in addition to genomic data. | ○ | ○ | Article | A novel indicator in epidemic monitoring through a case study of Ebola in West Africa (2014-2016) | The E/S (exposed/susceptible) ratio is analyzed in the SEIR model. The ratio plays a key role in understanding epidemic dynamics during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and Guinea. The maximum value of the ratio occurs immediately before or after the time-dependent reproduction number (R-t) equals 1, depending on the initial susceptible population (S(0)). It is demonstrated that transmission rate curves corresponding to various incubation periods intersect at a single point referred to as the Cross Point (CP). At this point, the E/S ratio reaches an extremum, signifying a critical shift in transmission dynamics and aligning with the time when R t approaches 1. By plotting transmission rate curves, beta(t), for any two arbitrary incubation periods and tracking their intersections, we can trace CP over time. CP serves as an indicator of epidemic status, especially when R t is close to 1. It provides a practical means of monitoring epidemics without prior knowledge of the incubation period. | ○ | ○ | Article | Accumulation and translocation of lead in vegetables through intensive use of organic manure and mineral fertilizers with wastewater | In many countries with wastewater irrigation and intensive use of fertilizers (minerals and organics), heavy metal deposition by crops is regarded as a major environmental concern. A study was conducted to determine the impact of mineral fertilizers, cow manure, poultry manure, leaf litter, and sugarcane bagasse on soil's trace Pb content and edible parts of vegetables. It also evaluated the risk of lead (Pb) contamination in water, soil, and food crops. Six vegetables (Daucus carota, Brassica oleracea, Pisum sativum, Solanum tuberosum, Raphanus sativus, and Spinacia oleracea) were grown in the field under twelve treatments with different nutrient and water inputs. The lead concentrations in soil, vegetables for all treatments and water samples ranged from 1.038-10.478, 0.09346-9.0639 mg/kg and 0.036-0.26448 mg/L, The concentration of lead in soil treated with wastewater in treatment (T6) and vegetable samples was significantly higher, exceeding the WHO's permitted limit. Mineral and organic fertilizers combined with wastewater treatment reduced lead (Pb) concentrations in vegetables compared to wastewater application without organic fertilizers. Health risk indexes for all treatments except wastewater treatment (T6) were less than one. | ○ | ○ | Article | Assessment of malignant potential for HPV types 16, 52, and 58 in the uterine cervix within a Korean cohort | High-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is the primary carcinogen in uterine cervical carcinoma. While genotype-specific carcinogenic risks have been extensively studied in Western populations, data from Korean are sparse. This study evaluates the malignant potential of the three most prevalent HR-HPVs in Korea: HPV16, HPV52, and HPV58. We analyzed 230 patients who underwent cervical conization and had been tested for HPV within a year prior to the procedure, excluding those with multiple infections. This analysis was confined to patients with single HPV infections and assessed outcomes of CIN3+, which includes carcinoma in situ (CIN3) and invasive carcinoma. The incidence of invasive cervical cancer was 6.7% for HPV16, 1.7% for HPV52, and 2.0% for HPV58; however, these differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.187). The rate of CIN3+ for HPV16, HPV52, and HPV58 were 70.6%, 51.7%, and 58.8%, respectively. Despite the small sample size, which may limit the robustness of statistical analysis, the data suggest a higher observed risk with HPV16. These findings highlight the need for vigilant clinical management tailored to specific HPV genotypes and support the implementation of a nine-valent vaccine in Korea. | ○ | ○ | Article | Association between body mass index and three-year outcome of acute myocardial infarction | Body mass index (BMI), as an important risk factor related to metabolic disease. However, in some studies higher BMI was emphasized as a beneficial factor in the clinical course of patients after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a concept known as the "BMI paradox." The purpose of this study was to investigate how clinical outcomes of patients treated for AMI differed according to BMI levels. A total of 10,566 patients in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institutes of Health (KAMIR-NIH) from May 2010 to June 2015 were divided into three BMI groups (group 1: BMI = 22 and = 26 kg/m(2)). The primary outcome was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event (MACCE) at 3 years of follow-up. At 1 year of follow-up, the incidence of MACCE in group 1 was 10.1% of that in group 3, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 2.27, and 6.5% in group 2, with an HR of 1.415. This tendency continued up to 3 years of follow-up. The study demonstrated that lower incidence of MACCE in the high BMI group of Asians during the 3-year follow-up period compared to the low BMI group. | ○ | Article | At-admission prediction of mortality and pulmonary embolism in an international cohort of hospitalised patients with COVID-19 using statistical and machine learning methods | By September 2022, more than 600 million cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection have been reported globally, resulting in over 6.5 million deaths. COVID-19 mortality risk estimators are often, however, developed with small unrepresentative samples and with methodological limitations. It is highly important to develop predictive tools for pulmonary embolism (PE) in COVID-19 patients as one of the most severe preventable complications of COVID-19. Early recognition can help provide life-saving targeted anti-coagulation therapy right at admission. Using a dataset of more than 800,000 COVID-19 patients from an international cohort, we propose a cost-sensitive gradient-boosted machine learning model that predicts occurrence of PE and death at admission. Logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards models, and Shapley values were used to identify key predictors for PE and death. Our prediction model had a test AUROC of 75.9% and 74.2%, and sensitivities of 67.5% and 72.7% for PE and all-cause mortality respectively on a highly diverse and held-out test set. The PE prediction model was also evaluated on patients in UK and Spain separately with test results of 74.5% AUROC, 63.5% sensitivity and 78.9% AUROC, 95.7% sensitivity. Age, sex, region of admission, comorbidities (chronic cardiac and pulmonary disease, dementia, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, obesity, smoking), and symptoms (any, confusion, chest pain, fatigue, headache, fever, muscle or joint pain, shortness of breath) were the most important clinical predictors at admission. Age, overall presence of symptoms, shortness of breath, and hypertension were found to be key predictors for PE using our extreme gradient boosted model. This analysis based on the, until now, largest global dataset for this set of problems can inform hospital prioritisation policy and guide long term clinical research and decision-making for COVID-19 patients globally. | ○ | ○ | Article | Augmented prediction of vertebral collapse after osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures through parameter-efficient fine-tuning of biomedical foundation models | Vertebral collapse (VC) following osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) often requires aggressive treatment, necessitating an accurate prediction for early intervention. This study aimed to develop a predictive model leveraging deep neural networks to predict VC progression after OVCF using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and clinical data. Among 245 enrolled patients with acute OVCF, data from 200 patients were used for the development dataset, and data from 45 patients were used for the test dataset. To construct an accurate prediction model, we explored two backbone architectures: convolutional neural networks and vision transformers (ViTs), along with various pre-trained weights and fine-tuning methods. Through extensive experiments, we built our model by performing parameter-efficient fine-tuning of a ViT model pre-trained on a large-scale biomedical dataset. Attention rollouts indicated that the contours and internal features of the compressed vertebral body were critical in predicting VC with this model. To further improve the prediction performance of our model, we applied the augmented prediction strategy, which uses multiple MRI frames and achieves a significantly higher area under the curve (AUC). | ○ | ○ | Article | Benefits of statin therapy within a year after kidney transplantation | Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality after kidney transplantation (KT). Although statins reduce cardiovascular risk and have renal benefits in the general population, their effects on KT recipients are not well-established. We studied the effects of early statin use (within 1-year post-transplantation) on long-term outcomes in 714 KT recipients from the Korean cohort study for outcome in patients with KT. Compared with the control group, statin group recipients were significantly older, had a higher body mass index, and had a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus. During a median follow-up of 85 months, 74 graft losses occurred (54 death-censored graft losses and 20 deaths). Early statin use was independently associated with lower mortality (hazard ratio, 0.280; 95% confidence interval 0.111-0.703) and lower death-censored graft loss (hazard ratio, 0.350; 95% confidence interval 0.198-0.616). Statin therapy significantly reduced low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels but did not decrease the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. Biopsy-proven rejection and graft renal function were not significantly different between statin and control groups.
